California will soon begin requiring fast food restaurants to raise their minimum wage from $16 to $20 an hour. But restaurants say a higher wage could mean fewer workers. Robert Handa reports.

When the minimum wage went to $16 bucks an hour, The fast food industry also did massive layoff. But they were swamped with customers and had to hire people to cover the shifts. It's going to happen all over again.

The minimum wage, started in 1938 and was designed to keep a family out of poverty. Yet it has not done so since 1968 The only thing any of us really have is time. Don’t you think it’s fair for a business to compensate people for the time they give up doing whatever task you have them do?
@Robert_L22
@Robert_L22 4 ай бұрын
@@emilyfeagin2673 Businesses, large and small, don't operate to provide jobs, they exist to produce goods and/or services in exchange for a fee. What most people fail to understand is that every business must operate within a budget to produce a profit. If they fail to remain profitable, they'll cease to exist and every one of their employees will be out of a job. Employees are paid a salary or hourly rate based on their agreed upon value (time and skill/contribution) in producing goods or services. I've been on both sides of the employee/management coin. How many employees do you know who can sit down and accurately hammer out an annual budget 15-18 months in advance AND forecast the economy, the weather, the price of electricity and fuel, insurance rates, insurance costs, deductibles, equipment purchases, building leases, zoning requirements, environmental fees, and changes in the marketplace? Not many, I'm sure. And this doesn't even factor in the number of employees who work for a week and then leave. Hiring and training is extremely expensive in a world where employees are coming and going like they're walking through a revolving door. Try telling Google/Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, Disney, and Apple that they need to charge their customers less and pay more to their Minimum Wage employees. They'll laugh. A lot has changed in the 85 years since Minimum Wage was created.

Burger King was using kiosks in Sweden 10 years ago because of high labor costs there. In addition, unlike America where most of our immigrants are willing to work, most immigrants to Sweden are Muslims who would rather collect welfare as it gives them free time to protest all the supposed indignities they suffer from being immigrants to the EU. 😐

It’s really just math that clearly most people don’t understand. A wage is just a metric of labor. You can’t increase the metric at the bottom without increasing it all the way up the food chain. If skilled laborers made 20.00 before, they’ll want to now make 25-30. If managers of skilled laborers made 30-40 before, they’ll need 50+. How long before every job that brings you the things you want and need increases by 15-25%. Then we’re back where we started and we do this all over again. Wake up dumb people. It’s just basic math.

Regarding California's fast food wage hike to $20 from $16, a worker at McDonalds told me the franchise owner cut hours -- especially overtime hours which was $24 and now is $30, nobody was laid off, the prices were not increased, the restaurant didn't go out of business, and the workers are happier as they have a bigger paycheck without working overtime hours to pay their bills. You could even guess that the only major change is that the workers have to work more efficiently -- but they are able to due to not being as tired having 8 hour shifts rather than 12 hour shifts. Or 32 hour weeks compared to 40 hour weeks.

In 2022-23, state, local, and federal funding for California K-12 public schools was roughly $127 billion, compared to roughly $133 billion in 2021-22 (estimates as of July 2023). “Roughly, a $24 billion erosion in revenues corresponds to a $15 billion increase in the budget problem. This would expand the $58 billion estimated deficit to $73 billion under our updated revenue forecast,” the LAO report read. That means lawmakers are going to have to find “new budget solutions” to ensure a balanced budget for the 2024-25 fiscal year. The LAO said solutions could include increasing revenue, reducing either - or both - one-time and ongoing spending, and exploring the possibility of cost shifts or dipping into reserves. Department of Finance director Joe Stephenshaw said in January one early action item would involve increasing the managed care organization tax by $1.5 billion to help fund a Medi-Cal expansion for undocumented immigrants. Newly enacted state law providing free health care for all illegal immigrants residing in California could cost taxpayers between $3 billion and $6 billion per year, according to recent estimates by state and federal lawmakers.

This is entirely foreseeable. Raising the "fast food" minimum wage above the "regular" minimum wage has to be one of the stupidest things California has ever done (and that is a LONG list!). Closures and increased automation are the inevitable results.

Minimum wage jobs needs to stay under $15 /hour. They're jobs that don't require any education or a highschool diploma. I suggest getting a better job that pays better. If fast food workers is demanding a higher minimum wage, it effects other goods/services. Expect fewer customers to eat at fast food places since the prices will go . Restaurant closures will be coming. I wouldn't want to pay those ridiculous prices. I have been cooking more at home to get more of my money's worth.

Why not let the free market decide? If they cannot get people to work for low wages, they would need to pay more. I don't think that will happen because we have plenty of labor supply offsetting demand.

I remember when they did this with health care. Requiring businesses to give all full time workers health benefits. Surprise surprise you now work 30 hours and don't qualify and the smug politicians when confronted with the reality told us that working 30 hours gives us more free time to explore ourselves.... while forgetting the whole health care issue.
