Taemin debuted at 14, and if you go back and watch variety shows from that era, he was feminized and sexualized as a joke on variety shows. He was dressed as a girl and older men would sing to him and kiss him and talk about how they would date him if he was a girl. They would all laugh while he was clearly uncomfortable. Even when not dressed as a girl, his styling was very feminine. There's no wonder he struggles with anxiety and depression now.

Hyuna's lyrics in BABE are haunting. She so perfectly described the creepiness' of the infantilization in Kpop. she was forced into dancing intimate with another male idol for "Troublemaker" as a minor by cube as well. Funny, BABE never did chart well either. I bet a lot of fans couldn't stomach to look themselves in the mirror since she was probably signing about a lot of them along with the industry.

This song literally gives me goosebumps when I hear it, like in an uncomfortable way. Thing is because of the beat, the lyrics go over some people's heads and they basically say you're misunderstanding the lyrics. The lyrics doesn't mean what it does, it means something entirely different.

What are your thoughts on people dismissing the messages in the song because she said it was just about dating a younger person? It seems plausible due to her relationship with Dawn but the imagery and especially the lyrics make it almost impossible to not see it from the exploitation angle.

@@markly5460 Exactly!!! I get so annoyed at how during 2017 it was more of a general consensus that it was about the exploitation she faced as a minor from the industry but then the news about her relationship came out and suddenly everyone tried to gaslight you into thinking it was about that. Like you said, calling your lover's smile "creepy" would be unusual and out of place, specially in a love song. But people come up with all kinds of hazy explanations to dismiss the underlying themes of BABE and paint it as a completely innocent feel good song about falling in love with someone.

I dont know if you guys have heard abt this but SM has a 26 year old trainee who was introduced this year as an SM Rookie and is possibly be debuting in a future NCT unit. The sad thing is there are already people having biases against him for being older than the average debuting age. Comments abt how he’s a hag, should get on with his life and being unworthy of debut bc of his age is not rare. It’s pretty refreshing to know that SM even took him in the first place knowing that he joined when he was 22. Kpop fans are so desensitized with minors debuting but I hope that people would be kind to him when he debuts.

KB from OnlyOneOf is a living example of how fantastic idols can be even debuting in their late 20s. He finished his military service before debuting, but no one finds his vocals or dance or charisma any less appealing than the younger members’. I genuinely hope that 18+ debuts become more common-they’re not a barrier to success, look at Aespa! It’s also a bit notable that as soon as MHJ left SM they pull out the late 20s debut instead of a 14 year old.

Literally this!!! Even as an 18 year old I feel so turned off by the newer groups because of how young they are. Every time someone points out how literal children shouldn't be working in the industry they get called jealous or say that "well it's not the company exploiting/sexualizing them, you're just looking too deep into it" I don't understand how people can be so blind to this. I really hope that people start calling out this trend and they raise the debut age. Maybe if we're lucky a law will pass in the future that bans companies from debuting idols under 18 but I doubt that will ever happen since they make so much money from it. This is so hard to watch.
@NickaLah
@NickaLah 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, raising the age won't solve the problem, they'll still be training the same children they pick up when they're young. If someone has a creepy CEO (or worse than creepy), it just means they'll be stuck training longer or even sexually abused longer before they debut. They then sign a contract at an older age, and are stuck with them for even longer than they would've been. I get that you mean well, and raising the age seems the most logical way to fix the problem, but it's more complex than that. It's kind of like the people suggesting the CEO of Ador be booted out for the sake of NewJeans, she's one little cog in the machine. All it would do is make people act like the problem has been dealt and move on, when it's a systemic issue.

People are blind to this because their excuse "let people do what they want". First of all a young CHILD is not going to know what to do in he's or her future, and even if they do know that they should wait till their 18 and fully decided on the thing they like. As children we should be allowed to explore things through and not be exploited to work for 18 hours a day, not given enough food to diet, and also under extreme scrutiny from the public. These all things make sense that there shouldn't be minor idols. Now if someone likes acting, singing etc then they should be given few gigs here and there but it shouldn't be a full time job till they are adult. And they should be pursing their normal studies as well

from what i've seen this far those people who are ok with this situation are mostly minors bc they want to idolize people close to their age while most adults are showing concern bc this industry isn't as beautiful as it seems. having minor in an idol group isn't a new concept but the way the company and weird fans treat these minors are the problem and i don't think any agencies are gonna do something ab it as long as these kids make lot of money.

A group a lot of people don’t talk about is nct dream who debuted with ages 14-17. Some of them didn’t even finish high school because of idol life and since their debut they have been worked to the bone (mark and haechan especially). Apparently SM has a new rule that you need to be adult to debut new (hence why aespa were all adults or nearly adults when they debuted) but there needs to now be a rule on training age too. Like some of these idols train for so long and for so many years, they get their childhoods robbed from them. It’s not fair.

To be fair it’s pretty common for idols minor or not to drop out of school whether to debut or train and didnt have a childhood. It’s not just an NCT Dream thing. Also didn’t the members all complete their education though. The ones who dropped out of school, had private tutors and got their GED. Aside from the members expressing their regrets of not having friends their age as teens/kids, I do find a tiny bit of comfort that they said they did have a couple of staffs that really kept a tight eye on them who they’ve said guided them a lot, give them advices, watch out for them etc. Plus they have a lot of older members in NCT who became sort of their big brother figures to help them navigate their lives as idols. And perhaps bc of that the members somewhat turned out better than most kpop idols who debuted as a minor. At least from what we see. Still felt icky to me though when they first debuted even when I was as young as Chenle back then.

As an older kpop fan, I have mixed feelings about this comment... I have the instinct to think this way as well, but my hubby and I got into kpop in our 20s. We're now "vintage millennials" and still love kpop, but I spose I have never been to a fan signing. Yet, I don't know that older fans should be demonized for it, either. At the same time, when NewJeans had a fan event where they were servers at a cafe, several older men were in the crowd waiting for them and I was giving them the side eye. I saw a TikTok where a son gave his mom a light stick for an EXO concert, she looked pretty old, but was so excited that she ended up crying at the concert while holding her light stick up. I think pretty much everyone that it was just adorable. So, we can't treat older women as if it's cute when they get that into kpop, but demonize all men for it, but again, my instinct is to be judgy about it when it comes to men, too.

That's true. In the comments of a video talking about how NMIXX'S Sullyoon rejected a 24 year old man when he asked her out on a date people were saying it was ok for him to do that just because she's 18. Umm, last time I checked 18 year olds were still developing psychologically and the difference between 18 and 24 was still pretty significant. Six years of difference in experience is quite a lot when the younger person is barely entering "legal adulthood". Had she been 17 people would have jumped at that man's throat, but sure, a few months of difference will totally turn you into a fully mature grown up 😒.

this is why it always irks me when these kpop fans would say shit like "bring grown women back" whenever someone is (over)praising past hit songs like miniskirt. they clearly weren't around when this era happened those "grown women" where basically all sexually exploited for a few bucks; they had no choice but to dress and act sensually and perform to the music (stellar, spica, hello venus, aoa, to name a few examples). this trend went on from 2012/13 all the way to 2018, when the 4th gen debuted and became popular with the "teen crush" concepts (thanks gidle!). even non-sexy concepts were filled with either MV with really weird shots, like somi's cleavege in dream girls (this girl was like 15!) or momoland's yeonwoo and nancy being dressed with really short pants, showing their whole buttocks in a song whose concept was supposed to be fun and fresh (damn, poor nancy was recorded naked and that video was leaked to the public! absolutely alarming) the situation is even more severe when you realize how conservative the general population in Korea is. these girls were raised to be "ladies" and then got dressed with short clothing and thrown on a stage with a public comprising of grown men ready to openly lust on them; and then get hated on for being too "provocative", called sluts, and being banned from music show , reducing their already uncertain success. imagine how a girl who got raised to be a more "conservative" and "appropiate" woman would feel when she's in this situation without any saying or desicion, knowing that her future depends on her silence.

Seriously I cried while watching this video. I started with kpop in 2013 and tbh at the beginning I didn´t really see the problem. I was young and ignorant but since a few years (four or five) i see this problem and it get´s bigger and bigger. Minors have to dance in a sexual way and you are so right to say that company wanna throw the problem to us. But it´s not true. They know what they are doing. They know it when these idols dance like that, use words in their song texts or have revealing clothes. And I can´t enjoy it. Minors should always be treated as minors because we need to protect them. They are kids. It makes me so sad. Every kpop fan should watch this video.

If it makes you feel better, I don't think it's about you being young and ignorant, I've been into kpop since 2008 and even though I was already in my 20s then, I haven't often picked up on things that younger people have noticed. I think as time goes on we've just all become more aware of things that are problematic, and are more sensitive (I mean this in a good way) to the kinds of power older men can have over young women or girls.

Also seeing minors doing sexualized dances makes me feel uncomfortable tbh.

having been a kpop fan since late 2013-early 2014, it's almost laughable seeing new kpop stans become so defensive of this and accuse everyone of only making it a problem *now* i've seen the reaction to enough group debuts and comebacks to know that companies *want* people to do their dirty work for them by telling everyone that "they're just misunderstanding" and that "they're the one's sexualising by seeing the sexual undertone and innuendos". i mean that new jeans cookie statement was textbook gaslighting (shifting blame to fans, feigning ignorance, shifting the topic of the argument, getting angry for fans being worried about the members etc.) if you have ever defended the idea of newjeans debuting as young as they are in an industry known for exploitation, sexualisation, and abuse; *YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM*

Genuinely this is one of the reasons why I can’t get into 4th Gen groups. They get younger by the day. I was so incredibly happy that Aespa were all adults when they debuted. Additionally, if there are minors on a group, their concept should not even be anywhere close to sexy at all-for example, NCT dream’s debut didn’t feel wrong because they debuted with a cute fresh concept that was supposed to emphasize their youth.

No one is willing to acknowledge that their faves, who are minors, are not in a favourable position. And the community and music culture they participate in is helping to perpetuate and normalise that. This is also coming from a former K-Pop stan. I've only recently distanced myself due to finally noticing how utterly unethical and horrible the industry is. I love the music, but I cannot support the industry anymore.

Creepy even. I feel the same way when younger members within groups are s*xualized or given the most revealing outfits, thing is if you voice your opinion you're a hater who doesn't want to to see the idol be successful or something to that nature. Adult men and women making children their biases are CREPY THATS NOT NORMAL. Especially when those kids are twerking and hip thrusting in school girl outfits in their choro. I get other 16 and 18 year olds being into the newer 4th gen because they're the same age. But a lot of us from the 2nd gen are married or in our late 20's-30's. I hope this video blows up, because I think its important to talk about. Before I start seriously listening to a kpop group's music or watching their content, I now have to check that none of the group members are still minors, because I don't feel comfortable supporting groups until all of the group members are adults, but its getting harder and harder to avoid as companies start debuting idols younger and younger. I'm still surprised that despite all of the controversy with New Jeans they are getting so much attention. People love to complain about minors debuting but then buy albums and stream MVs, which only supports the companies that are exploiting them. I'm glad you included people like Jennette McCurdy too talking about being a child star. After seeing a video by Alyson Stoner a little while back on child stars and their working conditions, I decided to stop watching any media involving children (at least in prominent roles, its almost impossible to not have a child background actor or two). I'm not really sure what else to do as a consumer besides just trying to be careful about what artists/companies/media I support. I also just think s*xualization in kpop is weird overall...like even for adults. How different is 18 to 17 really? I think about when I was 18, and I was still a kid, really. I was still quite immature and impressionable, and I didn't really feel like an adult until I was 22/23. Why is it okay to s*xualize someone that is 18? or 19? or even 25? How about we just don't do that at all? Why not just enjoy the music, the choreography, the artists personalities? Honestly it makes me feel very ethically conflicted about supporting kpop in general. Regardless of whether or not an idol is 18, there are so many idols taken advantage of, forced into uncomfortable situations, forced on restrictive diets, forced to work long hours...it just doesn't sit right with me. Really the only kpop group that I actively support these days is ATEEZ, because I thought KQ seems to treat them very well and is a good company to support, but now KQ Fellaz 2 has some members that are still 16 and I don't feel good about that.

You did such a good job pointing out all these important facts. Honestly, I am sickened by the industry. I saw NewJeans, and I want to support the girls, but I find it so hard, especially after listening to their songs, and seeing the whole Min HeeJin controversy. The sad thing is, if a fan wanted to “support the group” the way they’d have to do that is to listen and stream and support all their activities for them to reach popularity. And if they don’t, then the company forces even more sexulization, pressure, and abuse onto the idols. But if there is support, then there tends to be more of that as well, since the company wants to draw on that success. So either way, it’s a never ending cycle for the idols. Then they have their childhood, innocence, privacy, and mental health forcible ripped away, when that’s not what they signed up for. If these children want to be idols to sing or dance, let them sing or dance. But if they want to become idols,they should only really “debut” when they’re adults, and I think if they debuted as adults in Korean age, that’d be way better. I honestly think there should be an age limit to auditioning and training as well. They should have least finished their education, and made sure that an idol life is the path they want to follow before they do it. “K-pop” and the “entertainment industry” in general has brought many good things into the world, but at what, and who’s, cost?

I became a Kpop fan in 2017 when I was around 14. I was young and didn't really think too hard about some of these topics, but now as a 19 year old rewatching some MVs, variety shows and clips that went over my head in the past makes me uncomfortable. Like, before I would watch minors like me perform on stage and just focus on the song, but I can now say that the clip of that 11 year old dancing with JYP and YG watching made me cover my eyes and look away in disgust

Even in an industry like kpop, which seems to be treated like a major cultural export for SK, there is still reliance on exploiting child labor in some of the worst ways possible. I just wish more fans knew and didn't turn a blind eye to it. I feel like a lot of the fans who defend issues in the industry are deep in their echo chambers and use that to lie to themselves about it a little more.

I still don't know how people are enjoying listening to COOKIE .....the song might be catchy for its beats to some people but it is straight up disturbing ..just imagine a group of minors singing those type of lyrics .. The producers exactly knew what they were doing . Recently we have also noticed how HYBE is doing noise marketing alot from lee serafirm to new jeans . YOU are very real to say the RED FLAGS , I saw alot of comments saying " this song traumatized me after knowing the lyrics " but still they do nothing about it and continue to listen it . It's hard for me to stan a group of minors singing and doing all that stuff . I think the only 4th gen kpop group I am most likely to stan will be aespa fr ...

videos like these leave me felling so frustrated, bcz no matter how much you talk about It, it falls on deaf ears, not until something horrendous happens will actions be taken. Adors statement was so gaslighting and condescending sounds like a bitter 12yr old child, Honestly, I thought ppl where over reacting about the lyrics cuz i didn't read them yet, and when i did I actually felt nauseous : 1 that CHILDREN are singing this and 2 that the company had the nerve to say we were too dirty minded, then talk about "having native English speakers and professors say the lyrics aren't sexual" which makes it even worse bcz they most defiantly know what cookie mean and don't care or the ppl there hired are stupid and lied on their resume. I thing Min Heejin saying she has a close relationship with NewJeans parents is also a red flag, you are their boss not friend and that is all your relationship should be, this is prime ground for manipulation especially if the parents don't know jack shit about the entertainment industry. I fear for them honestly their dreams will soon become their nightmare but i hope i am wrong and they have ppl around them that care for the girls first instead of money.

When I first saw that gp999 performance i couldn't believe no one said other thing besides it was a great performance. Yeah they dance good and i specially saw lots of support and recognition for Yeseos dancing skills (and for being profesional when having trouble with her mic), but dude theire ages, THEIR AGES. And it makes me even more mad that Yeseo has been exposed to creppy adults since she was 13, when she was in busters, a very problematic group, not bc of the members but the way the agency manages them and the fact that all original members left the group, some after becoming 18. 🙃 An ex members of busters recently talked about her experience being an idol at 13-14 and said she regret itbc she couldn't have a normal school life.

As a adult in k-entertainment, i can't avoid to feel unconfortable. As the time pass, new groups are relesed but more and more younger, finally mature fans still here but they know the rules, standars and have money so they can criticise about weight, apperance or skills, meanwhile the teenager public are discovering this world and can´t undertand why X idol has been bullied, eventually they will learn and a new cycle will began.

I cant really listen to Cookie by Newjeans. The lyrics are obviously leading to sexual context. The company tried to defend so hard and people are ignoring it saying that the song came out famous. I like their talents too but the problem should be addressed. No only New Jeans. Eunchae, like other minor idol, is still very very young to wear those revealing clothes.

1 and 2 gen idol didn’t even have timed Contacts until Korean Government around 2012 made it law to cap the contracts at 7 years because of all the lawsuits. Also Because male idol usually have to go into military so companies slowly started debuting idols at younger ages or look for overseas idols that wouldn’t be held to this military.

Thank you so much for highlighting this! A lot of people know this but they just ignore the problem. After New Jeans was where the penny dropped for me. It's not that I didn't think it was a problem until they debuted, it's just that it is more in your face and sorry ( I am not sorry) , I won't be following them as a group because I can't support them as minors basically feeding the fantasies of grown up disgusting men. It also reminds me of how Jungkook pointed out how he missed out on his childhood because he debuted so young. It's sad how they don't have good memories like every child and teenager experiences but all they know is how they worked to get to where they are. For me, the youngest should be at least 19. I don't comment so much on videos but I hope the algorithm does it work and reaches to New Jeans stans

I cried seeing this. Imagine being at an age where you're just young, lost and figuring out the way the world works and suddenly you're treated like a sexual object before even developing a personality and the confidence to be a full grown secure adult. Hybe calling the lyrics and concept a mere coincidence is absurd. Why is pedophilia and sexualising minors so normal in the Kpop industry ? The world is scary. This might come of strong but I'd rather see artists like New Jean's disband than be a part of this highly sexualised capitalistic cult :)

there really needs to be more outrage about this and i feel people have become too desensitised about the real tragic consequences here and thats why it will continue to get worse. these industries know they can get away with anything become consumers dont have a backbone thats why they dont try hard at clearing up these sorts of scandals in an attempt to win back public opinion because the bare minimum suffices. someone with sense will go, " how is this an acceptable excuse/apology?" but the majority will think its ok; everyone moves on and the exploitation doesnt stop. at some point kpop fans need to take more responsibility. whats the point of making so many videos about this only to move on to the next topic of discussion. this is an extremely serious issue so what can we do as consumers to publicly remind these companies that they only exist and have the resources to do what they do because of customer funding and attention. although i am really glad people make these videos to bring awareness to the issues of the kpop industry, these videos have been relevant for so many years and yet things have gotten worse! so what are we really going to do? hyunas song and mv disturbs me to my very core i really feel bad for all the young people going through the torment and wickedness of the industry. the photo of the older man at the fansign for a teenage gg makes me feel sick. a grown man does not have good intentions when he becomes interested in such things and is no doubt in my mind men like that are pornsick predators and i worry for the safety of these young girls and i do think they feel fear and anxiety in these moments when this other side of their reality is put directly in front of them like that. this really, really upsets me.

Not to mention sometimes their skills isn't well developed yet, and then when they're debuting, people criticize them for not being good enough that cause them a lot of pressure and stress. I really thank you so much for making this video, if you saw all the people so blind in defending all this, saying they are "haters/jealous" of their artists, when clearly IT IS NOT AGAINST THE IDOL AT ALL, IT IS AGAINST THOSE PROVOCATIVE CONCEPTS / LYRICS / CLOTHING FOR UNDERAGE, if an adult is affected by being forced to follow this IMAGINE TO A CHILD FORCED TO THIS, when they can separate from their minds that they are really criticizing companies for provocative concepts/lyrics/costumes in minors AND NOT THE IDOLS, there they will understand and I hope it is not too late, when we have to lament some tragedy.
