@@nathanbrisson3888 Unless your car has already been hit & severely damaged in a collision, it is still the safest place to be to protect you against injury in a collision in conditions like this, unless you're driving something constructed before 1997. Modern cars have crumple zones, crush-resistant frames and air bags. The worst thing you can do is exit your vehicle and stand near where some 2- to 80-ton pile of steel and glass hurtling down the road at 40-55 miles per hour can veer off the road and impact your fragile human body. I used to drive a tow truck and have seen pileups like this one in Colorado where people who thought it was a good occasion for a stroll on the blacktop were carried away in pieces.

Dumbasses always try to outrun the semi's when they should be the ones leading because they are heavier (better traction) and they can see the road ahead x10 times better in a semi. Ill get people pass me all the time just to slow down 2miles in front of me once the weather gets bad again and I will end up going past them.. Then you must live in cave. Driving too fast for the conditions and following too close is the rule on most highways. Add to that not paying close attention to what the hell you are doing, are all contributing factors to these pileups. That is not to say whiteouts and slick road areas will alone not cause a crash, but I do a hell of a lot of driving on freeways every day. People drive like assholes.

You see, then you won't have to be in a position to "take our rig off the road" because you will have time to slow down. When you see footage of massive pileups, it's because drivers refuse to slow down, they wanna blast down the road showing everybody how they "ain't scared" to drive in the snow. I won't say there will never be a situation where you might not be able to avoid hitting something but what I saw on this vid and in the 28 yrs I have been doing this job, is that the majority of these types of incidents could be avoided. I am from this area. What you cannot see from this view are two critical facts. Just over the far horizon, there is a clover leaf interchange. Cars turning right have to drastically slow down to make a relatively sharp turn in bad conditions. The drastic difference in vehicle speeds is what is causing the pile up. The other factor that is not apparent in the video is that there is an overpass that crosses a rail line. That overpass is crowned and people's line of site is blocked. The cars coming into this pile up have just crossed the overpass.

Plus a fairly large candle in a coffee can, matches, medication, first aid kit, flashlight, granola bars or sealed foods, TP, full tank of gas, boots, foot liners, wool socks, heavy gloves, hat & sleeping bag. Make sure the tailpipe is cleared. Those hand warmers are great for feet and hands. Stay with your car. Do not set out walking. Stay in your car. Warm up when you absolutely must. Keep a phone charger in your car.

Google any of these crazy pile ups and you will see almost every fatality is from someone getting crushed after leaving their car. These are relatively low speed collisions where the kinetic energy is being absorbed/spread by the pile of vehicles, you're risk of being crushed inside you car is next to zero.

Sounds like Californians while driving when it rains. Still driving 80mph with a less than 2 second following distance, then they honk at you when you are driving at the speed limit or slower with a 7 second following distance. I well remember that I was driving in conditions like that once in my life and was very blessed that the truckers banded together and gradually slowed everyone down and seeing that my car was so iced up ( I could hear them on the CB but they could not hear me) they formed a protective shield around me and guided me until I could pull off into a truck stop. Hats off to all the OTR drivers out there.

Unfortunately, over the last 20 to 25 years the drivers have all become part of that me generation, very very few of them have a radio anymore but would rather depend on that cell phone to tell them what's going on and that cell phone only tells them about 1/10 of what they need to know if that much...... I just came off the road after 27 and a half years out there I've seen it they drive like maniacs and I try to stay away from them... I'd hear some of them get on the radio said I know it all I've done it all and I key up and ask where you at driver he says why I said I want to know where so I can know to stay the hell away from where you at because right now you are the most dangerous driver out here they shut up after that... And I was fortunate enough to never get caught up in anything anywhere close to this, and when I was in this kind of weather I was parked so that if anything like this showed up I didn't have to worry about it I wasn't in it

i was driving down a mountain once in conditions very similar to this (it was blizzarding but we had to get home so we could go to work the next day!). everything was fine, hunky-dory. then, a bright red pickup flew past on the left and flew past the semi i was settled in behind, lost control just as they passed, and slid right into the semi's path. i remember seeing the pickup disappear and then every light that semi had fried my eyes!! i somehow managed to slow down and watch as the semi flew off the road and sent so much snow up that the world went white. all i could think of was the now invisible pickup somewhere ahead of me, and the fact that i literally could not see farther than my windshield. after the snow cleared, i was able to see that not only had both pickup and semi made it through without flipping, but they were both completely unscathed. the fast action of the semi sending themselves off the road onto a slippery grass median probably saved my life, the semi's, and the pickup's. use. the. median.

In Europe (and most of the world tbh) using your blinkers to sign danger or bad conditions is very useful. In America however, it is a hazard, since the blinkers, directional lights ánd break lights often are the exact same red colour, making them all the more confusing on the road.

I was driving north through OKC years ago and they had just gotten a butt load of freezing rain ( a bit rare for the area) . Just north of the city there was a long, straight decline followed by a long straight incline. When I came over the crest of the hill it looked like a freaking skating rink. Cars and trucks sliding every which way, all across both Lanes, the median and the ditches. Crashes happening everywhere. I know how to drive in bad conditions...no heavy breaking or sudden changes. I aimed my car down the center of our two lanes and just tried to breathe. Car swerving right in front and behind me. Somehow or another I made it all the way through untouched. Good driving, yes, but a huge amount of just plain old luck as well.

Once upon a time, 35 years ago, I was driving an empty semi on 22x, south of Calgary at 4 in the morning and came over a hill to find a car parked in the middle of the road. Icy road with no shoulder and my choice was hit the car or take the field. I rhubarbed it. Then I hiked to the car to find it running with the driver laying across the seat. I knew that if he got away my boss would think I fell asleep at the wheel and fire me. I set out flares before the crest of the hill to warn any drivers to slow down, then I let the air out of all the tires on the car so he couldn't drive away. Then I hiked down the road a mile or so to a gas station and used the phone to call the RCMP. They showed up before the guy could get away and busted him for impaired driving. It took the rest of the day to get the rig back on the road but I kept the job. It's the only time in over 40 years of driving semi's that I had to do that, and I was very aware of keeping the angle right so I didn't roll over, but after hitting the brakes and locking everything up, I knew my only option was the field. If I'd hit that car I would have killed him. When I first started driving for a living in 1969, an old guy told me you can't call yourself a trucker till you've rolled one. I think I can call myself a trucker because I've never rolled one.

Jackie Campbell Lets play this out. Say you are driving down the road behind Kevin and you see everything as its happening, the car stopped in the road and Kevin taking the field to avoid hitting it. Now that Kevin is in the field and you are stopped there saying "Wow! What the hell just happened?? What do I do"??, and the person in the car hears all the commotion and wakes up. He looks at what he just caused, starts his car(if it wasn't running) and takes off flying down the road drunk as hell. Now, you leave after checking on the truck driver and as your ass is driving down the road, in a couple miles, you come upon the next wreck that the drunk caused and you say "Wow! What the fuck?!?! Its the same car from where the truck is and he hit someone head on! Oh my, that other car is so fucked up, you cant even tell it was a car. Nobody can be alive in there!". Then you hear screaming coming from the person in the other car, "help me, somebody please help me". Now the car catches on fire and before any fire dept can get there, the car absolutely burned to nothing, with the person still trapped inside and being burned alive, on top of all their other injuries. Of course, the drunk driver survives (like they always do). Now the fire dept, cops and ambulance roll up, get whats left of the fire out while the cops are questioning you. They find the drivers wallet in his back pocket and they hand it to the cops to identify the victim and, being curious,as I'm sure you are, you ask if they can tell you who it was. They tell you "it was a teenage boy. A Mr. Campbell from just up the road". You noticed I used YOUR last name because it was YOUR son coming home from work and that was screaming while being burned alive! And you in turn would be saying the same thing I did....."That truck driver should have killed that stupid drunk when he had the chance!! Now my son's dead!" Boo hoo😭boo hoo😭waaa waaa waaaa😭....dumbass!

My dad just made me watch this for driving advice- he said that if in a situation like that, either drive up the side as far as possible like the rightmost driver at 2:45 or just get off the road and drive as far away as possible like the car in the field at 3:45 and then call 911. There is no one "safe" speed for a condition it will vary from vehicle to vehicle and driver to driver. if you're not comfortable driving a the speed the interstate is moving you might be safer taking a county or state highway.

I was another thread and a guy (I'm betting he was young) was really defending speeding. Saying it is not speed that causes accidents/loss of life. Bad drivers cause accidents/loss of life. I responded with some examples. Manly that very minor moves can be recovered and not cause an accident but add speed, reaction time is way less, ability to recover is way less and impact is way more extreme whereas loss of life is way higher. He called me names and called me a nag and go nag my husband. Lol. I let him get to me bc I have to drive on the same road as these people. When I said hitting gravel at a normal speed you can recover. But add speed and you lose control very easy, spin flip etc. He thought I proved his point re only bad drivers would hit gravel and that proves bad drivers are to blame as he originally said. There are all kinds of unpredictable situations that can cause an accident that does not include other drivers. I am so frustrated with all this. Accidents have risen, deaths have risen. Insurance costs have risen all because of yes bad drivers or arrogant drives who think they are invincible. Am I wrong? How can anyone defend speeding. Oh and he brought up the "highway in Germany" um you mean the Autobahn lol. I had researched this long ago bc of peoples belief that speed doesnt kill and after he made these statements. 35% of all drivers in Germany drive on the Autobahn. 11% of all car accidents in Germany are on the Autobahn. Now the population is very high there but I still think this is a high number. And contrary to popular belief there is a suggested speed limit on the Autobahn (I didn't know this) but it is not a law. I don't tolerate speeding at all. Arogance and impatience does not belong on our roads and highways. How many people have to die in completely avoidable "accidents".....no it's choices.

@@rickarnold6513 The source of the cause before the others drove too fast are the drivers way down the street who had stopped in the middle of the street. If they never stopped, than this would have never happened. They'd still be driving without any wrecks to begin with. So all of that could have been prevented if the drivers were still driving in the very front. But, the speeding is the second cause. The third cause is the drivers decided to drive in the fog instead of staying home until it all cleared away. Their decision to drive in the first place, caused themselves to get in this situation.

I drive a LOT of miles each year - in the midwest, especially. I can't even count the number of pileups like these that I've witnessed first-hand. Thankfully (knock on wood) I've always managed to avoid collision or contact. One thing that is consistent in almost every case is a civilian driver who - instead of slowing down - tries to take another lane last minute. It always - always - accelerates the issue. Just slow the hell down, pay attention, and be prepared to stop. Period!

@@M.C.G. Two WEEKS ago, I was driving in conditions very similar to this. The right lane was relatively clear, and the left lane was snow covered. A white Corvette was behind me, and traffic was moving about 45-50 mph. The Corvette decided to pass me on the left - in the fresh snow. The driver sped up to about 60-65 mph, and a truck decided to follow his lead. It was almost 6:00 pm, so light was low, but I could still see - plainly - with the naked eye. After the Corvette and truck passed me, I saw the Corvette trying - desperately - to get back into the right lane. He tried multiple times, and then just went for it, as the pickup truck was right on his ass. The Corvette swerved back-and-forth, like a fish, and then went BACKWARDS into the ditch to the right. The truck behind him lost control, and went into the median between the east and west highways. Both vehicles became incapacitated. Yeah - it sounds easy, because it IS easy.! Slow the fuck down. 45 miles in ONE hour beats the shit out of ZERO miles in 6 hours.
