Minn Kota Trolling Motor Tear Down

Demonstrate Minn Kota Terrova 55 motor inspection and seal replacement after warranty has expired. It may become necessary to replace the seals on your Minn Kota motor if it begins to run rough due to water leaks. In this video we demonstrate how to install a factory seal replacement kit when you don't have an authorized dealer available to perform repairs. This could void any existing warranties that may apply to your trolling motor. Other models may differ from this video.

That paper washer is used to hold the brushes in place for reassembly. When you put the armature back in place it gets pushed back in and out of the way. Makes it super easy to do

Hi David and Double-T, after commenting below I went out to inspect my brush cap with with a decent light and found that paper/cardboard washer you mentioned. It was a bit flabby and bent, but I got it to work. The brush springs can be hooked back (released) to let the cardboard ring between them. Then re-engage the springs to clamp the paper ring. This then slips easily over the bearing and commutator. Like you said, it gets pushed out of the way by the commutator and all works well now for me. Double-T's video is the only one I can find on the MK with the shaft fixed to the armature housing and removable brush cap with fin. So this video and your comment got me over the line. Thanks!!😀😀

The paper washer is used to hold the brushes back. as you push the armateur in, the bearing lines up and the close fit armature pushes the paper gasket out of the way and allows the brushes to drop into position? Dead easy!

Thanks!! I discovered a crack in one of the magnets I didn’t put in the video. Got a new motor/shaft assembly ordered. I really abused that motor, hopefully I get much service out of the new one. Not in love with minn Kota but the replacement parts are readily available and reasonably priced. Have a great day!!

Does it still make that clicking noise a year later or did it go away after the brushes re-seated to the front of the armature?

Came to find out I had a cracked magnet which finally came loose, I had to buy a new motor / shaft for $500. They got it to me pretty quick.

i just bought one of these. did you say we should select 2d as non chirp?

The problem I made was not selecting the proper transducer in my sonar unit. Instead of having my transducer selected to “auto” I had it locked into a GT54 which is a 500w transducer. I think the minn Kota is 350w, it made a huge mess. I’m not positive that’s what caused it but I definitely had the wrong transducer selected. Thanks for watching, have a great day!!

What are your thoughts Terova vs Garmin Force I trying to decide between them. Also can you give a short video on how to rig the Garmin 93sv to the Terova THANKS

I would love to have a Garmin force with brushless motor, they are much smoother and less noisy but for my small boat they don’t make a 12v model, I’m cramped for space in the battery compartment and on the deck so the larger Garmin force just doesn’t make sense. With that said it would be really nice to connect the 93sv with the force trolling motor. Currently the terrova will only communicate with a hummingbird sonar unit. Did that answer your question? a little off topic but what length shaft is that? I'm in the market for a new motor and I have the same boat. I was thinking 54" would be to much and in the way all the time. otherwise, good video

Hopefully it’s just the prop, I had to replace my motor once because one of the internal magnets broke in two pieces. It was a grinding noise. You can loosen the two long bolts a little and rotate the cap a few degrees both ways while it’s running without the prop and see if that helps then tighten it back down
