Hi Roberto, when using AirPinPro how do you disable the Android Mouse Cursor? I am trying to use a drafting program and the andorid mouse cursor is huge and hard to see what I am clicking on. Hy Felix, Minix uses oneof the fastest storage available on th market an has a hug comunity with regular updates fixing bugs. Most budget boxes stay as they are with bugs etc. Although its always great to have more ram etc we are at a moment that the aps that we use cannot take advantage of what we do so 2GB or 3GB. But a fast flash storage will gives us a huge performance boost like using a old computer with a 5400rpm drive and the same computer with a SSD. But off course this will depend on each other particular taste etc. Is Minix one of the best in the Industry? Yes Regarding Remix IO, looks interesting and lets see how it comes 👍

(obviously I'm not Roberto but...) I would definitely recommend the Shield. I bought the U9-H but returned it the next day and bought the Shield instead. Oh boy what a difference! All apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime and KZbin all support 4k which it don't on the Minix box. Using the Minix feels like you're just mirroring your phone to your TV while as with the Shield it actually feels like a TV Box. Streaming from my NAS in kodi is so smooth even with a 80gb 4k HDR movie. I had alot of problems with Kodi using the Minix box, Audio was stuttering from time to time, panning shots had alot of jitter and I couldnt get 4k content to look good (was a bit blurry) and HDR didn't disable when i stopped the movie which was really annoying as the kodi menus and what not looks like shit when HDR is enabled.

Thanks for the reply! I'm not going to be using the Nvidia Shield for gaming.... more for Kodi / Media Streaming. I was also looking at the less expensive Fire TV Box - the biggest shortfall I see with this is that it only streams 4K @30fps (and less processing power). I know Nvidia Shield is far superior power wise and streams 4K @60fps - but is there any content on Kodi that is able to take advantage of this? Do you have any experience with the Amazon Fire TV? ... or any views on this? :)

Hi Nathan, i have both machines and i would say that if you prefer Android TV OS the shield is the way to go but if you prefer Pure Android the U9-H is the way to go 😃 The U9-H is about 120$ right now and the Shield 200$ at least here in EU and check the link on the video description its updated. The end decision is something that only each one of us can make according to our personal preferences Hope it helps and let us know when you chose one. The important is that we enjoy our device doesn't matter which 👍👍 RJ

Thanks Roberto! Greats reviews and buying guide. I am planning to buy the Minix U9-H and I am looking for some suggestions around the following queries. Your help would be greatly appreciated. 1) What kind of support/integration does the Android on the box or apps on it have for Voice Recognition devices like Alexa/Google Home? Essentially, I want my Alexa device to be able to play back music from my own Music collection (which I want to host and connect also to my Android TV Box). I understand that I could have Kodi or Plex index all my music on the Android TV Box, but would they be able to take voice commands coming in from the Alexa device? 2) Can you recommend any Live TV Streaming apps for the Android TV box? Does Minix come packaged with any TV channels streaming apps? 3) Are there any apps that would be able to do a scheduled recording of streaming shows playing back on the Android TV Box?

Hi Aron, i have connected with sucess a 8tb raid unit and works well 😉 just be sure to use a hdd enclosure that its self powered. Personally i use a NAS to store all my media on the network and its available for all my android boxes and other devices which is better than connecting directly to only one device 😉 think about it, its a great investment 👍

yes a NAS is handy but i only need a good transport replacement for my 4K UHD content which I dont think a NAS is the best option, so a good machine running KODI which can access a 6t-8t-10t harddrive ORICO Aluminum 8Bay is all I need but I need a good machine that runs KODI flawless ... this or the shield?

Hi Dyi, thanks!! 😊 The Minix U9-H is the fastest Pure Android TV Box at this moment and yes you can download any browser on it. It comes with one but we can go to the google play store and download chrome, firefox, opera or any other. One of the biggest advantages on Android is that there is no limitations on how we can use these devices 👍

Yes Davidson, Minix is one of my favorite brands which has been a pioneer in this "world of Android Boxes" but unfortunately for Netflix is not the best option. The app is called Netlix HD and you can search for it on google. For HD or superior on netflix: Shield TV, Mibox 3, Wetek Play 2, Wetek Hub 👍

Roberto Jorge Great review. I have a question, brother....since most of us know that the Shield can be rooted and converted into a Pure Android experience, which would you say is better between these two boxes? I know that if I purchased a Shield, I would 100% guarantee root it and open up full customization. If I purchased this Minix U9-H, same thing - I would use it for great customizations. Since I know I would not be gaming on the Shield (a big selling factor), why would anyone then choose the Shield over this Minix U9-H? I'm still trying to decide. Thanks so much.

Actually Roberto, I have a question you may be able to help with. Does the U9 have exactly the same power supply and cable with the U1? If it does, it means I can just replace the unit and leave the U1 cable in place....the power cable is difficult to get to with my Theatre system....lol Then use the new cable with the relocated U1....

Hi Prashant, you shoud get a webcam from logitech preference which seems to be the ones that work better on android and Minix has been for some years updating with those and you will need a wireless remote like the A3 included on the U9-H that has voice input and thats it :) RJ

Oi Simão 👍 Yeah the ATV is disappointing even the ATV 4K that i bought kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5O4qH-nmtt-bLM Now regarding Netflix honestly Minix is not the best choice on the market specially because it doesn't have a official license. At the time of recording there was a modified app that i used and shared a link that played HD but humm its not the official thing. If you use a lot of Netflix my choice is Nvidia Shield, Mibox 3 and Wetek Play 2 Try it and check if it plays enough for your usage or not, and if not ask for a refund or replacement for another unit RJ

A great Review is what I expect from RJ at all times. It costs almost as much as the Nvidia Shield is my only problem.

Hey John, thanks for the feedback. Its about 60€ cheaper than the shield but i believe that someone that can pay 150 can also pay 200 for a box. My perspective is the same when i reviewed the shield last year. For someone that prefers the Android TV OS the Shield is the smarter choice, for someone that wants Pure Android then the choices are much bigger but the U1 / U9-H probably are among the best choices we can do today. It all depends on how we use our machines

Hey Arun, thanks for the feedback!! Regarding those machines the U9-H is the fastest Pure Android Box, so its faster then the Mibox. I believe the choice will depend if you prefer Pure Android or Android TV OS. While Android TV is targeted at TV usage its limited in its app store and the way that we can install aps, while Pure Android will give us direct access to the "normal" playstore and easier to install aps etc. Kodi and all sorts of media will play fine on both but for netflix the Mibox will play up to 4K RJ 😃

Robert when i add apps from google playstore .. if i watch a video in that app it plays very small on screen..it will not let mw expand the screen to full... says i need to rotate the device...how do i make a video play in full? Had my U9 for about 2-3 weeks now and my feelings on it are mixed to be honest. Mostly I think it's great and works really well with the A3 remote (though I think the A2 Lite with the Enter and Mute buttons is more practical - as you've mentioned in your review as I find the voice search REALLY dodgy). The box is great and stable with Kodi 17.1 too. Minix apparently delayed the release of the U9 to release a near perfect box. Well, they failed, by a long way. You only have to check their forums for the problems users are having, particularly with colour space issues (overly dark picture), DTS, pass through etc etc. The recently released FW004 software update fixes several issues including, supposedly, the colour space. It recently got pulled though as it's broken. Now users await FW005 (or 4A). Although the colour space issue is apparently fixed I find the picture with Netflix and even using Kodi is markedly better on my Fire TV 2 and on that basis alone I'm not sure how long it'll be before the U9 gets relegated to the bedroom with the Fire TV back to the living room. The Fire works great with Kodi too, and benefits from having native Netflix HD, not the hack apk that you need on generic Android boxes, including the U9. The support and forums are OK, but just OK. Nothing to rave about. If you have problems, have a look, your issue MIGHT be there. But if it's not, don't post about it expecting much help. Many of the threads get zero reply and there seems to be a small clique of users for whom it's basically their own chat room, if your'e outside that mutual back-slapping club, expect little. You will find little enthusiasm to explore issues and will often get a "It's fine for me" or zero response to basic questions. I've found other forums far more useful, including those for the Shield. Overall it's an OK device, I'm sure it'll be fine, but it wasn't ready for release when they put it out and, unless you really need it's features, I'd go with the U1which is much more polished at the moment, it does however lack the ability to use external storage which the U9 with it's more up to date version of Android. I'm happy with the purchase and I'm sure it'll be a great box in time but I'll be watching closely how the picture quality stacks up against other devices, which is the MAIN reason for buying them!! If it doesn't, it's gone and I don't care how solid the brand name is, or how good the support is supposed to be!

Hey Danny, just depends if you prefer Android or Windows. Personally i prefer Windows for work (word, excel etc) and i prefer Android for multimedia consumption. Any of your choices it will be a great machine and i hope you enjoy it RJ 👍

Great review. If you had to choose between the U9-U with the A3 remote & a bluetooth game pad for around £170 or the Shield 2017 16g for only £20 more which one would you coose? I'm not too bothered about the game streaming but Kodi and Android Apps are a must.

Hey Axe, yes you just need to download any APK from the browser and install it, that easy hehe!!! PS: There are ways of rooting the U9-H as you can read on the minix forum but you dont need root to install those aps 👍👍 RJ

Hey Nigel, both the U9-H and the Shield have the best Wifi available and also the Mibox 3, they achieve almost the maximum of the available bandwidth. You will be able to stream with any of these 3 machines over wifi without issues at all. But have in mind that your network should be strong as well RJ 👍

Luis Vieira Alves the app that you can use on the nvidia sheild is Cetus play you need to download the Cetus play TV version from the Google store then on a seperate android tablet or phone you load the Cetus play APK on your phone now both device need to be on the same network this APK will allow you to side load a bunch of some that are built into the APK, also Cetus play can be used as a remote for your box you may also need to install Hal or side load launcher

No these machines like computers dont have GPS :) to use Maps we need to turn on "Location" trough the wifi / ethernet service so that it tells us where we are. As far as im aware there isn't a single box with GPS RJ 👍

Hi, quick question! I have been thinking about buying this device since it states that it play ts_video and .vob files. Have you seen anything while exploring the device that shows it can do this? I have been trying to find an android box that plays those files! I don't want to convert them.

Since you are a very good source and seem to be in touch with minix, I am actually having problems with this box! I've had mine for 4 days & it randomly froze while watching a movie, also while attempting to google search!! I had to unplug the power cable to restart the device because it's not responsive by remote or anything. On top of that, when I pulled the USB dongle to attempt to reboot the remote control, the housing pulled right off! I was like wth?? This has put a horrible taste in my mouth towards this product, not to mention there's no 1800 number for customer service or tech support! GRRR!!! I assume I've got a defective device, my only option was to send an email to the manufacturer about my problem. HELP!!!

Hey Wilb, sorry to hear that. Let me say that im a beta tester of some products but no privilege contact with minix. I do report bugs and help out on the sense that they have a better chance to improve user experience and like me there are hundreds of users like my self. For what i have hear i would say that its a faulty unit but i dont know what caused the freeze problem while watching a movie - Was it a Box problem? Was it a addon problem? The 1st thing i would advise is to ask a replacement unit from your seller and also let Minix be aware of it by going to the Minix Foruns and crate a topic about your issues and concerns and some users and also staff will be able to help. Also send a support ticket to Minix at [e-mail] and hopefully soon you will have your problem solved!! 👍

Mimix actually responded and after a few messages, he told me to reset the box itself and start over. Once I did that, things have seemingly been working out. I also, installed a vlc player instead of using the beta or mx player, in hopes that would fix the issue. Unfortunately I had to reinstall everything, I'll watch a movie tonight, to see if it'll freeze, before I retract my negative feedback on the product. I was shocked they didn't have a support line, because email correspondence is rather tedious since there's evidently a time differential but the agent has been pretty helpful.

Great review Roberto but for a little more your better off going for a Nvidia shield tv 2015 or even the 2017 model your benefiting from full Netflix and youtube up to 4k, and hdr support on the 2017 model plus so much more.if you want you can install full android nought on both shields

Hi Lister, the internal flash is 16Gb 11GB free +- but we can add up to 128GB on the micro SD card slot. I have only tested with 64GB which is the card that i have but i have seen reports of 128GB RJ

Not kidding actually, cause i do receive so many crazy questions that you have no idea. :) You have the Flash Storage that comes with the machine and i was not sure if you were asking about that which we are not able to upgrade (some people dont realize this and i have no way of guessing :) ) Nowadays everything is flash :) So to your question yes you may use USB Flash Drive up to 4TB like you would with a external HDD over USB 4TB. Hey Jack, no unfortunately the only android device that can host a Plex Server at this moment is the Nvidia Shield, which is unfair as these machines are more than powerful to do so. We actually see some NAS that have a lot inferior CPU´s in them and can have a PLEX Server...oh well hopefully will change in the future RJ 👍

Yet another great review, Roberto! Based on your comments - and my own experience with another S912-based box (Vorke Z1) - I would have listed something under negatives: A disappointing successor to the U1 released more than a year ago. The fault is in the S912 chip, of course ... not Minix build quality. Personally - especially since Minix was so late in releasing an S912 box - I wish they had leapfrogged over it to create a box based on the Realtek RK3399 (the specs of which are very impressive).

Hey Don and thanks for the feedback and support. I havent tried the Vorke Z1 but looks nice :) Regarding the negatives i see your point but the U9-H its not the successor or the U1. I know what you mean and Amlogic did something great with the S905 and not so much with the S912. Aving all that in mind i did record last night a video explaining my point of view regarding the U1 VS U9-H and by the end of this week should be online. I would apreciate if you take a look at that video and let me know your opinion afterwards (its one of those longer videos hehe) Thanks RJ PS: RK3399 looks impressive, lets see if it will hold against Amlogic. RK has been a sleep for the past couple of years, tey need to push it or they risk on losing more market than what they already did

My Zidoo X6Pro had Rockchip RK3368. It was a problematic box. Not fast at all. Mi Box with wireless connection is much faster and reliable than the Zidoo X6Pro. I'm not buying any box with Rockchip ever. Specs don't matter. Get them tested .

Thanks for your reply, Roberto! I *will* watch and comment on your video. For me, however, this is only of only academic interest. You see, I have the Nvidia Shield. Nothing else comes close. I was very happy with the Minix X8-H Plus that I used for almost two years ... and didn't bother getting the U1. Instead, I leaped up to the Shield and am thrilled with it ... although I acknowledge that not everyone wants to spend $200 (in the US) for a media streaming box. But, to me, a $140 box like the Minix X9-H (or U1) isn't sufficiently better than the entry-level $40 Fire TV Stick to justify the additional $100 cost.

Yahoo great surprise. After u1 and the x8h-plus being available for quite a while now I didn't have much faith minix would release an android 6 box. But here they are :-) I wanted an x8hplus for awhile but talked myself out of it for being an older version of Android. Then the 2017 shield came along and, yes it ticks all the boxes, but it's significantly higher priced, and I wasnt willing to go there. So assuming this u9-h is roughly the same price as the x8h-plus was 2 years ago, I'm interested. Looking forward to seeing that remote review RJ. Like another guy earlier said, it's great that you are so honest about questions regarding upgrading. -KZbin, I might be wrong but I would guess there is surely an APK out there somewhere to allow 4k streams... Possibly the same with Netflix.. -HDR, last thing. HDR branding on the box, which apps support this?

I recorded last night 2 videos 1 for the A3 remote and 1 regarding the U1 VS U9-H and my thoughts on it where they stand and etc (interesting video i believe for android boxes fans like my self hehe) (Hope i can edit them today after work :) ) I didnt find one for 4K but i believe that everything is available nowadays, just a matter of looking HDR 10 Bit its difficult to sell, for me personally i dont own a 4K TV with HDR, and like me there are millions of people. Great to see it implemented but long time to actually see it in action :) - Not even talking about the aps hehe
