I just want to remind everyone who was saying "trade back and pick up Penix in round 2" or "trade back, there's always a QB who falls" that it wasn't true this year. Kwesi getting JJ at #10 without giving away any 1st rounders was awesome. The Raiders stuck at #13 and all 6 quarterbacks were gone. Just because there is usually a guy who falls, doesn't mean there's always a guy who falls.

I watched the 18 minute video in the Vikings draft room. I know things can be edited, but it really seemed like top to bottom we got our guys. Save for maybe wanting Drake Maye more than JJ McCarthy. Every other pick seems to be the guy we were targeting. Knowing that this better be a GREAT draft. If it’s anything other than great Kwesi doesn’t know what he’s doing. All that to say I believe this will be a great draft.

I agree, but they probably had other guys in mind for picks like 129 and 157 that they ad to give up. I'm also curious to see what their reaction was at pick 8. Were they disappointed, or relieved when the Falcons took Penix. Personally, I was thrilled that the Falcons took Penix.

I have the gut feeling like I did when I called JJettas at the draft, and Addison at the draft. I totally disagree with this notion that Kwesi has learnt from mistakes in the 2022 draft. I'd argue that Kwesi and KOC ave had an integrated strategy from day 1 about how they would/could use the draft and FA over the last 3 years to refresh the roster. Kwesi inherited a negative salary cap with a number of aging players on bloated contracts. He had to try and draft volume in 2022 to infuse some youth and speed into the roster, because he couldn't buy it in via FA. He spent 2022 and 2023 exiting the bad contracts, and adding some high value low cost FAs. Kwesi was unlucky to have injuries de-rail the progression of Cine, Booth and Asamoah - so we didn't see the contributions from them that Kwesi and KOC were hoping for. Kwesi had engineered enough cap space leading into this offseason to flip FA to provide the foundation and use his draft picks on specific high ceiling players. I'd argue that this was his plan all along. In fact I remember posting comments in 2022 suggesting that Kwesi would likely try and replace Kirk and Hunter in the 2024 draft, because it would be their earliest opportunity to get out of those contracts, and potentially have the roster stable enough to use future picks to trade up for a QB. I'd argue that if Kwesi had not been able to sign Greenard, AVG, Cashman, Griffin etc in FA - he would have traded back for more picks to try and build that foundation through the draft - nothing to do with "learning from is mistakes" at all. If the coaches gave up on players as quickly as fans the Vikes would have cut Metellus two years ago. Give up on Cine, Booth and Asamoah at your own risk.

The bigger difference between 2022 and 2024 is that 2022's draft class was really weak, so it made sense to say "All of these guys are a coin flip, let's get as many as we can". The talent in the 2024 draft was a lot younger and better defined. Add in the increased experience in the role and the comfort with the roster and coaching, and it feels more like a difference in situation than a difference in strategy or attitude or philosophy. Kwesi's still going to be open to trading back if it makes sense in future drafts.

Kirk signed his 1 year extension AFTER free agency opened in 2023. Due to rules of the NFL CBA, he isn't allowed to sign another contract with the Vikings for MORE money, within 365 days of his last signing. This GUARANTEED he would hit free agency, one year prior to doing so. Kirk, KoC, and Kwesi knew these rules when they agreed to it. Not sure how you guys continue to miss us screaming it in the comments.

I still believe that PENIX is who KOC really wanted, although he was willing to settle for McCarthy. When he talked with Pat McAfee about accuracy being the most important thing and McAfee said "so you want Penix then?" KOCs face said it all. Also, when the Falcons took Penix, the look on several faces in the room were more than just shock. The Drake Maye "interest" was a Vikings smokescreen to keep him from falling and to allow Penix to fall in their lap. Atlanta spoiled the plans, but like I said, they were prepared to roll with their second option in case of an unexpected event.
