Some fish are just too small to easily catch on rod and line. None the less, medium to small sized predators are still more than happy to feed on them, minnows being a prime example. So it goes without saying that these fish would make great live baits. Here we demonstrate a quick and easy way of catching small fish live baits. In fact, it costs nothing and can be made in less time than it takes to read this explanation.

I've been making traps like these for many years to catch baiters for perch fishing in the UK. Mine had several holes melted into them, a weight attached, and a short length of twine to swing it into the shallows further out.

Nice idea, you can also use a 2 Ltr bottle the same way. use some thumb tacks to hold the funnel top in place (you can easily remove them to collect the fish). Also weight it down or like others say tie a string to it and place a stake on the shore with it tied to it (allows easy retrieval of the minnow trap).

I learned this from a French boy at a campsite- we put breadcrust into an old wine bottle, and caught plenty of minnows- we released them afterwards, it was just fun to catch them [we were kids, and in those days, kids did things like catch minnows- now it is all internet games!

Yup :D i covered them with sauce though. we did the fishing. with the bottle techniquie. but the bottles was big ones. those two liter ones. and we heated a piece from a clothes hanger then poked holes at the bottom. we did that because we caught a bunch under a little waterfall.

A small caution - I put in bacon, and the oils from the bacon apparently poisoned the water & killed the fish. So I cut off the bottom of the plastic bottle & used a fine net to cover the bottom. Not a great fix, as the water drains out when you lift up the trap, but at least the fish in the trap were still alive.

Unfortunately, mosquito fish (the type of minnows in this video) are not very good bait. It seems a lot of the bigger panfish avoid these smaller, quicker minnows, in favor of the larger more sluggish crappie minnows.
