A tip for helping cut costs. If you and a friend want to get into the game, consider splitting the cost of a large box set. My roommate and I split the large Indomitus box, me taking Space Marines and he took the Necrons. We lived together so sharing books wasn't an issue, but it can help with model costs. Also it bears mentioning, the game "Table Top Simulator" will allow to play Warhammer easily at only the cost of the game. It isn't nearly as fun, you miss out on painting models, but it at least lets you get a feel and understanding for the game.

Meh! It is likely your opponent will be at least the same level as you with the books. You can always agree to play at the old points structures. No one says you have to buy the brand new stuff straight away. Everyone knows about the hip pocket nerve. And I believe FAQ is on the web for free, they clarify rules and update errata or misprints. What usually costs are Chapter Approved and New Codexes. The latter stuff usually come out because of the unintended consequences of rules and advantages conferred on one force or another. Also, find a club to join and you will get more like minded guys who will also have advice and cheap stuff to swap or sell. Finally, initially rulers and dice are really the only hardware you need. You can get dice from a dollar store for nix, they just wont look as snazzy but they will be unique. Tape measures from your big barn type hardware store where they will sell a small tape measure (Retractable) for a buck.

One potential cost reduction for a beginner, the Core Rules (containing the Basic Rules and 1 mission, and a bit of imagination will get you more missions) are available as a free download, and the (original) unit datasheet is often included in the box. So you don't necessarily NEED the Rulebook and Codex to start playing if you just thought the models looked pretty and suddenly own a few squads. You can get a few good games in that way before diving into the advanced stuff, and it means you can start your first steps into the hobby by buying models.

Short and cheap version is a few apps, basic rules you got from watching KZbin and enough stuff to proxy 2 forces and some terrain. I recommend empty bottles and jenga blocks as terrain and Mah Jong tiles as units. Dice are rolled via free app and paper rulers you can get for free from Ikea. But the most important thing are people to play against who are into such games. Find them and win them over!

This would honestly put me off if I was looking to play 40k again. Army books, extra books, extra dice, measuring things, all of that is surely unnecessary to get started and will just put anyone off who's looking at all the stuff they "need" to get. When I used to play you could just buy one starter box set and you were good to go - it had all the rules, two armies and some cardboard terrain to get you started. Looking around GWs website there is nothing like that now. The closest thing they have is First Strike: A Warhammer 40,000 Starter Set, which gives you 3 tiny squads basically, but no rule book and no terrain (a single tiny box, really doesn't count). Yeah, it's only £25 so that makes it seem ok, but as soon as you realise you don't have the rule book you might feel bummed out when you can't learn all the rules. From the outside, it doesn't look very inviting. Especially when you see things like Chapter Approved and realise you will have to buy new books every year. It's just too much DLC without an easy way to get the full game. They should have a higher tire starting box that has the rule book in, some core troops with a couple of simple terrain pieces - cardboard ruins. Something to give you the full flavour of the game without all the extra DLC baggage. There are 97 items in the Start Here section, none of them are a box that contains everything you need to actually start playing. It also appears to still be suffering from the EVERYTHING IMPERIAL problem it's always suffered from. In your local GW: "Oh what do you collect, Space Marines." "Oh yeah, me too" Space Marines Vs Space Marines Vs Space Marines Vs Space Marines Vs Imperial Guard Vs the various other newer Imperial factions. It doesn't make sense to release so much of what is the same faction when in law there is little to no reason for those factions to fight each other. Bulk out the more interesting factions and give people coming into the hobby more of a reason to collect something other than Space Maries. Like, make a starter box with two none Imperial factions so that when new players start they don't just collect space marines. Maybe when they sort out some of these issues I might look into playing again. But until then I think I'll stick to the more interesting smaller companies out there.

there are multiple starter boxes though. theres a $50 box (wh40k recruit edition) that has 2 small armies and a map to play with and every thing you need. theres a $140ish box (wh40k command edition) that comes with the armies, the big book of rules and some terrain as well. The core basic rules are free on their site to. Not to mention you can "acquire" big rule books and codices pretty easily. Shit you could play for a flat fee of $20 on table top simulator. I mean if you're a zero effort baby who's put off by measuring and dice then you weren't gonna get into the hobby any way.

If price is an issue for some people there are decent alternatives to "official" 40k, so long as you're playing casually with friends. "One Page Rules" is a website with a greatly simplified take on 40k's rulebooks. Not only does it have army books for all playable factions, but it also has entries for discontinued and homebrew armies, such as Squats ("Dwarf Guilds") and Space Skaven ("Ratmen Clans"). Best of all, it's free! Also, you don't necessarily have to use the official GW models. Manufacturers like Vanguard and Onslaught produce some really good 15mm models that are not only cheaper, but you get more of them to boot! There's even a fan made 6mm conversion called "Pocket 40k" that can be played with magnets on a metallic whiteboard!

Oh, the objective marker size being in metric despite the rest of the game being in Imperial units (it actually uses US SAE measurements for consistency's sake, and those are defined using metric unit conversions) is due to base sizes being in metric. 40mm is the second smallest round base size (and third smallest square base), so making your own objective markers can be done using GW bases.

You don't HAVE to have the Chapter Approved books if you're not in an organized competition. Even then some competitions won't use or allow certain things (like if a certain book is brand new) and smaller tournaments (like a little one out of your local game store) might not care as long as you are consistent with which books you are using (no cherry picking to make a broken combo).

Hello, I am a new player, I found your channel to learn the basic rules of WH40k. Would it be possible to do a video as part of this series that goes over getting in the hobby, like essential tools, good places for find games, or other tips for people just entering the hobby?
@Hannah118764 жыл бұрын
Newbie here. One huge downside is that the beginner is required to buy multiple books (rules book, 1or 2 codex books from different fractions, etc. knowing these things can become obsolete sooner then thought)...all of this not counting in the costs for a 'start collecting set', different paints, brushes, knifes and other essential stuff. I know the argument here is that why criticize a hobby that you are not forced to follow. I really understand this reasoning. But at one point, the entire 40k franchise should be welcoming new players...in the end the more people play 40k the more revenue it generates and more popular it will get. The lore is fascinating, the tabletop is so complex and interesting but new players are scared off easily by the immense costs BEFORE even setting a single foot into 40k. I have been trying to get into 40k and am trying to convince friends to join me. Believe it or not, I have 4 friends who are stoked by the lore and would love to jump into 40k but for what its worth it, the starting cost scares them extremely off. They are not willing to pay 200-300 bucks for rule books and collecting stuff, being unable to properly play because the army you have is anything but near the 500 point mark. The ideal solution would be to offer cheap absolute beginner sets for newbies with a respectable point army, 1/2 cheap brushes, tiny amounts of test paint/glue, and some very basic rules sheets...all of it for a low starting price so people can get into the franchise in a respectable pace and fair price.

If you can use books and cups for terrain can you use a 1 inch tall piece of cardboard with an S on it written in crayon for a space marine?

Honestly, I'm starting to feel gaslit. I read through the rule book and still have no idea how melee/close combat really works and then I look for tutorials like this one and don't get a explanation either! What is going on? It is as if everyone is playing this game with a huge hole in the rules and nobody but me is bothered by it. How do you figure out who fights first and who last in a second round of combat? What if a first round of combat doesn't result in one of the combatants being wiped out or falling back? What if both sides survive the first round, stay tied up in combat and have to fight a second time without anyone being able to charge? Why does nobody, including the effin' rule book, explain basic stuff like that?

I'm new and lost with all the books in 9th ed already, for example indomitus rule books vs the core rule books, errata on the already release rulebooks, codex for necrons with already released errata, point costs between codexes and the munitorum chapter approved errata points differences and so much more! I'm lost where do I find my models points! What if my necrons codex points are outdated;

If you are playing a specific space marine chapter do you need the space marines codex or do you only need the codex for the chapter you are playing?
@MothmanSushi3 жыл бұрын
It depends on which chapter. Some chapters get their own codex supplement, for example Dark Angels just had theirs release, and you want that book. But if you are playing Ultramarines Or Imperial Fists it will just be in the space marine codex.

When I first start warhammer 40k it was 5th ed. I still have the space marines codex and got the rules online through torrents. only 2 books. Now you have to buy not only the rule book and the codex but the extra extra codex for your army PLUS spend 40 bucks every year on new points changes books, on tops of the new ed codexs as they come out. yeah I'll stick to getting them online again if I want to come back into the game :p

2000 Point Match Play is what you need Chapter Approved for. If you are not trying to destroy all competition in 2000 Point Match Play then you don't need Chapter Approved the Core Rules with Open and Narrative play work fine.
@miniwargaming4 жыл бұрын
That is completely true. However since most people want to play points it's important to teach how they work.

I think its a bad idea putting that one particular batrep in the Vault. If people are learning to play they maybe don't want to drop more money on something they don't even know they enjoy yet (like me) Or you could put it up in a playlist for free, get more viewers/players into the hobby, and then if they like what you do the subs will follow from there. Just my friendly advice

If any of you are concerned about the price and what not but want to at least try the game... Table Top Simulator exists and there's quite a large community of Warhammer table top fans who created assets to bring wargaming to the simulator. The only cost really is Table Top Simulator.

I know this video is 3 months old now but I just want to put this out just for some help. I have never played miniatures or TCG's before and just last year I started to play Dragon Ball Super TCG. After going to my locals and losing everytime with deck after deck spending as much money as I did I just decided to quit. I was bored after and wanted a new hobby so I decided miniatures since they seemed a little cooler. The game I looked into was 40k and as I still wanted a TCG chose Magic. Over the course of the past 5 months I still haven't decided which to choose. I was wanting a game not only could I play almost anywhere but find places that supported games in general. Both games confuse me a lot and as much as I want to get into each game I still can't decide. For Magic however it's the many formats which I would have to create several decks with money I don't have and as far as 40k, models don't worry me but the fact that there is change and with a new edition it seems very complicated as well as learning the new statistics for a model. I have no where to turn and so I hope I get some help with what I should do. I want something simple yet complicated, something that is budget and community friendly, and lastly something I can enjoy and will stay and play for as long as I can. Honestly I never knew 40k was a thing and before I found a CCG for it and thought it was perfect until it was discontinued. I also looked at a game called Star Wars Destiny which was also discontinued and the same goes for Transformers CCG. Is there any game out there beside Magic though in which you can literally go to any local store and its supported. Pls don't say Pokemon or Yugioh and I understand Digimon is coming out but I want something with an established history and assortment of pieces. Also I have looked into both x-wing and legion and honestly I don't want to play anything by Fantasy Flight Games as it seems there games don't get support and eventually die out. I don't know where else to ask people and I don't exactly plan on anyone being a savior and telling me anything anytime soon but I just want to get some stuff off my chest. Really I am just giving myself anxiety and stress over games. I really don't know about myself sometimes

For the record: The Chapeter Approved 2020 books seem to have all the core rules. &, as well there's, The App & not too mention pdf's of the rules all over the inter-webs. So the big 'Get your workout in by lugging it around' Rulebook isn't a 'Must Have' to start out. Try the basic rules. Look up a Datasheet or 10 online & give it a shot. If you like it, then of course the Ginormous Rulebook, appropriate Codex's &/or Campaign Supplements, 1 [or more...] Start Collecting boxes or the new Starter Sets, &, &, &... Yeah, it may seem daunting at first. But you can ease into things. Combat Patrol &/or Crusades are perfect for "Slow Grow'". limited funds type situations. [& none of this factors in the Skirmish Battles of Warhammer 40k; Kill Team!] Take your time, enjoy the ride, don't worry about what you don't have. The longer you're in the hobby, the more your commitment, efforts & general "Want To!" will pay off. Hels, I started with the 2nd Edition boxset [25yrs+ ago!] & it was far, Far, FAR less a deal [comparatively] as todays "Get Started" options are. But *Know Ye this*~ The further you go down the Games Workshop/Warhammer 40,000 rabbithole, the more your monies will be swallowed up by the Warp! Blaster was here... & has been 'Grimdark'ing' longer than many wargamers have been alive!

Really wish they didn’t charge for updated points costs on the regular. I can understand charging for that kinda stuff on the drop of a new core codex or for a new edition, but charging yearly for chapter approved is a bit much.

I am a fan of the Imperial Guardsmen, and only have about 12 of them. Everytime I go to a game shop. I get laughed at and ignored. I have other army's at home and over 300 other miniatures but the guardsmen is my thing. I just store them away and move on to something else.

Seems like I need more and more books each edition. Just the books to start playing, before even models, painting, or other necessities, is well over $100.
@erutherford4 жыл бұрын
I got lucky last edition. Both of my armies only needed the main rule book & their codex. Expensive but at least I wasn't lugging around 5-7 books around to each game with rules scattered everywhere. Well the down side is the longer the edition went the lack of updates meant I kept losing more & more power as "everyone else" got updates to buff them up.
