Kris, I can't speak for anyone else, but I personally would love to see a Bob Ross style show where you start off with a new miniature and do a simple but elegant paint from start to finish much in the same vane as this video. You have a wonderful style, a soothing voice, and putting your videos on in the background while focusing on another task (especially painting) always makes any task that much more of a pleasure. Thank for the time, Kris, appreciate all the quick tips!

I did enjoy it! Especially your affable nature, your inclusiveness in being open to other techniques, and your relaxed state. These are the things that shine through. As a beginner when it comes to blending, I like all the tips as well: the ratio of retarder to paint, the type of brush, the sequence of paints (starting with the mid-hue), and the placement of the paints to emphasis shadows and reflections. Sir, very good!

Just want to thank you for this video. I just started painting mini's about a month ago and most of the "tutorials" tend to do a lot of fast forwarding.. Which is fine for people who are looking to expand skills, but for a newbie, actually seeing the whole process is a big help. Yes the video can run long for people who already have some skills, but this definitely helps the new person. I wish all tutorials had 2 versions. A short to the point edited one and a real time one like this with commentary showing exactly how it is done and also explaining why.

Dude.... great work and thank you for freeing us from the tyranny of layer-dry-layer-dry-highlight. Although wet blending has the same steps the lack of drying time gives different and in my thoughts much better results. This definitely ups my game. Again great stuff.... like your style too.

Really great presentation, very likeable and pleasant to watch. First time I actually smiled and laughed whilst watching a painting tutorial! You really share enthusiasm and a positive vibe with regards to painting! Do you (or of course your channel) have videos that groups painting techniques into something like beginner, intermediate and advanced painting skills? I for instance would consider myself somewhere between beginner and intermediate, currently looking to improve my techniques. However, I don't know where to start: some techniques seem too advanced to start next (e.g. effects on gems don't help me much if the rest of the model still looks really mediocre). So I just jump from watching one tutorial to the other without really applying any of that as I'm not sure what I should invest time into next. Really I guess what I would be asking for is an overview of a. which basic techniques and tips every beginner should now and master before advancing, b. some sort of guide as to which techniques (and in which order) to master in order to improve gradually from thereon.

Hey Kris! Could you do a quick tip video showing us how to paint force weapons or lightning effects?
@calcinatoir8 жыл бұрын
Retarder doesn't have any binder in it, that's why it causes it to 'bead' as he said since the pigment drops out of suspension. This can be avoided by diluting the retarder with acrylic medium before mixing into the paint, but of course this means slightly less working time. Gotta find the balance but it's not too hard.
@lv2bf1118 жыл бұрын
There are 2 kinds of retarder. Retarder medium and fluid retarder. It seems like Vallejo is closer to the fluid and will be prone to the beading problem. Liquitex makes a retarder medium that is thicker but has the binder and mixes much better. I am sure other brands have it, but I know Liquitex does. On a different note. Excellent video.

Do you use a wet pallet these days? If not then could you perhaps share with us your views on why not to use one? Is it just personal preference , never bothered with one? I am interested why an accomplished miniature artist such as yourself wouldn't use all the weapons in the arsenal. When I first picked a brush up a couple of years back and was looking for as much how to paint info as I could absorb and learned fast of the benefits of a wet pallet and quickly set about making one and putting it to good use, I don't think I would even attempt to paint without one, but like I say I am interested why not to use one if theres a good reason?? Reading this back it may come over as aggressive or trolley ,I assure you I am not being a smart ass just inquisitive. Thanks Kris.

So.. That was great, But I was wondering about thinning the paint down. Is that something that's not needed with wet blending? or should we still add the water with the retarder?
@egoleech10 жыл бұрын
I'm just enjoying watching you paint. I don't even play or paint. But this seems like a pretty complicated method for a "simple" task ? I mean couldn't you achieve the same effect with washes, highlights and drybrushing?
@TTWarGames10 жыл бұрын
Nope, drybrush looks to dirty and not smooth enough. And yes there are other, maybe easier ways to paint a gradient. But washing and drybrushing doesn't do the same. Maybe an airbrush can do something similar.
@jebeddo088 жыл бұрын
Egoleech yes you can. After you base colors, use a shade and then several highlights and layers and you will be fine

Is the retarder the thing making the paints watery like that?
@relic41568 жыл бұрын
+Trafalgar Retarder slows down the drying time, so you can work with the paint longer before it dries. However, it shouldn't be used to thin the paint (roughly, no more than 1 part retarder to 3 parts paint), because if you use too much it might make the paint take ages to dry. Thinning medium is what you want to use to thin your paint. You can also use water or a combination of thinning medium and water.

+Gefy'sHorror For orks, Get a darker green, a green wash, and a lighter green, this is the ork skin, base it, wash it and highlight it, then get some leather colours for the pants and do the same process, and so on and so forth. For each colour you want on the model, you should have a base, wash and a layer for a highlight.
