Viktor Axelsen has been untouchable and became World Number 1 in 2017. Until his nightmare, Kento Momota returned and took his place in 11 months. Fun fact: There are only two names that dominated the World Number 1 spot from 28/09/2017 to 04/06/2024 - Viktor Axelsen and Kento Momota. Viktor Axelsen - 183 Weeks Kento Momota - 166 Weeks.

The difference is that Momota's dominance was unchallenged. There was no one who even seemed close to him. There are many who seem close to Viktor. Close enough to even beat him. People forget that in the 2019 world championship, Momota won the second set 21-3.

momota dominance is proved as he lost only 14 matches out of 200 matches after his comeback till 2020 , which amounts to bloody 92% win rate and that too against chen longs, gintings , lin dan, shi yu qui , to name a few and with world championships and 11 titles in a year guiness book of world record

@@MiniShuttle 2017 was also, if my memory serves me well, the first year after KM gaming problems and his suspension that he came back, so he had to start from almost scratch. I always believed Japan killed the golden goose for more than a year. He may well have gotten Olympic medalist. Allin all KM had some shitty career problems, the gaming problems, the severe accident and Covid time. If he wasn’t suspended he may well have been nr 1 for many more weeks and do I mean a lot more.

Kento Momota likely would have been an Olympic medallist in Rio 2016 if not for the gambling ban. He was definitely favoured to win gold in Tokyo 20/21 if not for horrific car accident. We would have had a blessed Momota/Axelsen era after Lin Dan/Lee Chong Wei retired.

@@HolgerDanske874 we all know that’s the case. But you seem to forget that KM had a severe accident and never returned to his former glory. VA never had such bad luck so KM after 2020/2021 was never at his best anymore, VA was at his best. So, to say the least, VA had all the luck in the world with KM accident. And yes, I do not think VA feels good about this but it made him the topplayer instead of KM. And, don’t get me wrong, I do like both players but KM really was a lot better in the years before your mentioned game, the thrashed VA in almost all games, see the head to head. Looking at your name you might be biased but fair is fair, KM was the best, just a real large amount of bad luck on his side.

@@tonp2917 VA had numerous injuries his entire career. After his ankle surgery he won every game he played against Momota. KM didn't break a single bone in his accident, you're just using the accident as an excuse for him getting found out. As soon he couldn't just defend and outrun Axelsen anymore he lost his advantage. Axelsen is the better player, this is why Axelsen is the 2nd GOAT after Lin Dan and this is why he won 2x Olympic Gold, 2x WC, 2x AEO and 5x Season Finals.

Momota had dominance in net play, defense and stamina taking out the biggest assets Axelsen needed to use his superior height for smashes. This japanese talent was really what Axelsen needed to take his game to the next level for winning the OG golds because it uncovered the weaknesses no other players could expose. Just like LCW and Lin Dan they were made to be rivals that pushes each others careers forward.

While VA is good, he is not anywhere near the great territory. I saw a video of prime VA vs old man LCW, and VA lost by straight sets. He has been fortunate enough to win two gold medals, but I don't think he is anywhere in the league of LD, LCW, and KM..

You don’t consider a two time Olympic champion one of the greats? And we’re expected to take you seriously?

Just more silly anti Viktor Axelsen propaganda. Just silly. Everybody with badminton knowledge knows, VA moves so much better after the opperration, and would probably be eating Momota alive, in wich case HE DID, after VA surgery 2-0 for VA. Further more every1 knows there is only 1 guy ahead of VA on the GOAT list know, and thats Lin Dan, rest is below.

Well Momota was losing against everyone after his accident and covid and another back injury. If he was able to stay competitive he wouldn't retire before the age of 30.

At least Axelsen can take solace in two Olympic gold medals. A feat never accomplished by your beloved Momota 😂
