Don't forget the main difference. Minneapolis streets were designed using the grid system. St. Paul streets were designed using a bottle of whiskey.

St. Paul is the last city of the east. Whereas, Minneapolis is the first city in the West. If you think of it this way it really does explain a lot of the differences in older architecture, city planning (grid vs non grid system), even cultural and religious traditions with St. Paul being old money, traditional “east egg” and catholic and Minneapolis being more “west egg,” new aged, and Protestant.

If Minneapolis and St. Paul had a contest to see who is better, Minneapolis would win, but St. Paul wouldn't realize a contest is taking place. Minneapolis would be like "We're better than you." St. Paul would be like, "Oh that's great. Good for!"

When I moved here as a transplant, somebody explained it to me thus: A Minneapolis businessman might hire a lawyer in a Minneapolis firm, or a St. Paul firm; but a St. Paul businessman will only ever hire a lawyer from St. Paul. Though I do enjoy the variety, honestly, it's sort of too bad that we have two city centers so proximate to one another. The metro isn't large enough to support two vital, vibrant city centers. So what we end up with is a tepid city center, and a hollowed-out dying one.

I grew up in St Paul and rarely ventured over to Mpls. Streets are different and somewhat confusing. St Paul doesn't stop numbering houses when they get to the end of the block. So, the 300 house numbers could go on for several blocks. Mpls doesn't do that. So, there's a 300 block and a 400 block, etc. On the other hand, St Paul only has one 4th Street. While Mpls has a 4th Ave N, 4th Ave S, 4th St NE, 4th St S, 4th St SE . I'll get lost if I cross the bridge. 😐

Never been in StP, but ... Driving through Minneapolis was one of the worst experiences of my life. Half the intersections were closed and half the open roads were jackhammered. And this was in 2019. In 2023, we went into northern Minneapolis, avoiding the rest of the city. Northern Minneapolis is the working class side, ethnic minorities, elderly, etc, and historically the "violent" side of the city. Iasked around and the protests in 2020 ... actually ... were ... peaceful. By contrast, Southern Minneapolis is the yuppie, soy, mallrat, bard side of the city. That's where the arsons and looting took place.

I was born , raised in the Twin Cities and have taught in both Minneapolis and St. Paul schools. Twin Cities people are so unfriendly, cliquish, arrogant and don't want to make new friends outside of their existing circle of friends. There is no "Minnesota Nice". I call it Minnesota ICE. These people will give you directions to anywhere except their own home. We do have wonderful museums and educational institutions but you couldn't make a friend if your life depended on it. It is very sad for us, single people. They seem to "pull in the sidewalks at 10 p.m. in St. Paul. Downtown St. Paul is socially dead after the crowd leaves to go home.
