I love your halibut videos, boys! My Father-In-Law (who has since gone on to be with the Lord) brought salmon and halibut back from an Alaska trip and I don't know if it was the way he cooked it or whatever but it was the best fish I ever stuffed into my face.

The collars make great fish stock or chowder. Sweat some celery, onion and garlic in butter. Add the collars and water. Season with salt and pepper and then simmer till the meat comes off the bone. Add some fresh chopped parsley and potatoes and cook till the taters are tender. Enjoy! The soup lends itself to the stronger flavor of the collars.

Look up the annual bycatch from the commercial fleet. It's tons of dead fish being dumped back.

@@duckwacker8720 and if thats the case, they need to do something about that. Thats frankly a waste they could at least donate it to local stores and such.

The fish are big because of their genetics, as seen in the record differences between Alaska (459 lbs.) And the californian record which i do not know off of the top of my head. The charter captains are only allowed two a day (4 in possessio), one under 28 and one of any size. Likewise, self guided boats can have two of any size and 4 in posession. The comercial longliners generally fish in areas way farther out and way deeper than the charter companies or privage owned boats.
@The-Arctic-Circle11 ай бұрын
@@DrewsfishingtripsBycatch means fish other than halibut being thrown back. This is sadly the case, but most of the fish they throw back have little to no market value. Or the harvest of such species is illegal. In the case of it being illegal, they are required by law to not retain it as part of their catch. The fish they throw back, however harmful and bad for the environment, are still consumed by other creatures and in turn, feed the halibut.

Some advice from a local… Throw back anything over 30-35 lbs. One reason is the flavor is best in the younger halibut. You’ll notice a definite difference in texture and flavor as the fish gets bigger. Large halibut are simply gross to eat because they are flavorless. Another reason is how much fish you get. A 30lb fish will give you plenty of fillets for the freezer. Two that size and you’ll have halibut in your freezer so long you won’t want to eat it. Beyond that is the impact on the fishery. Large halibut are our breeders. They produce millions of baby halibut every year. Take a picture as it’s next to the boat and release it.
@NorthweSteelheadJunkies7 ай бұрын
Absolutely 💯 % NOT true, halibut up to 120# have great flavor just the filets are bigger. The specific body condition of the fish had not to do with the flavor. Only really small halibut have a diffent flavor.

I caught a halibut bigger than that or around the same size, I jig alone sometimes and it took me like 5 or more mins to put it up to the surface and I was freaking out because it was big and I was always told to bring a gun but I didn’t expect to catch a barn door and all I had was a gaff and fought it while it was shaking then it was in my boat and it was flipping out so I was not going near it until it calmed down, I’m not trying to get a broken ankle or leg so I just kept stabbing the mf in the head until it was dead and I was exhausted I tried a couple more but I think there was whales so I just left back home

Awesome video, but I really don't understand this captain's desire to shoot every fish. Usually this is reserved for much larger fish that would be left in the water to bleed. No point of shooting it, pissing it off and bringing it all pissed off onboard... Defeats the purpose of shooting it and introduces a very real hazard on the vessel of having a live gun alongside with dealing with a pissed off fish... Just my 2 cents as someone who's been fishing Alaskan water for 20 years and never had to shoot one yet.

Aloha, and clicks. We used to harpoon them, bonk them boatside, gill them, then bring them into the boat. Had one captain who used a bang stick .
@Mo_Taser Жыл бұрын
@@adamyoung480 Aloha. 👍 I assume you're referring to larger fish because none of that needs to be done with the smaller fish. With the larger halibut a modified .410 loaded with #7.5 shot works well. You know some of those pellets are going to find the brain. A handgun is a poor solution. Halibut have such small brains that it's unlikely you'll hit a moving fish in the brain with a single bullet. Besides, yeah, I'll admit it. I don't like even seeing animals with small brains suffer. Get the job done right the first time. Harpoons, yes, I've seen that but never used one myself. Bang stick, nope. 😄 My largest halibut was a 101 pounder northeast of Port Hardy at a place called Shelter Pass. My second largest was a 77 pounder taken in the same spot literally minutes after I landed the 101 pounder. Nothing truly massive, but not bad. Both were brought under control with one shot from a .410. Cheers. 👍
@adamyoung480 Жыл бұрын
@@Mo_Taser Aloha, I’ve never used a firearm on a fish. I never harvested the big ones. They’re the breeders and the meat is not as good. That was just me. But I did have a captain once who used to use a .38 bang stick for larger ones. Sometimes I think it was for tips. He was a Highliner and my boss, so who was I to argue? But yeah, there was no other reason to shoot fish of that size in the video other than views.
