Minoxidil side effects- my experience

Minoxidil is a medication that is primarily used to treat hair loss. It's available over the counter and is typically applied topically to the scalp. The drug is considered safe for most people, but it can have side effects in some instances. These side effects can be mild or more severe depending on the person and the dosage used.
1. Local Irritation: This is the most common side effect of minoxidil, and it usually manifests as itching, redness, dryness, or flaking of the scalp. This happens because minoxidil can cause changes in the skin barrier, leading to dryness and irritation.
2. Unwanted Hair Growth: Minoxidil stimulates hair growth, so it can sometimes cause hair to grow in unwanted places if the medication comes into contact with those areas. This happens because minoxidil increases the duration of the hair follicle's growth phase, leading to longer and thicker hair.
3. Allergic Reactions: Some people might experience an allergic reaction to minoxidil or to another ingredient in the formulation (like propylene glycol). This could cause symptoms like hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. The mechanism behind this is the body's immune response, which mistakenly identifies the drug or one of its components as a threat and reacts against it.
4. Changes in Heart Rate or Chest Pain: Minoxidil was originally developed as an oral medication for high blood pressure, and it works by dilating blood vessels. In rare cases, topical use can lead to systemic absorption, which can potentially affect heart rate or even cause chest pain.
5. Dizziness or Fainting: This is related to the previous point. If minoxidil is absorbed systemically, it can cause a drop in blood pressure, which might lead to dizziness or fainting.
6. Weight Gain: This is a rare side effect and is usually associated with the oral form of minoxidil, used for severe hypertension. This happens because minoxidil can cause fluid retention, leading to weight gain.
7. Changes in Hair Color or Texture: Some users have reported changes in the color or texture of their hair after using minoxidil. The exact mechanism behind this is unclear, but it could be related to changes in the hair growth cycle caused by the medication.
Remember, although these side effects are possible, they are not common, and most people use minoxidil without experiencing any of them. If you do experience any side effects, it's important to consult with a healthcare provider to discuss your options.
