I remember the exact day she passed. It was a sunny day, 87 degress on July 12, 1979, Chicago. Bruh, I was walking to my cousins house with my radio at the time, but I could not see where I was walking because of the instant flood of tears from Breaking News, man. That's when D.J. La Donna Tittle, from WJPC radio, announced it. It rocked me. Btw, Maya really looks like her mom.......EVERYONE was so proud of her, being from Chicago, doing so well. She came to my high school and the band went crazy! They played her latest music and she broke down crying. She said that she didn't know about the impact that she had on the youth. Thanks to those that posted this whole video...I have never heard so much of her spoken voice in this fashion, with so many clips, EVER! T.y. for that.

@patriciabove7652 Can I make a statement here and also ask a question at the end? If you notice, the ages of those responding so far were between 13 and 17, at the time and I bet ALL of us had plenty of time to rave over the Jackson 5, the Sylvers and novel groups like 21st Century who made "Do You Remember the Rain" > kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJ-aY6ualLKeg9Usi=YYcqcnIN_RvfjeFa , but we clearly remember Minnie Riperton. I don't know if it was because of our parents, back then, or if we just stumbled upon hwr music on our own, SHE'S embedded in our hearts. As young as we were then, we *loved* her as if she were in our own family. It proves that she was a star and had "draw-power." However the difference between music then and now is singers weren't ashamed to sing about *love* , *commitment* , *dedication* , or ashamed about being vulnerable around each other.....TODAY, Ha! You can tell I'm long-winded... Don't make me go there. Fill in the blanks... Nutshell: "we" were young, very young then, but we were smitten with, not only her angelic voice, but I bet each one of us understood the lyrics of her songs, and grooved to the accompanying music too. So, the question is: Can you name 3 songs, that she made, that you consider her classics? My answer is: 1. Here We Go Again ( with both Peabo Bryson and Roberta Flack) 2. Memory Lane 3. Loving You

I have great respect for this lady. Maintaining a career with that unmatched voice while battling racism and the controversies of interracial marriage with biracial kids and a 3 year struggle with cancer. She was truly one of the great ones of music
@Flightdevildoc12 күн бұрын
She is indeed a legend. It is sad that her interracial marriage was troublesome for some whites and blacks, yes, she got it from sides of the spectrum. However, despite this, her love to her family and music, kept her going. What an angelical voice, clean and beautiful music. Greatly appreciate this video.

@jazzmanchgo4 күн бұрын
She was also battling health problems -- Cash McCall, who played guitar in her band during the time before "Loving You" hit (that's him on her legendary 1974 "In Concert" appearance), said that even then, after a show, she'd go back into the dressing room and collapse. When someone asked her how she was doing, she just said, "I'm hanging in there! I'm hanging in there!" Looking back, it was probably the early stages of the cancer that eventually took her from us, but she didn't actually get diagnosed until several years after that. But she was not feeling well, even that early.

I love/ed her contribution to the so-called, Black American talent. She is forever remembered by me. And as for Denise Williams and Maria Carey. My arrangement is yet Minnie, Denise and then Maria. Minnie just naturally knew how to carry the notes to blend and flow. Denise and Maria know how to sing but Minnie knew how blend and flow. If you know, you know. Thanks for sharing. 🥰
