Minnesota is working real hard to become the frozen California of the north. Wait till the new taxes kick in to pay for the 40% state budget increase the Governor and the DFL rammed thru last year. Minnesota cost of living is going up real fast! Just like California and New York. There will be a lot of U-hauls leaving the state in the near future!

I moved to MN from WI 9 months ago and I’m seriously considering going back to WI. Between the rude and disrespectful people in general, disrespectful business workers, high cost of living, awful landlords, bugs, trash, and filth in the apartments, lack of access to good health care and services…..yeah, not the place for Wisconsin nice people.

Some say “cold & aloof” and “passive aggressive” - but I see that as “freedom from small talk with nosey neighbors.” I recently bought a house in Minnesota and it’s wonderful not having to interact with people unless I want to. One of my nextdoor neighbors has NEVER spoken to me. I’m like YES! Please don’t engage with me unless it’s important. 😅 ❤ (Her husband is very friendly and kind tho.)

moved myself, my wife and kids to Fargo 2 years ago from california.. now planning to move to moorhead or dilworth after this winter.. here vs cali, i will never want to live in cali again. i love the cold. i love seasons. something i never seen. it was always dry heat. couple min of rain every few months. high rent prices for the crappiest places.. getting out of an apartment into a house, felt unrealistic out there.. out here, that dream is alive and very possible to do. yard for my dogs and kids to play.. witch we have never had.. i can not wait for that time.. until then, we are in an apt. but so much cheaper then cali.. 2000/month for 2bed apt in the "jungle" what we call gang turf. bad areas. dangerous areas. horrible apartments. here im paying 680 for a lrg 2bedroom apt in a nice area. feels so good after growing up in cali, never thinking or feeling we would ever be able to find an affordable house to rent... now that feeling has changed.. its possible out this way. all with a flip of a coin.. we wanted out of cali.. it was either North dakota, heads.. or North Carolina, tails.... and so here we are.. fargo north dakota to make a future for our kids on this side of the world... i miss my mom, sister, her kids as their all still in cali.. but we needed something different. and now, i cant wait to see what we can do out here vs cali..

Was just in Minn this past Thanksgiving visiting from Southern Cali. My friend lives near lake Nakomis. I cant help but wonder tho. Is it still dirt cheap to live in Minn or does average about the same compared to California when you factor in the maintenance. What I mean is yes Minn homes are cheaper. Cali homes are ridiculous expensive but you don't really have to do any required maintenance. Where as in Minn, you can buy a cheap home but my friend has constantly spend money and time on up keep. Has to switch out spring/snow tires, has to shut off pipes so they dont freeze, has to constantly heat his home, had to replace windows because of weather damage. etc etc etc
@MN_Best_Real_Estate
@MN_Best_Real_Estate 2 жыл бұрын
These are all excellent points! I would say it is still far less expensive in MN. Yes, you do need to heat your home, but that's only for about 5 months. If you buy a home that is energy efficient the heating and cooling costs are pretty inexpensive. When making home upgrades, it is smart to consider the long-term cost of those improvements, install vinyl windows and not wood, do aluminum siding over wood, and Use materials that can hold up against the weather. If you currently have wood on your exterior make sure there is no chipping paint as the paint, or stain acts as a barrier to the elements. Next time you're in town I am happy to show you some good and bad homes to buy!

I'm mostly from MN. LIve in Green Bay. GRB is the city most like MN. Low rents/home prices, TONS of higher paying jobs, good schools, no traffic, lowest crime in the US. GRB may have a better ratio of good jobs to housing costs, vs MN. GRB is actually a bit south of the Twin Cities, and has better winter weather: Less cold, less snow, and more sunny days. Minnesota is the best state, and their Lake Country is amazing. Green Bay may be a good choice, so include it when looking at Minnesota. Our taxes are higher than most states. But generally, our schools are better. Do your research on that, it depends on the neighborhood. Our taxes fund our schools and the roads, which are also in better condition than most states. I have friends who live in St. Paul and for an urban area, it’s pretty quiet. The suburbs will get you better city tax rates, and a lot of them are within a 30 minute drive into downtown. Depending on which city (St. P or MPLS). Find your job, then pick your suburb. There are local internet groups for interracial families, you might want to look into those groups to see what they recommend, everything from their favorite schools to hair salons.

This is a generalization. St.Paul is diverse within its own borders. Minneapolis is more cosmopolitan but has a higher crime rate. St.Paul is more family oriented. Calmer place to live. The burbs are all different. The north burbs are "How many cylinders are in your garage"? To the northwest is more Bible orientated. The west burbs are more wealthy and to the South is more what I would call normal or mainstream, hard to stereotype. To the SE is the forgotten burbs of Cottage Grove and Inver Grove Heights.

The consensus in Minnesota seems to be that Minneapolis has gotten really bad (crime) since the GF protests/riots. Everywhere other than the Twin Cities can be good, if you like the "Minnesota Nice" vibe, and don't mind six months of winter that can include long stretches of sub-zero temperatures. It's a place you should definitely visit during the winter, if you are considering moving here. The summers are opposite of the winters, and most people find the winters here very bleak.

WI is just nicer. People are nicer and you're not taxed into oblivion. In MN, I had coworkers tell me not to work overtime because after taxes it's so bad it's not even worth working. They were right. A second job or part time work would pay more. Plus they're trying to propose a 14% tax on electronics despite being in a multi year multi billion dollar surplus. This year I had 4 people try to break into my home and neighbors where I've never had anything like that in my entire life. My catalytic converter was stolen right in front of cameras at my gym even after the vin law (that did nothing) and the police didn't do anything. Minnesota is awful now.

Yeah, it’s not a downtown with a “city life”. Certainly not since George Floyd. It depends on what you’re looking for. Dancing? Bars? Live music? From my perspective, we don’t have a “city life”. We are very spread out. You find your favorite places and then you drive. My favorite college dancing place was out in the burbs. Theater? We have more per capita than anywhere except NYC. But you have to go looking, and a lot of it is out in the suburbs, spread across the metro. Gambling? You drive to the casino. I think you’re getting the idea. We have it all, but it’s not next door. Generally, I’m willing to drive an hour one way if it’s a concert, up to forty minutes for a night out. If I want to drink, we get a sober driver or take an Uber home. There is a lot here, but you have to look for it, and probably put some miles on your car.

The public school thing is really true, the funding and access to magnet schools Is honestly amazing. Being able to open-enroll at a public STEM school is the reason I didn't fall through the cracks, and have been able to succeed in an engineering career that I would never have been able to have in most other places.

The policies that turned Portland into a dump will have the same affect in Minneapolis. Already happening. All you have to do is look at the policies, ask yourself what happened to other cities which implemented such policies, and then decide if it's good or bad. But no city does that. They don't ask where else the policies have been implemented, they just do it because it has the appearance of wisdom, even if it turns out the same way every time.

I wish they would look at what’s happened in other areas when implementing new policies. Rent control in St. Paul is likely to be rolled back and is one policy that likely should not have been put in place. The idea is good, the actual bill was not.

@Crayola Scents Portland is a "dump"? Are you nuts?! LOL! 😁You're not fooling anyone by calling Portland a "dump" and purposely not being specific as to why, and just using the generic term "policies". You are spewing typical right-wing BS because you don't like Portland's liberal attitude and way of life. Their motto, "Keep It Weird", is just too much for your conservative, "tell people whom to love and what they can do with their bodies" mindset. Well..tough titties, honey! Yes, Portland has problems with homelessness and high housing prices..but NO city is perfect. Since you are so mistaken about Portland, let me tell you why it's an awesome city thousands move to every year: 1. Portland is very green and environmentally conscious with more than 279 city parks. 2. Portland has a casual & laid-back vibe and feels more relaxed than most US cities. 3. Portland has a plethora (and diversity) of job opportunities with a lot of big name businesses in town. 4. Portland is a short road trip away from so many cool places, like the Columbia Gorge (windsurfing capital of the world), Bend (the second fastest growing city in the country), the Oregon Coast, Crater Lake National Park and the Alvord desert. 5. No sales tax. Yay! 6. The Portland International Airport (PDX), which is often rated as one of the best airports in the country. 7. Summer temperatures rarely exceed 90°F and you can count on sunshine from mid-May through mid-September. 8. The food in Portland is dream-worthy and one of the reasons people are moving to Portland in droves. You can live in Portland for 10+ years and still find yourself discovering new restaurants. 9. Portland is often rated as the best beer city in America. 10. Portland is listed as one of the top 3 coffee cities in America. If that's what you call a "dump", then you have no idea what a "dump" really is..lol. 😆

@@user-md3wm7vu1f Not the guy you're replying to, but rent control is generally accepted among economists as being a bad policy. The Wikipedia article on rent control has a good summary of the literature: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rent_control_in_the_United_States#Impact TL;DR: Rent control usually has positive short-term benefits for tenants living in rent-controlled units, but in the long term results in fewer housing units and higher rents overall.

That is up $808 million from the estimate at the end of the legislative session in May. The bigger surplus still accounts for just a fraction of the $72 billion budget."
