I have a Dynax 4, which is quite similar and has that mediocre 28-80mm kit lens. I quite often use it with the older 35-70mm f4 which is from the era of the Dynax 500si, and this lens is far superior. I found your channel through your post on the Talk Photography forum. Good stuff!

Hello theoldunshot1005, Thank you for your comments and insights into the Minolta range. I think there are a few people on TP who also YT. I have watched some of your videos as well. I think we seem to be on a similar journey to help people get the most from these old cameras. Good luck and all the best MVC

Good effort on the review. I bought one of these, new, back in 1999, it was my first SLR and I cut my teeth on it before getting a beautiful fully manual Nikon FE. Unfortunately it was at that watershed moment between analogue and digital, and I ended up getting a D70 in 2004 which I still use as my main tool today, and both my analogue cameras ended up languishing in a cupboard for two decades. But I've just signed up for a b&w developing course this summer, so thanks to your video, I'm dusting off my Dynax and I'll be taking it round the Pyrenees for some landscape work next week. Cheers!

Hi, I always thought that SLR cameras metered through the lens [ I have a Tamron 28-105 lens ] but today I decided on a 400 ISO unknown Chinese B&W film of unknown expiry date, I set the ISO to 200 to compensate. With B&W I like to use appropriate filters, there was a Skylight filter fitted to the lens which I removed, I checked the shutter speed and aperture settings in the viewfinder, then fitted the red filter, strangely the readout did not change, I expected the aperture or shutter speed [ or both ] to reduce to compensate for the "filter factor" of the red filter, it did not. Am I missing something?? I have three 404si cameras [ they were dirt cheap ] and one of them has the viewfinder discolouration you mentioned, and like you I do not see any degregation in the picture quality, as for it affecting the auto focus I hadn't noticed any problem. Your review was excellent, like most people I hardly ever read a manual of any kind 🙃😜😎😵💫 cheers. Thanks for your time and effort.

Reminds me of the Pentax MZ50

I’ve handled both. Pentax handles wayyyy nicer. imo the Minolta’s control dial is hard to use compared to the switch control of the Pentax. The way that the Minolta toggles AF/MF doesn’t feel very intuitive and often results in a “clunk” sound from the camera. The MZ50 has a simple tried and tested switch. Even the left hand control dial is nicer on the Pentax model. I’ve found the Dynax to just feel extremely plasticky - even more so than the Pentax
