Another absolute banger in an instant episode! That solarization effect especially those outdoor shots are absolute bangers. Really need to try that out with my Lomo graflock thingy someday. The Mint looks tasty! The design really reminds me of the Plaubel Makina 67/670 (except not as expensive...). And as you said we need MOAR cameras being made today. Speaking of expensive instax cameras, I pre-ordered that upcoming nons sl660. I really hope it ends up a blast especially with all these vintage lenses I have lying around. Hope you get to try one soon!

Hey Ben, thank you for your high quality videos. I'm only just getting into instant photography (and photography as a whole), and you've done a lot to help me in this journey. Regarding the SF70, damn, it's my dream camera right now. Haha. I'd love to have an instax square camera that doesn't feel like a cheap toy, but unfortunately there aren't very many of those at the hobbyists' price point. Anyway, keep doing what you're doing. Thank you. ✌️

Hi there! I'm an Instax aficionado too. I mainly shoot with an Instax Mini back for my RB67, but I also shoot Instax Wide on my 4x5. I stumbled on this effect in a different way. I had a few photos with LED lights in the frame turn to black with blue rings around them, and then I tried photographing fire and the center of the fire was blue. But I've only ever solarized small parts of images, not entire images. Now I'm playing around with lasers, trying to selectively reverse certain colors in certain places, and it's just wild. Great video, thanks for sharing, and I'm definitely subscribing.
@patrickjclarke2 жыл бұрын
As much as I'd love to support Mint on this camera, the rangefinder and framing issues are why I had a FrankentStax back made for my RB67. And that solarization stuff is bonkers good.
@andymarc86322 жыл бұрын
Owning a RF70 I can say you made the right choice. Its got a lot of issues. Range finder is poor, Build is poor, Viewfinder is pointless with its way off framelines. The problem is nobody wants to be bluntly honest about it. Either this is because its such a niche camera and want to support MiNT for trying or its fearing of not getting freebies if they give a bad review.
@InAnInstant2 жыл бұрын
@@andymarc8632 I'd say I was pretty honest about all the things I'd change about the camera in this video. I spoke about all of those issues you listed besides the build (which I like despite the plastic).

Had the RF70 for a week and returned it. As you mentioned, the framing is awful, so are the ergonomics, it doesnt feel good in the hands at all. Its also a pain to have to carry around a set of ND filters too. The TL70 isn't bad but they do need an SLR styled camera IMO.

The Auto mode is not fully automatic. It is aperture priority. And the camera will tell you if you need an ND filter. You can't just point and shoot, you still need to have the appropriate aperture/filter.

I got my SF70 through the initial Kickstarter projects, which means I don't get the veteran discount but I paid like less than half of the current retail price. It's funny that you mentioned that the light meter doesn't work. I figured mine even shows you what ND filter to use. But if I do as the camera says the picture is usually too dark.
@TheLeiPol2 жыл бұрын
Same with my RF70, too dark picture if I follow the camera display advise wich ND filter to use. Best option is using a lightmeter and manual exposure.
@toulcaz312 жыл бұрын
Fun video. Would it be fair to say the camera’s weakness would be the lens? The Lomograflok is now allowing to set the expectation for sharpness.
@InAnInstant2 жыл бұрын
Hey Nico! While the LomoGraflok certainly enables the best results possible on Instax, I wouldn't put it in the same product category as the SF/RF70. It's not really worth comparing results from large format cameras with anything like this since the lensing quality and flexibility will always be top of the line (and for completely different uses).
@dylangergutierrez2 жыл бұрын
This is insanely cool. Now I'm wondering what the characteristic density curve looks like for Instax. It's definitely U-shaped, but I wonder how wide the gulf in the middle is. It also makes me curious if this is unique to the Instax emulsion, or if there are other color film.s you could do this with. Excellent results. The color cast is minimal and the evenly exposed shots look like perfect inversions. Also very cool you discovered that at Polacon! Saw one of those shots on the table and thought you were beta testing some crazy new emulsion.
@InAnInstant2 жыл бұрын
Haha that’s awesome that you spotted it at PolaCon!! Definitely has me wondering the same stuff about the curve, there does seem to be minimal latitude but so does the positives on Instax which makes sense. Would be curious to try this with Kodak color film too! I know it’s possible to do with darkroom printing so that’s another fun application.
@dylangergutierrez2 жыл бұрын
@@InAnInstant That makes sense, the contrast for the solarized version looks similar to the positive. What happens if you expose it past this ISO 3 point? If you really cook a frame in sunlight, does it go white or black? If it goes white, that implies the existence of a third, positive region of the curve, though it may not be super useful for normal photography. As for modern color films, my research suggests they are deliberately designed to avoid solarization. That's what makes your discovery so interesting to me; it's the only "true" color solarization I've seen, and the color layers track really well together in that region. Darkroom "solarization" is actually a similar but distinct thing called the Sabattier effect, and from what I've read, people still don't know exactly how it works.

What’s the correct exposure for this solarization effect?

Fujifilm actually made a negative Instax film already, introduced 20 years ago, and discontinued around 10 years ago. Same size as Instax mini but in a slightly different cartridge to only fit into Instax Digital printers, such as the Pivi, or Digital Mobile Printer as it was called in Europe. It was a small Instax printer that transferred pictures over infrared (IrDA) from your phone. This film was negative for some reason, same 800 speed but negative. I did some experiments when it was about to be discontinued in 2013-2014.

Based on your comments on the TL70 near the end, it sounds like you feel that the TL70 is better designed than the RF70 or SF70. If someone were to only purchase one of these three models (or were to purchase one first before trying out the others), would you say that the TL70 2.0 is the better buy?

I have both and tbh the TL70 seems like a much better deal. The build quality on both is pretty bad, but the TL70 for the price isn't too bad. The RF70 is just way too expensive for what you get.
