How we got started here...
My dad figured out an interesting way to travel the country on a budget several years back in a converted minivan.. I loved hearing his travel adventure stories and it was truly inspiring to learn you don’t need to be loaded to have a good time traveling and exploring. We haven't been able to afford a real vacation in over 6 years, pretty much since I left my career as a firefighter/paramedic back in Illinois due to PTSD.
My phone must have been eavesdropping because I started getting video suggestions about campervan conversions. I went down that rabbit hole and was blown away by some amazing builds people have done. I instantly fell in love with the concept. We didn't have that kind of money it takes for a pimped out van and we weren't even sure we were going to like it but we do have a small van which was a good start. It's an ugly weird brown extended minivan that gets amazing gas mileage. A neighbor called it a gangbanger soccer mom mobile lol! This van had been so reliable and never left us stranded!
We bought it used in 2013 when we were taking a lot of family road trips wasting $ on renting.
It became so important to us when I left the fire service. It was then used to start my handyman business which grew and soon I could afford a work truck. The van became back up. Seven years later, we almost sold it for $500!
Instead we decided to convert our van into an adventure van so we can camp and budget travel while our daughter is at school. We always loved camping but really hate setting up tents in the dark since we’re always late for everything lol! It’s made a huge impact on our lives as we take many mini trips now!
This van is super nostalgic so it was perfect for this project.
We’re glad to say it worked out and now we are hooked! We're taking full advantage of our situation. This is OUR time. We aren't waiting until retirement to explore this world. We are focusing on us now that our daughter is away.
As mentioned before we picked up a full size Chevy high top camper van started by someone else. We plan to finish it
while redoing some things to fit us, a little at a time while we live that adventure life! We will show that process and tour it when it’s closer to being finished.
We are extremely grateful to every person who subscribed, it means a lot. We are working to make these videos better and better. We always appreciate your feedback.
Also, this is new for us. We are posting links to products we have used and love for those who may be interested. We will do some in depth reviews coming soon. If you purchase anything from amazon through any link here we get a small commission which helps support this channel.

That wall was only 2 feet high. On the other side it's flat for about 10 to 15 ft out before it starts any kind of decline. Hard to tell with the camera angle. Yeah I've heard the music kind of loud, you can turn on subtitles if needed but if there is something you wanted to know you could just ask me. I definitely need to keep that in mind for future videos! Thank you for your feedback 🙏

@gino_colucci
@gino_colucci 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I built everything around the bed once we figured out the sizing for us. Started with 2x2 frame attaching the van floor and walls with L brackets. Used underlayment for counterd and sides to keep it lighweight, doubled up certain strip sections to make it stronger where needed. Added hinges for outside table and inside counterd, then painted everything. It was all done custom on the fly, the cheapest way possible. Didn't want to sink a Tom of cash into until I know it will work out for our needs. I hope this helps!

Ive been exploring many camping options: cab over camper, box truck, work van, etc. currently using my subaru outback. However, i never considered a family mini van for a camper. Great idea and nice set up
@gino_colucci
@gino_colucci 2 жыл бұрын
We were the same way actually. I really wanted a cabover on my pickup truck but it's only a 1500. Those things just weigh too much you need at least a 2500 to haul anything decent. Then considered a teardrop trailer for towable pod to sleep in but we really don't want to have to tow anything unless it's kayaks or an ATV. The minivan made the most sense especially because we already had the van which was half the battle. Worked out great and we upgraded to a high top van but we still use the minivan :)

Nice. Your side window screens are a good idea, I could use them in my minivan. I saw from your reply to an earlier comment that the frames are made from ¼" plywood, I think you've motivated me to try something similar. I've been using magnets to put screen fabric outside the windows. Once I stopped where the mosquitos were really bad and was almost entirely devoured by the time I got them on. 🤣 So I need an inside screen solution, yours is good.

If the two of you can be happy with that size space inside, then I should be content alone in my SUV. I have everything in mine as you do. Plenty negative space. But some how I can't let go of the "WANT" of a van. I just want a regular van like this brown one.
@gino_colucci
@gino_colucci 2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes we go out in our 4x4 pickup truck with a tent on the back. We built a platform so we can put gear under the bed and transfer the mattress from the minivan so we sleep in comfort. It is all we really need for a good time and beats a tent on the ground for sure. Those days are over unless we decide to do aome backpacking trips lol. Obviously we only do it in decent weather and to get to hard-to-reach remote places requiring high clearance vehicles, so it's a trade-off because the van is much more comfortable. I have considered and I've seen a lot of people with a pickup truck having a camper shell and are perfectly content with the setup. Especially if you will be by yourself. We actually stepped it up recently from the brown minivan to a full-sized high top van that we can stand up in! We still have the brown minivan urban stealth camping and a backup. Raquel uses it as a daily driver currently and I'm full size van is parked until we use it.

Check out this link. This is where the idea came from. My version was more cost effective as I was able to make the sections the same size as body pillows so I can you body pillow covers. He explains the concept and and design features yet the measurements depend on your size and available space. I made ours my length (head to toe), as wide as possible and low enough to sit up without hitting head yet high enough off thw ground to allow for storage bins underneath. Good luck, it was fun to build! kzbin.info/www/bejne/nmjHfmeXm72cp5o

First thing we do when parked is move the seats all the way forward which allows that counter to come down and it ooens up the space.Everyyhing was custom built to the contours of the van yet assuring thw sliding door still functions so we can get at the tanks and atorage

@@kaysmith6297 the plastic is suprisingly strong. I did secure the plastic panels to the van with longer self tapping screws first (predrill first and make sure the screws are not too long!) Then screwed the L brackets into the panels with shorter screws (again predrill holes) I was not afraid to make holes as this van will not be resold. We will be the last owners lol! @gino_colucci

Thank you Leese! I used 1/4 " underlayment. Traced the shape needed on cardboard and made a template. Used that to cut the underlayment. Made a lip on 3 sides which are glued with construction adhesive (loctite instant grab) clamped and let it cure. Then I painted it to match. Installed with L brackets into the vinyl side panels with screws. The L brackets had to be bent with pliers to get the correct angle for leveling the shelves. I use mini bungee cords to help support the shelf and contents in place when traveling.

Like your minivan conversion. We've always loved road car trips and had a Winnebago Travato van that we loved. Sadly, we had to part with it after about a year due to circumstances unrelated to the van. Now we are planning to purchase a minivan (move manageable for me if I need to drive it). Enough said about that. We noticed your window screens and are interested to purchase some (after we get the minivan, of course). Can you supply information about where to purchase the ones that were in your slider windows or if you made them yourselves, do you have a video posted?
@gino_colucci
@gino_colucci Жыл бұрын
Hi Peggy, thank you for taking the time to comment. Unfortunately, I don’t have a video for the windows as a custom made them flying by the seat of my pants. I had no idea what I was doing lol! It was an experiment that paid off! They are not perfect, but they worked. I pieced together a cardboard template for the windows exactly where I wanted them to sit. I bought quarter inch plywood and I use the jigsaw to trace a 1.25 inch frame, spray painted that black and then I staples screen fabric to that. They are held in place mostly by friction and a couple screws. The frame cannot be thick. That’s why I did it inch and a quarter it needs to be somewhat flexible. I was not afraid to put screws in my paneling because it’s an older van. when I made the frame, I notched around the pop out lover. At night I stuffed the little gap with extra screaming material, rolled into a ball pretty much. That was the only logical way I can see to deal with those wings style pop outs.

I actually have a full-size Chevy van that I use for camping now because I plan on taking much longer trips for a healing journey. I think that’s a great way to honor him and he will be guiding you. I know that for sure. I always feel Racquel guiding me and has put some amazing people in my life since she passed. That has been very detrimental to my healing process. One thing you and I can appreciate the most. Is that NOW is all we really have and can count on. My beautiful wife had that mindset and that’s the reason we started doing that we didn’t have the money to travel, but we found a budget solution and it was working for us. No we weren’t able to do it full-time but we are able to take long weekends. But most people do those kind of things when they retire. Even if you can’t retire yet or you decide against it you can still maybe take long extended trips before you retire to get a feel for everything. That would probably be good because then you can make some tweaks before you do it full-time get it set up just right. 😀

@gino_colucci
@gino_colucci 2 жыл бұрын
No problem they each have there own place, advantages/disadvantages. The minivan was a perfect starter but it is limited on spaceand storage which is fine for anything less than a week IMO. We are now taking longer trips though. When we checked out the high top van, the insulation at the ceiling was missing but that let us stand up inside so we left it that way! I am 5' 9". Once your are able to stand up and have ample storage it makes the disadvantages petty. Insulation is not a priority as there is a maxx fan and plenty of windows with screens and we won't be traveling in extreme weather. Here are the disadvantages of the full size van. Obviously decreased gas milage, wind noise while driving and harder to handle on windy days. No parking garages and not stealthy. For what we do now and future needs it is perfect for us and like it much better as comfort is the most important aspect for us. We still have and love our minivan. Raquel uses it as a daily driver and we love it for urban stealth camping when checking our cities since the big boy is not stealthy.

Question. We are tent campers but are exploring the idea of sleeping in our minivan. While tent camping, all the food and drink is stored in the car overnight so as to not attract bear or entice the raccoons. If we sleep in the minivan I would like to add a netting to the raised hatch to allow ventilation but then I am sleeping in the same area as the food. I am concerned critters may try to get into the van through the open netted hatch. I think a YETI cooler and food stuff sacks that lock in the scents may be the answer and maybe food storage in a car top carrier. Do you have any suggestions or comments? Thanks.
@gino_colucci
@gino_colucci 2 жыл бұрын
Yes! The cooler we have that is seen in the video is bear proof! It's a ROVER cooler. It's expensive like a Yeti but the wheels are made for gravel and sand so you can take it anywhere but glides easily over those terrains. Ours is pretty big but they have smaller versions. Make sure it will fit your space. Their website has measurements. I highly suggest looking into it. If you are in the Southwest do not get the cuttingboard made of bamboo it will warp. I think they sell a different version now. There is a link in the description. Let me know if you go that route or have any other questions.

i do not, however the idea came from Eric Enjoys Earth and it is one of his most popular videos! I did a different version based off what he does but it is very similar. The measurments are up to you and your needs but the design princible is the same. Far example he seems much taller than I so the height and length will be different to maximize precious space and storage. Also I just used Body pillow cover sheets for wrapping the sections. Made it more budget friendly I was lucky the measurments for my cut sections allowed for this!
