Paul Clynes Could they not just create their own cars like in grand theft auto? I know that would take some charm away from the original but I feel like if they put effort into making it a huge cinematic crime experience it would sell incredibly well

But then again the formula of this game is too outdated for today standards. (you cannot, roam the whole London or do side missions like GTA. after completing a mission you are already on the way to for another mission) this game is too linear for a open world game, it ain't gonna work on today's generation. if they remake this then they have to change the whole open world system. which will require to change the narrative as well. (since the story is itself is written for this linear system)

V - Trigger idk Jedi Fallen order and God of War (2018) both had level design that felt kinda like this and mafia 2 to me, I felt like it could be a powerful showcase of the ps5. But companies do have that mindset to when in doubt make their game open world so it probably would have creative differences and fall down

I love the accuracy of the licensed cars in this, not in terms of 3D models but what would be actual regular cars in the UK in 2002: Rover 75s, Renault 5s, Saabs, Alfa 156s and Vauxhall Vectras, the latter two being family cars I grew up in, it's actually pretty cool in my opinion

Oh and the team weren't happy with the final out come. Brendan was more interested in making films than games. We tried to fix some of these issues for the sequel. Funny fact, we got an "A" bug from FPQA that said "There is not gameplay in this game" it made us laugh and cry at the same time😂

This was the game that I bought with my PS2 when it was new. The photo realism, the mocap, the cutscene work. The sense of scale... It all really blew my mind. I still think how that game made me feel has largely been unparalleled until very recently playing RDR2 on PC.

Honestly I've yet to encounter a game that got that gritty and realistic click. Of course now everything is flashy and graphically way more advanced, but at the time it really was up there and critically underrated in my view. Like you say, that feeling while playing it, a cinematic London experience, I never had it surpassed, certainly not by RDR2. At one point they released an Amsterdam trailer for Getaway 3, suuuper realistic, the street sign, boat, houses etc. very believable (I live there), but alas, it was never to be. @@Rombbb I never knew about this project. I've only ever played the original PS2 release and not for at least 10 years. Personally I couldn't see an Amsterdam happening, but there is no shortage of grime and crime to centre a plot around. Falling in canals and getting mayonnaise as health packs sounds about right too
@Rombbb
@Rombbb 4 жыл бұрын
@@mrmerlin6287 True, won't be happening, was in 2006. I was thinking about the original a bit more and besides the lighting, mature story etc. what I think was a big part of the realistic impression were all the licensed well-modeled cars, like regular british cars, from a Vauxhall, Rover to a Range Rover. And little details like working blinkers. Imagine if GTA would have real licensed cars, would be 100% more immersive.
@mrmerlin6287
@mrmerlin6287 4 жыл бұрын
@@Rombbb A large part of what made GTA stand apart from games like The Getaway was that it was only loosely grounded in reality. I think what made GTA outlandish and unbelievable was what made it soar into popularity. It was still a game at heart. It wouldn't translate into gritty, life-paced realism and carry as much drama if it had The Getaway treatment. Listening too all those voice actors in The Getaway was like a strange episode of East Enders.

"The Getaway" probably suffered most by being released almost simultaneously with "GTA Vice City". Both were (and are) extraordinary pieces of work which played key roles in propelling the PS2 to becoming the largest selling console of all time (a record that it still holds today). 18 years ago videogamers (and everyone else) were far more likely to read instruction books, and so the immediacy of the first scene of "Getaway" seemed to be visionary and filmlike, not confusing or mannered. Movies do not have HUDs and so it seems logical (and brave) that the GTA model should not be copied here. "Getaway" had a very troubled gestation and certainly felt awkward in some aspects, but this was counterbalanced by a very strong story with undercurrents of racism, torture, corruption and morality, in stark contrast to the almost cartoonish culture of "Vice City". The "Sim" character of the vehicle driving in "Getaway" took time to master, but again it added to the realism of the story. The 2004 sequel "Black Monday" seemed weak, probably because the design team failed to take the concept any further in real terms and thus did not surprise the audience as they had with the original. "The Getaway" is today often regarded as a forgotten game but that does not diminish the impact it had in 2002. It made a lot of people think about what a contemporary videogame could aspire to be, and in doing so it embodied a number of false starts. But it is a game still worth playing in 2020, and the visionary attitude of its creators is certainly laudable.

All I remember from The Getaway 2 was the amazing lighting effects in the very first part, almost on a par with the contemporary Doom 3 (though the PS2 could probably only handle such effects in a small, specific area). Also Black Monday put the "cop" chapter first (where other cops don't chase you), giving it a more sensible difficulty curve.

100% agree, even on my first play through the game felt jarring because I was expecting it to control like a GTA game, when it really sets out to do it's own thing. Black Monday was mostly more of the same but I do have memories of some interesting set pieces, I remember doing the council flat mission and thinking what other game would ever take place in a location like this and have it feel so real?

Not gonna lie, as an American who played this as a kid and loved it, one of the only reasons I wanted to see London when I was in the UK was to relive the memories of this game because I knew how accurately they recreated the city. And it was amazing. All of the places I visited in the game were there, and being there in real life felt like old memories. Like I've been there before. It was so surreal to have nostalgia toward a place I had only experienced in a video game world. When I got back home to the US, I popped in The Getaway to visit the places I had been during my trip, and it was just as awesome to experience. I'll never forget it.

Even the cereal boxes were real cereals we have in the UK if I remember correctly. there is no way car makers would allow that , and I actually like the fictional cars in gta , it allows a bigger budget to be spent on something else , and all the cars can have modifications ( if ferrari was in the game , modifications would be close to 0 ) sure it's sad you can't drive around in your dream car , but blame the car makers for that

@@hobowizard3124 I liked the cars in GTA up to V, other than the way they look all cars in a group like supercars or 4-door saloons are almost exactly the same to drive yet they expect you to get immersed and imagine it's the real thing or else they wouldn't rip them off as closely as they do. Think GTA 5's driving physics + terrible car engines are mostly to blame for it really.

@@paulclynes9865 I guess it's the result of having 250+ vehicles , but sure , they can make the handling better , the lotus eclipse inspired car for example could be slower but have better grip , while the fastest muscle car in the game ( whatever it is ) could be very drifty , making it perfect for drag racing and drifting , or make fwd based cars turn harder ( I don't think they would go for understeer since it's not a driving game )

This was a heavy hitter during the GTA clone days. I loved this game along with Scarface some yrs later. But to be honest, it was frustrating. Like everything you had a complaint about was game breaking. That damn car damage was awful. Couldn't imagine playing that nonsense today

I remember I couldn't even go back to GTA after playing this game. GTA felt so childish in comparison. This game was dark and realistic, real cars, real places in London. The voice acting was great, and the graphics and character models were top notch at the time. I remember being blown away by the faces. It was the L.A Noire of the PS2 era.

I loved The Getaway when it came out!!! I took the difficulty as a challenge of playing like real life like taking covering to not dying and driving through the game world not as a madman racer but treating it respectfully to how the damage was.....dont crash so much and no problem. Yeah there was times where I wanted to scream after trying to get away from the cops and they kept wrecking whatever car I was driving but then I realized don't draw attention to yourself by blowing through red lights and driving like Need for speed, once I figured that out the game became super easy for me by having patience and pulling off what was asked of me. Sitting with a six pack and dub sack ready to be packed in my bowl I embraced the realism they were trying to create and had one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. Love the first Getaway mildly amused by the sequel because they ditched the realism and because the characters heads were huge in comparison to the bodies where I kept expecting it to turn into NBA jam London lol. They need to remake the orginal Getaway with current gen graphics and gameplay I would gladly pay full price for that.

Imagine being one of the actors on this game in 2002, walking into a computer lab and putting on a dotted jumpsuit to "act." I can only imagine how weird it must've felt, but once seeing the renders i bet they changed their minds real quick. even for rendered graphics, this game stands out in realism (with the cutscenes and acting i mean) I remember being a kid and having the game glitch up slightly and wondering how they did all those intricate animations. (At first i thought it was a frame by frame drawing, just like movies. Oh how different the worlds of media have become.)

This was 2002 and not every game then was as handholding as nowadays. Like modern games give you a "push stick forward to move forward" followed by some idiot trophy called "first steps". But i agree this one without any hud did give me some pain at the start. But ffs i was like 11 when i got this and i figured it out quickly. After a few playthroughs you knew the scripted parts and could speedrun it a bit. I still love this game but havent played it for over 10 years. The lines and scenes are good and since its 2002 its no pc bs. As for the characthers they had a few good. Jolson, his nephew Jake was a fun psycho and Eyebrows. We dont get much from the other gangs other than Bethnal Green though. Also something not talked about in the review is the soundtrack which i liked a lot. Created the gritty atmosphere well. I imagine what todays take on a new one could be.

The gameplay was challenging, completing the Getaway felt more rewarding than Vice City. And although Vice city is a more fun game and has an awesome soundtrack, the story and atmosphere of the Getaway is just unbeatable. It was the first game I owned for my PS2 and I played it to death and repeated missions for fun, learning how to do them better, something like a challenge mode would have been a nice reward after finishing the game. Heck you unlock freerome after finishing the game and spent ages finding all the hidden cars, the TVR and the tank were very memorable :)

One of the reasons it didn't do well at least at launch here in the UK is they published "screen shots" of the game in a gaming mag, maybe playstation magazine I don't remember and these where hyper realistic and not in the final product. I remember at the time everyone at school was hype then seen reviews or played it at electronics boutique and it looked nothing like was promised. Love the channel mate and this game is ok now just wanted to give some info you may not have known as to why the game didn't do great in the UK atleast :)
