I agree. We know making the playoffs isn’t going to happen unless Sam reinvents himself, which I’m not against. More than likely we won’t, so “experimenting” and assessing where we are as a team, heading into next season, we’ll know what we have and where we’re at…

The best and most informed prognosis I've heard about McCarthy. I think the Vikes are trying to set McCarthy up as the franchise QB for the next decade - so their objective is probably to get him to a place where when he takes over, he takes over for good - not getting him on the field asap. Darnold has ever advantage that JJ has, plus 6 years experience in the league.

I 100% guarantee that at some point this season, there will be a "JJ JJ JJ " chant from the crowd if Sam Darnold is having a bad game..I just hope KOC doesn't cave if he knows he isn't ready.. cause if JJ came in and didn't play well, vike fans can turn so pessimistic on a dime.. @Mic-Purple-Husker agreed.. that's why unless JJ completely out preforms every other qb on the roster, I'm absolutely fine with him sitting for the full season if it means he'll be better set for the 2025 season.. I’m all for staying patient which is why I wanted them to extend cousins a year.before he signed with ATL when he was offering a market discount. Everyone is clowning on ATL for signing cousins and drafting a QB at 8…guess wha? now they can be patient with their young qb.…the Vikings are more likely to have to force JJ in before he’s ready because of the situation they’ve put themselves in at QB. Say all you want about playing these other QBs if darnold gets hurt or can’t play…if JJ is making $35M a year with Hock making top TE money they aren’t going to roll with Jaren hall. I hope it works out but if it does they are lucky..the smart play would have been to extend cousins a year before he became a FA and draft the qb..which is what Atlanta did.

Does any "reasonable" person believe there aren't going to be growing pains with McCarthy? He's going to have his ups and down, and that's just the way it's going to be. The key here is progression. How is JJ responding to coaching and how well/quickly is he picking things up. If I wanted to go back 40 years I could find so many write ups about HOF QB's in their first camp having bad days. Heck, vets have bad practices. Everything we're hearing with JJ is that there is good and bad, and that's normal. So far, so good from what I can tell.

As for JJM being in the run offence of Michigan, yes not as many opportunities for him to learn passing situations/workload.... i would say the way he handled it was very good at highest level. Execute , focus and when called to pass execute focus.....hes more willing to be flexible and take direction and excel. He could have bellyached , screw u do his own things at times....doesnt seem his style. Hes more ready for the NFL in someways, doesnt need to scramble out of the pocket at the slightest show of pressure. Your Fields, Allen, Murray Once he grasps the nuances of NFL he will be a well rounded QB who has mobility. Develop his throwing skills equally past the Fastball I may get antsy but im prepared till next year if thats when he sees the field

Way i see it you have 2 main QB out of 4 , OTAs and into camp the 1st & 3rd QB on different sides of the field get the reps, perfect Both Sam and JJM need the work and process to learn/absorb playbook/ show where they are strong and weak at plus where they have progressed since their last stint( SD MIGHT be more of history reference from 2-5 years) As joint camps go and preseason will show progression and retention for both....its too hard to see where it is at this time..... better idea when they get shared practices against other teams 1s seeing how they stack up( JJM Might not get quantity of time in that situation)

Darnold had an amazing sophomore year at USC (I watched all his games), but his junior year he was forcing things and wasn't as good. Similar to Caleb, but Williams was/is far more talented. I wasn't that high on Sam coming out because his play had regressed in college. How much do I put on Sam vs. situation in the NFL. I'd put 75% of it on Darnold. Players may have lesser situations than others, but these are still NFL level coaches and a player owns his own tape. Could Sam "flourish" under KOC. Possibly, but I think that ceiling is 20th-21st best QB. Good enough to start for a team, but not nearly good enough to take them anywhere. Great guy, and I think he's the right "fit" for this situation.

The Jets fired him and the next year he was a Tight ends coach in college. Folks think they know everything about Sam and understand him to a cellular level. You spent a number 10 pick on JJ. I truly think this team is going to really struggle this year. It's a given this team will have a top 10 pick in the draft in 2025. Every team needs 2 QB's on the roster. It should not be a given that JJ is the future for the next 5 years. If Sanders is there for us at our pick the Vikings should do the right thing and draft him. It's only one year of working with JJ and bringing Sanders on will give us the best shot at getting a true future QB. It's a nice story to see how pumped JJ is to be on this team. The reality is he was basically the 4th option at finding a QB going into the future and the Vikings owe him nothing in terms of bringing in competition. If it takes 2 years to get your guy, that's not a bad situation going into the future.

I doubt they will be picking top 10. They won 7 games with an uneven Cousins, then Dobbs/Hall and Mullens. Darnold might not even be inferior to Cousins. Darnold has a good arm, and anything he lacks in accuracy, should be mitigated by his rushing ability, and movement in the pocket. For the first time in 6 years the O Line won't be protecting a statue.
@jooglebob
@jooglebob 28 күн бұрын
If Darnold was that good, he would be like Matt Stafford for the Lions, he would still be in New York. He is certainly not a top 3 prospect in the past 10 years, hell he went #3 in his own class! He is getting severely overrated. 1st round busts would be turning into great players all the time if it were true that being in a bad situation was 90% of their problem, and yet the vast majority of 1st round busts do not turn their career around given a second chance. Or a third chance. Or on their fourth team like Darnold.
@robe2504
@robe2504 28 күн бұрын
No one is saying Darnold is Mahomes, but Shanahan and KOC have both recognised that he has value. He had no shot with the Jets, and you can continue to live in that paradigm, but also remember that Kirk Cousins started his career 1-0, 1-4, 0-3 7-9 as well. Also consider that Baker started 1-6 for the Panthers in 2022, before being picked up by the Bucs and beating a full strength Vikes including Kirk & Jettas at US Bank on the way to the playoffs last season. Darnold finished the 2022 season for the Panthers, inheriting a 3-8 team after CMC was traded, and went 4-2. Darnold had the 2022 Bucs on the ropes in Tampa leading by 14 until the Panthers D conceded 200 yards and 3 TDs to Brady and Evans in an unlikely comeback that ultimately cost the Panthers the division title. Darnold can play a bit better than some folks suggest.
@jooglebob
@jooglebob 28 күн бұрын
@@robe2504 Actually I am in the midst of debating someone on a forum who is arguing Darnold is a better QB than Lamar Jackson, and the commenter in this episode called Darnold a top 3 QB prospect from the past 10 years which simply isn’t true. You make some good points but that 4-2 run with the Panthers stemmed from running the ball 36 times per game compared to throwing it about 23 times. He was very efficient (y/a) but still not accurate and by QBR and PFF rating in the 60-70th percentile of QBs. I don’t see the Mayfield comparison. Baker had multiple full quality seasons as a baseline compared to Sam’s 6 game stretch that amounted to 117 passes or so. There isn’t a track record of players at any position playing this poorly and becoming drastically better because of their environment. Mariota, Trubisky, Winston, Bortles, Rosen ad the like would be turning things around if it were as likely as some claim.
@robe2504
@robe2504 27 күн бұрын
@@jooglebob I'm not arguing that he's a superstar, but that his situations make him look worse than he potentially is. Yes, he didn't throw it much in those games, but DJ Moore was the only guy on the roster that could get open, and even then he had to make some great throws into small windows. That is also the same argument that many people also make for McCarthy. One of my arguments is that most of the things say about McCarthy are also true for Darnold. And it was not just the last 6 games of 2022, but also the first 6 or 7 of 2021. He won the first 3, then hit the Cowboys in Dallas losing by one score in a 40 point shoot out, then lost in the last minute to the Hurts led Eagles, and almost pulled off a great comeback against the Vikings. That was the 98 yard drive and 2 point conversion after the 2 minute warning. These were all good performances, not flawless, but definitely comparable with what Cousins regularly dished up with the Vikes. I'd argue that Darnold just had an inferior roster and coaching at the Panthers. I've watched all of those games and I saw a guy that can throw at least as well as Mullens, and runs at least as well as Dobbs. He also had a couple of very efficient outings for the 49ers, and arguably looked as good as Purdy. If you remember back to the 49ers training camp there was reporting that Shanahan was impressed with Darnold and he was putting pressure on Purdy. I just think many folks are locked in on the Jets days and are really underestimating him, and what he could do with KOCs play calling and the Vikes elite weapons. Skol!

These takes about McCarthy on PD have been absolutely terrible. Guy is looking the best so far of any of the rookie QBs and Mackey, Judd, etc. have been wringing their hands and wanting to coddle him like he is some fragile porcelain doll. They would rather throw away the season with a journeyman backup that turns the ball over and crumbles under pressure than find out if McCarthy will be as great as many of us think he will become. Coller on Purple Insider, who was almost unwatchtable pre-draft with his man crush on inferior NFL QB prospect Maye and inability to objectively analyze McCarthy because of it, has come around and is now the voice of reason and sanity on Darnold and McCarthy. He recognizes the simple truths that it is highly improbable that Darnold becomes more than he has proven to be already and that McCarthy looks really promising for a rookie off of his first week of OTAs. Mackey seems intent on trolling his own fanbase and tearing PD down while Judd is afraid of his own shadow and terrified about giving McCarthy his opportunity to excel. It has been an almost 180 degree shift since the draft. Are the PD crew just changing their format to become click bait and scream their bad takes from the mountaintops? There are plenty of shows for that already. Missing the more measured and consistent opinions from the past.

They've said repeatedly they want McCarthy to start when the coaching staff thinks he's ready to. If he needs a redshirt season it's best for him and the team long-term. If he shows he's ready week 1 he will start.
@intrepidfool
@intrepidfool 28 күн бұрын
@@edward_kenway532gaming3Not really, though. They say start when ready but then act like he is a year away. From all accounts, he is ahead of Willams, Daniels, Nix, Penix, and certainly Maye. Yet they act like redshirting him just because will somehow be good for him. There is zero evidence to support this take. Some QBs start early and succeed, some fail. Some start late and succeed, some fail. There is no time machine to look at 50 QBs starting or not and track how that individual’s play would differ. Some guys just have the ability to play at the next level and some don’t. Mahomes would have been elite no matter what. Darnold would have failed no matter what. If the Jets had drafted Mahomes, Gase or whomever would still have a job and being talked about as a future HOF HC. McCarthy will have the playbook and offense down during training camp. The minor footwork and other adjustments that every rookie QB (and every QB going to a new offensive system) need to make are almost insignificant and won’t be an issue. (He doesn’t need an overhaul like Maye, just minor tweaks for their specific choices around timing. And every rookie QB will improve over time with accuracy, touch, and mechanics but there are no glaring deficiencies in McCarthy’s game that prevent him from starting right away.) If he can get the ball out on time to the correct read, he should start. His history shows that he will be successful and he has looked the part so far in training camp. Darnold is a journeyman backup that sees ghosts and turns the ball over. He isn’t the answer. Unless KOC and KAM are supremely confident that a 6 win lost season with Darnold won’t get them fired, McCarthy starts.

@@edward_kenway532gaming3They are falling into the modern zero accountability bullshit where everyone is a victim. Was Darnold a victim of his coaches? You could as easily claim that the coaches were a victim of Darnold? How about instead just that the coaches and Darnold were all bad? Let them be responsible for their own failures? Giving QBs credit for success but blaming their failure on others is some crazy spin. Darnold simply isn’t a good NFL QB in the games as he cannot handle pressure. Time to find out if JJ is wired for success like I think he is. If he fails, he isn’t good enough. Period. No amount of hand holding or fear based hesitation will change that. You take let the guy take his shot and hope he is the next superstar.

@@joshuawilliams2447 Ok. The opposite of trash is not the QBOTF. That is a stupid argument, which seems to be on brand. Purdy was the starting QB when the Niners signed Sam, not Jimmy G, and Shanahan moved on from Trey Lance (and the three 1st round picks) in order to keep Darnold. Darnold played very efficiently in his two appearances for the Niners. You might try watching those games before running your mouth, and letting everyone know that you haven't watched Darnold since 2019. I think that Shanahan and KOC probably know a bit more about QBs than you do, and I'd bet Shanahan wished that the Niners had enough cap space to keep him this season. KOC was able to win games with Dobbs, Mullens, and Cousins. I think he'll be able to win plenty with Darnold.

Judd on Darnold: Well, he came into a really bad situation in the Jets. Patient? All I heard from Phil and Judd for YEARS was Kirk Cousins was the one player STOPPING the Vikes from winning a super bowl. His "Salary" was prohibiting the team from building a quality roster, they said. Well, Kirk is gone. Kirk's salary is gone. Nothing stopping them now. For YEARS Phil and Judd preached the team needed a "Franchise QB on a rookie pay scale" Well, ya got that too. I said "If paying Kirk 35 million per was prohibitive to assembling a team, then paying JJ $35 million would also be prohibitive. Sam Darnold was pretty decent at the Panthers - he went 8-9 over 2 seasons with that roster, 4-2 in 2022 after they had traded CMC. If he can do that with the Panthers, I could easily see him winning 10+ games with the Vikes playcalling and roster. He can zip the ball pretty well too. Have a look at some of the balls he fired into DJ Moore.
