Unbelievable. I got an X-570 from goodwill for $6 that wasn't turning on with new batteries. Because of this video, I checked the battery door with a volt meter set to ohms and it was making no contact. I smashed the inside film down with a pick and now the camera powers on and fires. Thank you, this might have seemed like a no-brainer to someone who works on cameras but I would have never even thought of this and this camera would have gone in a drawer.

Tech tip. If you want to clean out the corrosion out of that old battery door, just drop it in some white vinegar and leave it overnight. In the morning, once the vinegar has eaten away all the corrosion, simply wash it out with rubbing alcohol to flush out the vinegar.
@TheGizmoGarage Жыл бұрын
Works for terminals, sometimes the wire gets corroded and simply snap... which might require more work.
@Frisenette Жыл бұрын
A night is overkill. Half an hour with intermittent scrubbing is all you need.

I own a X370 and just bought a X700. I put fresh batteries into the X700 and it would not turn on at all. Following your advice I just used the X370 battery compartment and now my X700 powered on and functions (haven't film tested yet) as one would expect. I'll have to see about cleaning my battery compartment and trying again later but for now I'm very happy for such an easy quick fix! Thank you!

Thank you for this video. The shutter of my X-700 wouldn't fire, even with new batteries. But I got it to work. I didn't replace capacitors. I simply removed the batteries and rotated the little plastic sleeve in the battery door, just spinning it around a few times. I re-installed the batteries and door and it worked as good as new. 02 Oct 2023

Given that your capacitors were the blue kind (solid tantalum), my guess would have been from the beginning that they were not the culprit. Because they are not the kind that are susceptible to failure. It is the black, cylindrical ALEC type capactors that fail.

Unbelievable! Thanks for this hint! I had this idea as well, cleaned the top of the metal, which didn't help... But putting a peace of tin foil did the trick.

I've experienced this too. All you need to do is put a little square of tin foil on the bottom of the battery holder and it will work perfectly.

I cannot believe this worked! I was sitting here, ready with the soldering iron to remove my capacitor, read your comment and decided to give it a try. Thank you! Saved me a ton of trouble by messing about with a good capacitor! I tried with a couple different shaped tin foil pieces but in the end, the only one that fully worked was a 1.5mm (roughly) square - doubling up didn't work either. Since sheet in a small square shape, brilliant.

If the light meter works but the shutter does not fire. It's likely not the battery door.
@stukah67153 ай бұрын
Gonna leave this comment and hopefully it helps someone. I had the same problem with my Minolta X-700... batteries were charged, battery door was clean and power was being supplied because the light meter was turning on. (Also the blue capacitors are plenty fine and rarely fail, after they started making X-700s in the 2 million +, that s when they started using cheap capacitors which look like steel grey cylinders). If it is STILL not working after all that, you might need to take off the lens and carefully lift the mirror and let it fall. Possible that there was a jam somewhere and just needed some extra help. But be careful not to smudge or scratch the mirror or the focusing screen cause its not easy to clean/fix.

What type of capacitors? I have this going on with my x-570. The shutter works for a while but then all of a sudden the mirror locks up. I assume that’s a capacitor issue??
@TheGizmoGarage3 жыл бұрын
Make sure your battery is fresh and have 3+V voltage by testing with a multimeter. See my other video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIa7g4poq9mLqNk for capacitor specs (in the description) and how-to replace tips. But if mirror locks up it could also mean battery power is lost, might also need to check corrosion on battery caps, sometimes corrosion is hidden in-between sandwiched layers on the battery cap on x-570/x-700 and hard to detect unless you test voltage with a multi-meter to confirm.

Don't have experience with the XG-A but the capacitor could be an issue, I found this article detailing the steps on replacing it... simonhawketts.co.uk/2016/05/04/minolta-xg-m-capacitor-replacement/ Might have to find a reputable camera repairman to do the job, but then it might just be worth it to get a new camera with the cost of the repair...

If the LEDs light up that is not going to work. If the LEDs *don’t* light up cleaning the contacts is what any person who would/should think of taking the camera apart would do.
@TheGizmoGarage Жыл бұрын
Sometimes the LED does light up, doesn't mean contact is clean, the camera will still misfire due to contact not being 100% clean.
@Frisenette Жыл бұрын
@@TheGizmoGarage the camera will not use power on lighting up the lights if it feels there is too little voltage. It will use the last juice to fire the shutter. That is an official safety measure implemented by Minolta. That makes it virtually impossible to see lit LEDs, and not have the shutter fire.
