@@effisjens1776 Destruction Derby is a good game too but thats ps1 not sure if it was a PS2 game but id assume it probably was. my favorite racer though.... Super Nintendos Top Gear... Oh my god I loved that game as a kid I played it so much and I remember thinking the graphics and everything was so nice. Donkey Kong was another favorite of mine on the Super Nintendo but that Top Gear I still remember playing the game as a kid and feeling like I was ontop of the world. Fast and Furious also had an arcade machine that was amazing.... It was my go to whenever I would go to the arcade. I loved the handling and the gameplay versus some of the more realistic ones. Plus the more you played the more you could upgrade your vehicle ect and if you won you got to play again for free. Oh I loved that game and one time an employee started playing with me and gave me 25 bucks worth of credits and that ontop of the free games for winning was enough to last me all day.

Having a spiritual successor to this would be great. I highly recommend Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero, I consider it to be the best in the main series as a whole. Even though TXR3 may look better and has more tracks, Zero has more cars, better physics and better opponents (partly due to the physics in 3 also negatively affecting the opponent racers as they can't handle it) I also recommend Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2, part of the Drift sub series. If the main series is Shuto Expressway racing, then the Drift series is Touge racing. All those games above have really indepth customisation and even tuning mechanics that allows you to finetune the car mechanics which is uncommon for an arcade.

When I first played the game I would spent like 30 minutes to an hour after races learning the drift mechanics and I found out when you do the drift races clutch kicking was the way to go clutch kicking and and manual gears with a small Japanese car or a mustang (like no seriously a Ford mustang is a good drift car for this game) and just practice clutch kicking with those cars then go to each race and just get the feels for them in the first race then clutch kick to victory. In the race against DK I just spin him out then just drift like it was a normal race against the other drifters

That's a shame, really. Because in my opinion, the Fast & Furious movies had potential for great games. Not just in terms of racing, but I would've loved to play through some of the action set-pieces such as robbing semi-trucks, jumping onto a fleeing yacht, drifting up a parking lot, and many of the chases through city streets. Maybe it's just me, but I felt like there was so much potential you could do with a Fast & Furious game that isn't locked behind an arcade cabinet or mobile device.

Thank you for reviewing this game! When I first picked it up over a decade ago, I couldn't wrap my head around the physics either. However, there are definitely more skilled examples of drifting and driving that I found helped me learn to play: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2mmkImgqZqCjtU as an example of what fairly good drifting looked like back when people actively pursued being good at it. I helped guide some people into drifting this game back when it had a bit of a following. Common issues were the following: People attempting to drift AWD vehicles, using solely the brakes and ignoring the handbrake to keep drifts going, and also putting too much power into their vehicles. Part of this was people choosing cars that were popular in the scene at the time (the Lancer and Skyline being the biggest suspects) and also fruitlessly buying up in an attempt to overtake their hurdles with the game's drift model. Traditionally, drifting in the mountains used lower-power light cars that didn't exactly need a ton of persuasion to get them sideways (and stay there), and I found that the game's physics attempted to emulate this. Driving that AE86 with middle-tier power upgrades works far better than maxing out an expensive highway racer - the part descriptions often recommend horsepower limits for each set of tires, and what limit they have before being uncontrollable. In some cases, when using vehicles like the Corvette to drift, we found it more beneficial to actually wear grip tires because of how easy it is to break traction without any tire upgrades at all. Choosing the right gearbox was also important, as often people would skip over the transmission upgrade descriptions and keep "buying up" - they too, note which ones have shorter and longer gears, helping you choose the one that will get you to the highest speed VS the one that will get you the best acceleration between drifts. So, despite what comments you found - I would go out on a limb here and say that the physics are as bad as players aren't willing to be curious about them. The drift model that the game uses was something very new at the time, and attempted to be very un-arcadey for what the game was. It is very important to understand the difference between the brakes and the handbrake. One will slow you, the other will help you keep your drift going. You can, after a lot of practice and time, become quite consistently great at drifting. The first time I drifted the full half-circle at the base of the damn in the first touge was probably one of the most validating experiences I have had playing any racing game. This is a great review, and I love that you shed some light on a game that my friends and I hold quite dearly. Keep up the great work!

Just some quick notes for those who want to play the game. Tuning upgrades really do play a big role on how you want your car to drive (sometimes even real life tips on car setups can be applied to this game). The fastest car is an NSX i think, i remember hitting 246 mph by using a transmission upgrade specifically made for top speeds. For drifting i recommend using these techniques : Feint, Side brake, accel off (recommended for MR cars), and lastly an unusual way to drift is by hitting the gas and the handbrake at the same time as it could initiate a drift for some reason and it works best with a feint style approach to a corner. You could also find an actual drifting tutorial in the game, just scroll to the right until you hit the last car in the touge menu and you could find Daijiro Yoshihara lol. There you could learn a lot of techniques and some other stuff. Also i dont know if this is true for the ps2 version but if you make a u turn at the starting point of the Feint Drift stage, you somehow can have the entire touge to yourself as long as you dont drive to the finish line up the mountain (Despite other tutorial stages having them locked in a timer when you drive the opposite of the intended way for the course). Recommended cars for drifting : obviously the RX 7, any MR car (yes that includes the nsx and the toyota mr2), any silvia could work too i think, and the AE 86. As a disclaimer to that i have never tried any other cars like the s2000 or whatever so you could try other cars as long as they are FR or MR. Lastly, if you feel as if the handling makes you puke try changing the differential. For drifting, top speed isnt that essential compared to acceleration so use transmission upgrades specifically made for accel (you can read its desc to know which is which).

Given the demonstrated driving ability I thought you were going for a big red P-plate on that Evo! To explain the joke for non-Australian drivers: Before receiving a full licence new drivers in Australia are first issued a provisional licence which imposes certain restrictions (speed limit, number of passengers, etc.). When driving a vehicle they must display a red (later green) letter "P" next to their registration plate.
