Your videos helped me out extremely as being someone who just bought a secondhand Minolta without having any knowledge about photography and being an absolute beginner. I am still a bit lost on the aperture numbers though.. The Minolta I bought came with a MD Rokkor 50mm 1:17 lens, is that a good one to start with? On the aperture I have the numbers from 1.7 to 16. For now I just put it halfway at 5.6. What would you recommend? Thanks a lot already!

I just recieved an X-570 from a friend and didn't know anything about it. These two videos were very informative, thank you. I have not put batteries in it yet or film. I am having a problem though, when you take the picture you flip the switch to the next frame. My switch is stuck at halfway and will not completely move all the way around. What is the problem? Is it because it does not have batteries in it? Can you help me here please?

@DavidHancock Жыл бұрын
There are a few possibilities. We'll go through them in order of easiest first. 1- Check that the camera is on and that the film lever is advanced. The shutter won't fire if the camera is off, nor if the film lever is not advanced. 2- If yes to both, try new batteries. 3- If there's still nothing, make sure that the battery cap and chamber are clean. If there's corrosion, you can clean it with a cotton swab and distilled white vinegar. If there's no corrosion, 91% rubbing alcohol and some cotton swabs can do the trick. 4- If there's still no reaction, the capacitor may be dead. If you're handy with a soldering iron, it takes about ten minutes to replace and there are some good tutorials on KZbin.

Hello! Thank you for the video, it was awesome information. My x570 is having an issue I haven't been able to figure out. The mirror won't come down! I'm wondering if it is somehow missing a piece?! I took the lens off, and if I push the little tab at the bottom to the right, it will drop the mirror down. But the mirror will not stay down? Does anyone have any information on this issue? Thanks in advance!
@DavidHancock7 ай бұрын
Thank you and that, unfortunately, sounds like a failed capacitor. If you have any comfort with soldering, the good news is that it's a simple fix. I've done it many times and it's quick and will give you camera another 20-25 years of life (assuming nothing else fails.)

@@DavidHancock Appreciate your reply! Thank you. I found on R/Minolta that if the battery dies mid sequence, it stops in place. Fortunately I found a fix. With the back open, and the lens off, you just have to slide the black film gently to the left, it tripped the shutter and the mirror dropped. Works perfect now!

I tried to rewind after 4 frames (oops) and I know I can’t use the rest of the film now, but it feels like the rewind is stiff and I don’t want to break it, do I try to rewind as normal or should I do something else? I was given the camera and it already had film in it I’m pretty sure and I wanted to remove the film because it’s probably been in there a very long time, however I want to try to save the pictures if at all possible . Any help would be appreciated. I’m completely new to photography and your videos explained everything much better than the owners manual for someone who has only used disposable cameras before as far as film cameras go.

Thank you so much for this video! I just bought a Minolta x-500 and it helped me a lot, especially what you told about double exposure! I really like to try that soon. Unfortunately I can't always take a picture? I've fully loaded the next frame with the switch but the lightmeter isn't always working. The lights on the right which tell you if the shutterspeed is ok and if you're taking pictures in A of Manual don't always light up. Sometimes they do, sometimes not. Which also results that I can't always take a picture. I just put some new batteries in the camera so that can't be the issue. Do you know what it could be and if I can solve this? I tried al this with no film, just to test it, is that the issue?
@DavidHancock2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Okay, so let's figure this out. There are two possibilities and we'll start with the easy one. With some rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs, clean out the inside of the battery chamber and the battery cap -- both the treads and where it touches the battery. Be sure to get the threads on the battery chamber, too. If the camera works then the issue was dust. If it doesn't, the issue is probably a dying capacitor. That's very common with these. It's easy to fix but requires some disassembly and soldering, so I'd recommend having it repaired professionally.

I have a slightly off topic question regarding my x-570! I read that using any modern flash will be no problem, at least no harm can be done to my camera. Sometimes the pins wont match exactly, but since only the middle one has to connect, it should work fine. However when I use my modern flash on the x-570, It will fire properly, but I cannot advance the film lever after the shot. Unless I remove the flash out of the hot shoe I cannot advance it. It blocks like midway the same awy it does when you try to advance it twice in a row It works flawless if I use a wireless reciver in the hot shoe and fire the flash out of my hand instead. Any Idea what causes this or if there is a possible fix? Thanks a lot in advance. I dont know where else to ask :)
@DavidHancock4 жыл бұрын
That's bizarre. I have no idea what's going on with that and I've never heard of that with any camera. It might be worth asking the folks at the Dyxum camera forum, which is a Minolta specialty chat board. Someone there might know. Also, the Fix Old Cameras channel might know.

@DavidHancock3 жыл бұрын
I don't consider it a waste because it's usually only a partial frame anyway and it prevents the double exposure from being wasted.

Do I understand correctly that If I wanted to use 2 instead of 3 frames for my double exposure (with the dead shot) I could just do a double exposore on the last frames of the roll? 35&36?
@DavidHancock4 жыл бұрын
You could do a double exposure on any frame, yes. A double exposure places two images on the same frame so you would only need one frame for it.

I"ve left batteries in my X570 for months with no problem.... Mainly because I have a winder. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Maybe there is an issue with the one you have... from the manual: "To prevent accidental exposures and battery drain, move the main switch to "OFF" when you are done taking pictures. (When the switch is left on, however, battery drain occurs only if the operating button is touched, so you may want to leave it on to avoid missing unexpected shots.)"
@DavidHancock4 жыл бұрын
The bigger risk with batteries is that they leak. Interestingly, the most recent batch of batteries that I bought, ten packages of ten batteries, have all had a problem with the batteries bulging like poorly-formed burger patties on a grill within a couple weeks of being removed from the package, so I had to buy all new ones, of course. That sort of issue or battery leakage going undetected in a battery chamber is a way bigger concern.
@kevinmarkham63854 жыл бұрын
i guess it was so obvious that it didnt need explaining but theres an arrow that tells you what direction to wind the film when you want to wind up the fill to take out. also you can tell when youre winding the film because theres a little resistance in the direction youre turning. when the film is all gathered up you can tell because theres no more tension when youre winding

I watched your videos and they were very informative! I hadn’t used this camera before. Went I went to load in the film, I couldn’t find this video on hand again and ended up watching this one for the x-700, thinking it would be about the same process m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6asmnqOfNOHra8. I loaded in the film and then spin the rewind crank like they do in that video (realizing now you do this very differently) and now my film advance lever is completely loose. I’m not sure if there’s an easy fix for this or if I actually damaged the camera? Any advice/help would be great appreciated! Thanks!
@DavidHancock2 жыл бұрын
Oh boy. There may be a few things going on there. So in that video the dud uses a 24-exposure roll, so those require a few more turns (in general) than would a 36-exp. roll. If you forced a 36-exp. roll then that could definitely damage something. That could cause the film advance lever to be lose (but that would be a hair surprising.) A loose film advance lever generally means that either the shutter is jammed at the point where it's completed the first curtain travel OR it could mean that the film advance gearing is stripped. Either situation is bad and need a professional repair as there's significant disassembly involved.
