NONE of the main dam structure has failed. The gates were fully open and have been for years, the dam would of had no issue passing sufficient water had it not been allowed to clog up with debris, yes easier said than done.

Operators of the dam, knowing how the tree trash would create a problem, should have brought in cranes or whatever to promptly remove it before it caused a problem. Whose job was it to operate the dam and why did they let this happen?
@nicotti

@@76MUTiger The county called the people that clear the debris before the bank failed. Those people said the equipment was 5 hours away and they weren't confident that it was safe for their personnel to be on the dam nor clear the debris given the extremely high current/river level. If the debris removal crew got washed off the dam and drowned, I bet you'd be demanding to know who let them work in such dangerous conditions. :-P

The Build Back Better is nothing but just air consumption of ink. US politicians love to talk big and sweet but nothing gets done. They want to put up a good show to pretend they are doing something. In reality, they all work for the same masters = their big donors or corporations, lobbyists, and military-industrial complex. They will only come together wherever there are proxy wars to be fought. It is a privately built dam that was bought from the original owners 50 years ago by Blue Earth county. The lack of reinvestment is typical of private hydro electric. Local government has had ages to prioritize reinvestment, but local voters probably just wanted cheaper gas and lower taxes. I grew up in a town in British Columbia that also owns a private hydro electric plant. The town and tax payers have prioritized its maintenance and upkeep even longer than Rapidan, since 1892. Don't blame the federal government, blame the local owners.

The engineer said yesterday during the press conference that the reservoir is fully silted in and since 2019 the dam's gates had all been raised so any water that comes downstream flows thru it (ie no lake behind it to create a significant wall of water). He said the catastrophe would be ecological as a giant amount of silt would be flushed downstream... which seems to be happening anyway the further down the water cuts.

The elephant in the room is allowing debris to clog the dam
@xximortalghostxx
@xximortalghostxx 3 ай бұрын
I think the bigger elephant in the room is that the “partial breach” is a hole larger then the dam itself. So yes the dam is still there, but there is a hole 2x the size of the dam which will cause it completely drain

I forget that a lot of people reporting on this event weren't even born in 1993 and 1995 when the Mississippi flooded Illinois and Missouri along with other states up and down the river, but I lived in St. Louis at the time so I know that event well. In 1993 they claimed it was a 100 year flood. Then 1995 happened and 1993 became a 500 year flood and 1995 became the 100 year flood. Entire towns have been relocated to higher ground, houses were wiped out, houses that were flooded were abandoned and left because the insurance companies and the Feds told people that they could not return and build in those locations, levees breeched and the river took back part of its original channel (it had been diverted at some point in the past).

The head of water above the dam appears to be about the same as it is below, so even if the dam fails, it now appears it would have little impact on the people downstream - unless they get a lot more rain.
@SnowmanTF2
@SnowmanTF2 3 ай бұрын
The water level past the dam is not visible in this shot, if it even would be plausibly seen from where the camera is, then it is entirely obstructed by the reporter. What you see is the water flowing around the dam, which is going down a hill. Granted at max it was only a couple stories difference, and report by sheriff basically stated there was not much risk of flooding of nearby cities, though there was some concerns on effects debris might have on bridges.
@crabbyhayes1076
@crabbyhayes1076 3 ай бұрын
@@SnowmanTF2 My point was that the dam wall visible above the water has increased - indicating reduced chance of dam failure. And since a whole lot of river is bypassing the dam already, it sure seems to me (as mentioned by the authorities) that even if the dam were to fail, it would probably have little impact on the water level downstream.

I don't know much about thos but it seems like destroying the old dam would allow less pressure on the bank opposite and possibly prevent just watching peoples' land just keep eroding away. Wider opening and less rapid water washing against other side ?
