Thanks for the great tips for those of us who have had joint replacements. Youre an inspiration for my recovery and training! Thanks!

One of the main reasons I had the knee replacements was to continue hiking and doing the things I love. I’m fortunate they went so well for me. No more knee pain or swelling. Best of luck to you on your journey.

Stairs are good for flatlanders. Up and down as many times as you can. Find a hospital, tall hotel, or university building and find the stairs.

Good advice! I always try to take the stairs instead of the elevator if I have time.

Good to see you in good health Ape Man. I missed your JMT report this year, any chance we can get your analysis?

I will get a snow report out soon. Sierra snow totals are slightly above 100% so it looks like a good year for the jmt and the passes to clear by late juneish?

Wow are you looking good !! How did you lose the weight ? I must have missed something. So glad to see you so fit. Have a great time the weather looks amazing. Greetings from Germany

Thanks Annie! I semi retired 3 years ago and started waking 10-15 thousand steps everyday and that’s pretty much it. I lost 50 pounds and 6 inches off my waist just doing that. I eat bad food and drink too much beer but burn enough calories to keep the weight off. I’m just lucky I have good genes and am able to keep the weight off. Sure keeps my knees happy!

Approaching 70 and I section hike Appalachian Trail every spring as a test to see how I am aging. Just came back and had Good News & Bad News. Good News: Solved knee problems switching to zero drop shoes (shoes without raised heels, Altra Lone Peak 6) which changes my steps to coming down on my forefoot which causes knee to be bent and leg muscles absorb shock instead of knees, Knees did great, solved, took about 6-7 months for feet to adapt to zero drop shoes. Bad News: This time I am getting weaker, started out doing 12-11 miles a day for first 70 miles, then got weaker, got run down everyday after 9 miles, would have had to step down to 7 miles next if I didn't bail, something wrong. Don't know if 70 is a limit or if there is something I can do to increase strength & endurance. Since I got back home I have been doing 100 squats while wearing 40lb vest.

As we age it takes longer for us to build muscle and endurance. Maybe your body hasn’t adjusted to the new shoes and stride? You are still in great shape so just keep moving and see where the trail leads you! I hope things get better for you as another hiking season approaches.
