Great presentation. I just picked up one up for around $20 USD with the 1.8 lens in good shape. Once I added new batteries the camera functioned as intended. I am now working on my first role of film but simply am astounded at the auto-load capabilities. This camera is a keeper. I should mention that I also own a FS 1 and FT 1. Neither of them work due to the acid from the AA batteries corroding the connections. I hope to find a functioning camera, or at a minimum a replacement battery case. On topic, if taking a photo with a flash, simply add the flash to the hot flash and the camera will do the rest.

I don’t think it’s accurate to say that they were implementing controls on the top dial “looking forward” to the future (or 80s). Seems like it would be more appropriate to say that manufacturers were exploring different ways of implementing controls on the top deck. Don’cha think?
@mostlyvintagecameras432318 күн бұрын
Hello, Thank you for your comments and thought on this subject. Clearly Pentax were trying something different in '79 but of course it was with a view to what consumers might like going forward. At this time thigs like Casio watches and IR TV remote controls were new and innovative (and hand held games like Donkey Kong etc)all with their push button controls. The push buttons on the ME Super certainly indicated the direction of travel which we saw in the 80's in cameras like the Canon T70 and Minolta 7000AF. The push button fairly quickly morphing into a button plus dial combo for the main controls and eventually dual dial. Even in the 90's we saw a few cameras with push buttons for shutter speed and aperture like the Nikon F50. All of this being possible with development of better, faster, cheaper microchips. Pentax however foreshadowed all of this using design and tech from the 70's as they did with small bodies, TTL metering and other innovations previously. It's always fun to consider what was happening at the time a product came out and what the design process may have involved but using vintage cameras in 2025 and beyond we perhaps shouldn't take such speculation too seriously (I'm sure there are academic design historians to archive that sort of thing in a definitive way!) @ hello, i just tried doing the test and i realized it’s broken because even when i cover the lens in A mode, the shutter still fires and there’s no red flag showing. i have this old olympus trip 35 camera from my mom that has been stuck in storage for a long time so i think that’s why it has issues already. with this issue, if i have my film roll scanned or developed, would the photos i took still appear or it’ll just show black film or no photo at all? i am kinda anxious about this. i am hoping for your reply. thank you and good day!
@mostlyvintagecameras432323 күн бұрын
Hello Andrearamos, Please don't be anxious. If the shutter if firing, which it is, then the film is being exposed to somthing. So long as you have been taking photos in bright daylight there should be some kind of image to look forward to. They may well be poor photos, to bright or too dark but some should be OK. Going forward you could use the "for flash" apature settings to adjust your exposure. The Trip 35 has two shutter speeds but when you turn the apature to "for flash" it defaults to 1/40th of a second. So knowing your shutter speed you can guess your apature or use a light meter, even a callphone app would do. For a bonus tip if you have a light meter (phone app or otherwise) and you shoot a landscape with sky in it tilt the meter down to exclude most of the sky from the reading. That way you should avoid the land being silhouetted although the sky may well appear blown out. Don't forget to set your light meter to the ISO of your film. All is not lost All the best MVC

How do I unload the film
@ivarstikums27 күн бұрын
Is it possible to load previously used film roll without destroying previously taken images? For example if I remove film at 6th shot and I want to load it again, starting from 6th shot?
@mostlyvintagecameras432326 күн бұрын
Hello , Thank you for your comment and question. The short answer is yes. There are provisos however. To remove the film you need to rewind it and leave the leader exposed, or have the means to “pick” the leader out of the film cassette again. When you reload it use manual exposure with fastest shutter speed and smallest (biggest number) aperture. Keep the lens cap on and or cover the lens so no light can get in. having loaded the film fire off the six exposed frames as described above. You can now shoot the rest of the film. However. It is likely frames six and seven would have different spacing between them compared to the first five, they may even overlap meaning you lose two of your photos. On many commercial developing machines, the negs car cut into strips automatically and if the spacing changes mid roll you may well find every forth or sixth neg cut in half or at least within the image not the blank space. Removing and reloading a film is something I would only do if there was some kind of problem that could only be diagnosed or rectified by removing the film. Even then I might just take the hot and develop the part used film. Unless you are confident in doing it and in your lab or developing yourself it’s not something I would suggest doing on a regular basis. All the best MVC

@Thank you for your response. I got AE-1 for Christmas and took couple family pictures with it, later I noticed that aperture blades were not working properly, they were fully open at all times. I had to fiddle around with aperture lever between lens and the shutter. I unloaded the film not to waste it when doing tests shots to see if aperture is working. I’ll follow your method and leave one extra blank after 6th frame.

Regards.

Hello jnuts, thank you for your comments. clearly your camera is broken, that doesn't automatically mean it's unusable butot does mean it's out of spec. Hi, I always thought that SLR cameras metered through the lens [ I have a Tamron 28-105 lens ] but today I decided on a 400 ISO unknown Chinese B&W film of unknown expiry date, I set the ISO to 200 to compensate. With B&W I like to use appropriate filters, there was a Skylight filter fitted to the lens which I removed, I checked the shutter speed and aperture settings in the viewfinder, then fitted the red filter, strangely the readout did not change, I expected the aperture or shutter speed [ or both ] to reduce to compensate for the "filter factor" of the red filter, it did not. Am I missing something?? I have three 404si cameras [ they were dirt cheap ] and one of them has the viewfinder discolouration you mentioned, and like you I do not see any degregation in the picture quality, as for it affecting the auto focus I hadn't noticed any problem. Your review was excellent, like most people I hardly ever read a manual of any kind 🙃😜😎😵💫 cheers. Thanks for your time and effort.

In a bout of film photography nostalgia, I recently bought an ME Super second hand and got it serviced. I have to disagree with you regarding the manual mode vs auto mode. My first camera in 1978 was a Pentax K1000 which is great, but is bigger, heavier and with a very basic match-needle exposure meter. You also had to continually take your eye away from the viewfinder to check what shutter speed you were using. I also find it difficult to use the ME Super auto mode with exposure compensation as it is impossible to know exactly how much compensation to use. I find it more aggro than manual mode! The ME Super also does not have an auto exposure lock function, so you cannot set your exposure and recompose. For instance in a scene with a lot of sky, in order not to underexpose the foreground, with an AE lock button, you could point the lens at the ground, set the exposure, lock it, and recompose. With the auto mode it would simply change the exposure again. The lack of an AE lock button is therefore an issue, but easily overcome in manual mode. Because of this I use it exclusively in manual mode. It is centre weighted metering, so I simply point the camera at the thing I want exposed correctly, set the exposure and then recompose. Yes, this will slow you down compared to auto, but because you also have to manually focus I find setting exposure doesn't really add much time and soon becomes second nature. Also, because the shutter speed is visible in the viewfinder, it is also a lot quicker and safer than the K1000 where it is all too easy to set a very slow shutter speed if you are turning the dial with your eye to the viewfinder. I also find when I am taking photos outdoors that the light does not really change that much from photo to photo, and that you can set the exposure manually and it will be good for a number of photos. I love this little camera and it is growing on me with every film I put through it!
