Both Getaway games and Mafia 1 (all from around the same time) really do deserve a direct remake, improving only its technical parts like the graphics, clunky animations and controls, realistic physics with wheel support,...but I'd rather they don't as in the spirit of todays time I am 100% sure they would ruin it in the process with all the modern NFS driving physics, regenarative health, see through wall x-ray vision, they'd make the roads as wide as a runway, add a minimap with flashing waypoints floating in the air... ಠ_ಠ Can you imagine a photorealistic 1:1 representation of central London, with realistic licened cars to drive around, with the on foot shooting sections with the spit and polish of something like a GTA V game? Amazing!

@@justinespirit2 Hello, man of the future! You bear great news! I am man of the present. While the Mafia Definitive Edition did almost align with my prediction 100% (no realistic physics, no wheel support, the roads were made as wide as a runway and they did add a minimap with floating waypoints) (I hate being right all the time ಠ_ಠ), it's still great to see this great game got a remake at all. Now, to any man of the future... Is there a Getaway remake??

I played this during Gamestop's return a game for another game era, and so I only owned it about a week, but what I remember is the actual shooter parts we're a good deal better than GTA(and the guns felt like they had actual power to them.) While....pretty much else was far below the quality standard set by even the first 3D GTA.

You did not mention that the game actually had major problems with your local censors, mostly due to that exact scene at 12:11, which your censors deemed so objectionable that it got the game banned in your country. But luckily, SCEE did cut out this scene for your local version, in which it got away with an MA15+ rating. And yes, this was way before the R18+ rating was introduced for games. You can read more info about it on www.refused-classification.com

Fun facts: They recreated about 10 sq/m of London for The Getaway, using about 50,000 reference photos taken by the team. All of the characters in the game were recreated using scans of real actors who also gave voice and motion capture performances for the cut-scenes. They made various live-action trailers and promotional videos with the actors also. The game was also censored about 6 months after release - one torture scene (shown in the video) was 'too graphic', and BT (British Telecom) were angry over use of their logo on a van you drive in one mission (the same mission where you shoot up the police station). A censored version was released later with the van logo removed, and camera angles changed during the torture scene. This game was produced by Brendan McNamara of L.A. Noire fame, and the same composer (Andrew Hale). L.A. Noire features a cameo from Don Kembry, the actor who played Mark Hammond, with a nod to that character.

I mean it's worth mentioning that not only do you drive the cars, you're instructed to kill a BT employee to obtain the second one. British Telecom feared that this might influence someone to murder one of they're employees which is kind of understandable considering this was the during the height of the "video games condone violence"-era.

Oh man, I played the shit out of this game in the summer of 2002/03, mostly because I had too few games at the time. It was pretty good despite the janky controls and the open world was fairly boring outside of the missions. Not much replayability though. Free Roaming gives you a bit of a breather without pesky cops and Yardies chasing after you (providing you don't antagonise them). You can search for hidden vehicles (like the tank with a working turret) but that's pretty much it. It's definitely a product of its time, as you rightly point out. A couple interesting facts: I recall reading in the Official PlayStation Magazine (AUS) that the writers had either consulted or had some of the writers from British police drama The Bill. Apparently some of the actors in the game had appeared in the show too. And in the Free Roaming mode you start off parked outside Team SoHo's real life studio.

great review, man. just one thing I've noticed about this game, as a Londoner myself, is that the city is wholly realistic, with roads and locations almost 1:1 with real London. my brother once navigated us through central London on pure in-game memory alone. also the businesses on the streets are also all real, adding to the immersion in the story. as a Londoner I definitely thought this story could take place in my city, more so than GTA 3 represented New York, or Vice City represented Miami.

Really enjoyed playing this back in the day. Difficult level was just right, a good mix of missions. On the downside the comedy accents really put me off. The real star of the game isn't the unlikeable main character (who slaughters hundreds of people to save the life of his son - morally reprehensible whichever way you look at it). The real star of this game is the city of London. If you're a London resident if was brilliant driving around the same streets you encounter in real life. I even went to one of the pubs featured in one of the cutscenes in the game. And there it was behind the bar; the same clock they had in the game.

I had an unforgettable Christmas morning with this game. My Dad and uncles crowded round the TV getting me to drive to places they used to work or visit. This was my first PS2 game. It was all I had for the system for the first month or so, so I played it a lot. I'm a bit dissapointed that you didn't mention the biggest flaw with the driving/navigation in this game. The thing that literally made it a chore getting from A to B. Because the blinkers would tell you when to turn, if you managed to bust your tail light you were screwed. Having to steal a new car, even though your current one is fine, just because of a busted blinker... The villains accent almost makes up for it though.

The Getaway is the only game that did the auto-heal right. When you got hurt (blood on your clothes), you just had to lean on a wall/car/anything and wait. The character will breath heavily and slowly heal. Definitely better than what we get today, the screen getting red and huge on screen text telling you to cover. Also The Getaway 1 was meant to be a PSX game, that's why the game looks empty (streets, interiors). It's the Getaway 2 that was developed specificaly for the PS2, when the game looks the best.

This was honestly a pretty bad game. I was caught up in the hype and bought it as soon as it came out, and I did play it quite a bit, but everything was so.. strange. The open world aspect of the game and the minute attention to detail was completely wasted, there was absolutely nothing to do except getting from point A to point B, and I think the game would have been better without the vehicle portion of the game. The mechanics, as mentioned, were horribly awkward, and the health system made the shooting sections pretty much a waiting game and it just didn't work. The atmosphere was bland and lifeless and the story felt like a lackluster attempt at imitating the longstock/snatch craze from a few years earlier. But, it did have one saving feature, one of the best missions I've experienced in a video game, the infiltration/shootout at the police station. That was the most adrenaline I've had playing a game I think, and for a short while it felt like everything fell into place and the game was freaking awesome!

When it was announced, GTA was still a top-down 2D game. The Getaway was supposed to release with the PS2 at launch but was delayed for over 2 years. That's part of the reason why the hype was so huge, because Sony announced it and then kept showing it as it continued to be delayed. Team Soho is the same team that did Porsche Challenge on the PSX, which was also a fantastic game graphically for its time.

Good review. I was never really playing games most of the the ps2 era since I was so young, but I love to play them now. I just recently got this and I can't wait to get the sequel once I finish it.

I played this game at my cousin's house a long time ago. I was frustrated at how easy it was to die and how clunk the on foot and driving movement is. I mean your character runs super slowly like he has to take a crap and the cars have little control and have this nasty screech when you try accelerating them. I think I'll pick this game up again someday but I gotta admit it's a bit frustrating.

I actually favor "The Getaway Black Monday" the 2nd part. The game looks old well.....because it aged gracefully. This during the time before high frame rates, next level graphics & a bangin' music sountrack. This was as closes to visiting Britain as it got next to the double 0 7 games. The Getaways will always have a place in my heart. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

The phrase 'GTA clone' did more to damage games reputations then any actual bad gameplay. As soon as a game got the moniker (often before it debuted to the public) it was written off. That doesn't mean to say it couldn't sell well or be enjoyable but rather if it didn't do what gta III or VC exactly or better, it was going to be reviewed negatively. In this case, The Getaway played more like a mature, interactive movie with a developing plot and increasing stakes until its conclusion. It wasn't concerned with R/C helicopters or dance mini games or pretending to be a paramedic or pizza delivery driver. It was supposed to be a dark and gritty tale of a violent but hopeless man trying to just rescue his son against impossible odds and having to do heinous tasks to do so. Or that of a burny out cop who is separated from the criminal only by his black and white morality and badge. The ending rant of Charlie Jolson is something all in itself. I would doubt you'd not see language like that in a current game without at least a trigger warning. This game was mature beyond the era it was made in. Focused, story driven, gimmick free and trying to do many new things. Hud-less play, real brands, a new non-American or fictional setting. It really should be applauded in its own right. It's sequel suffered a similar fate, being written off in comparison to GTA SA but again not really trying to be the same thing other than having an open world. After all, golf isn't football just because both sports use a ball. It really irks me to this day that the third installment lead to nothing as it really deserved a place in the market. If you lived through this game coming out and arguably more so if you are British, this game hit hard with even simple details standing out.

This Game Was Great And Black Monday Was Even Better, Spent Hours And Hours Playing it, The Concept of having A GTA Type of Game With Real World Cars Was A Really Big Deal Back Then And The Story Was More Realistic Than Most Other Games of It's Era, Secret Cars Were A Treat As Well, it's A Shame That The 3rd Installment Never Made it And Was Never Released!

8:40 Check out the Vietnam shooter: Vietcong. An early game with a pretty good cover system. With TONS of other unique and way ahead of it's time mechanics. It's actually a pretty solid game that still holds up. It's freeware at this point so you can find it fairly easily on PC. Xbox version isn't terrible either with a couple extra levels.

This Game is Perfect for a Remake for the PS5! In terms of story, I would like it to have an Expanded Story and In Terms of Gameplay, The Remake must take full advantage of the PS5's Graphical Power for a level of realism that was not possible on the PS2 and should make full use of the Features of the DualSense Controller! Not Only That, I would love to see Many of the Gameplay issues that plagued the original, fixed for the remake!

The Getaway games were awesome. Beaten both of them back in the day. Enjoyed them a lot.Stylistically they’re very similar to old Guy Ritchie movies. It’s shame the series faded away. The cancelled 3rd game of tge series was one of the reasons I bought ps3, but, unfortunately for me the game never came out.

OMG I forgot about this game!! It's like GTA in the UK! I will say that Originally this game played like Driver 2, where it feels like slow motion due to the frame rate. The Free Roam mode was actually good imo also

Cant be compared to grand theft auto UNTIL YOU BEAT THE GAME and get the free roam mode. Til then, the game is very linear. Also the weapon mechanics were vastly different to its time. Shooting guys through the windshields and seeing the blood splatter, shooting out tires, the cars looked genuinely wrecked. For the time it was a great game however i dont think it stands up today AT ALL.

I love these stupid reviews by "critics" aka people who get paid to write a certain type of review that favors their contracts. They are always like "This game is way too slow, it's like GTA. Whaaa Whaaa Whaaa" This is why I NEVER pay much attention to metacritics, or reviews of games. I like to experience the game for myself. I may, however, look at GAMEPLAY before buying a game

Back when I got the PS2 when it came out my mom absolutely would not buy me anything related to GTA. But this? Yeah that's fine... lmao Still one of my favorites from that era though, even though it's a shoddy ass game. Ironically enough this game is way more "mature" than GTA 3 in my opinion. Even when I was a kid I knew this.

I agree with you about everything you mention in this game... Story was ok, graphics was a way ahead of it's time, but movement controls, driving, no map, navigation style, car physics and mechanics (driving, damaging) it ruins joy of this game... However it is interesting to play in 2019, and when it was released it was great release... However gameplay of GTA III and GTA Vice City was better than this game... Cheers mate.

Ughhhhhhh I hated the driving on that game so damn much. Just that crappy little indicator always blinking at you, cars giving up on you and slowing to a crawl after a single bad bump, then getting out, and having to hobble away trying to find a wall while cops were shooting at you... Made simply getting from A to B feel like a nigh-impossible chore - 14 year old me gave up on it pretty shaprish.

22 minutes of the wife to get to know them or care, but, why should I care about the people at the bare? That is brief mission to just the objective? I get what mark is doing for his kid. Yes it's true we dont invest in the relationship but its quite easy to know he cares and is in grief, frustrated and wants his kid back. Mark feels no one cares about him and everyone wants him dead, all that matter is his kid. I like the getaway as its ahead of it's time, its environment and locations, I really think they wanted more into the game. It's like google maps where you can walk around on. It would be cool to go in shops, houses, pick up stuff, do stuff, any items that are around find useful how everything operates, time, tv 24 hour or week showing of situations, underground, personality, conditions, people moving houses. It had that domestic view of detail that it resembled society. The ending was pretty heated that Getaway wasnt scard of showing or depicting that gritty side. (If it was too gritting or just ugly face graphics thats up too anyone what people see becouse it had age here and there however dose lift for its time) I remember 2002 at near Christmas was playing this demo and just the detail and shade and reflections and atmosphere, it was incredible I have to say. Story I think was good, maybe you wanted something more to that I get that, it's a game I think underrated for it's time, it's own special kind different from GTA series.

One of my childhood games for a game that came out in the 2000's it looks good visually and realistic unlike games we get these days you can tell the developers put a lot of hard work and dedication into this series it's a shame we haven't had a 3rd game yet but maybe one day we will i mean maybe.

I knew one of the devs on this at the time. He was a bit of a dick to be honest, he said he knew the game was a bit broken but it got him a new car so who cares? Still, the team mostly made it with the best of intentions and lot of them are still going back to this type of story - London Heist / Blood and Truth on PSVR are basically another take on this same set up.
