Tom Selleck is a fun actor with a lot of charisma, but he doesn't exude danger like Ford does. I love that Indiana in the first film is an anti-hero and shows real brutality at times. My daughter was legitimately scared of him (but also drawn to him) when she watched the first film. THAT is what Indiana was lacking in the sequels, where he became increasingly buffoonish. I also MUCH prefer the title "Raiders of the Lost Ark, as it makes clear that Indy is one of the raiders as well.
@Rev03FFL
@Rev03FFL 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed, and the anti-hero image was aided by the fact "Han shot first" in the original Star Wars. Too bad Lucas felt compelled to water this down.
@jackbits6397

@@Rev03FFL I think it also screws up Han's character arch by not having him shoot first. Even in real life if someone was point a gun in your face you have the right to shoot them. So it wasn't like a "murder" exactly.

Yes, brutality and also a bit of a rogue. He had an affair with Marion when she was underage, he basically was in his 20's and Marion was like 14 or 15.

@@raymondjamesrivera Yeah, that's the ONLY element from the film I don't really like. Again, it is minor since it's only during Indy and Marion's first dialogue scene together and she never explicitly says she was in her teens other than "I was a child! I was in love" and Indy was in his 20's when he first harbored feelings for her, but it's still an outdated minor part of the film considering how underage affairs is frowned upon since the #MeToo Movement. I'm sure if Lawrence Kasdan were to write Raiders today, he wouldn't have had Marion be a teenager when Indy started to show romantic attraction toward her.

I may be in the minority but I think the released version is almost a perfect movie. I'm glad they didn't go with the original script version and since a lot of the scenes were put in other Indy movies, I think we still got to see the best parts of the og script

I'd agree with that. Stuffing too many ideas into one movie is how you get Rise of Skywalker. Another movie where there was a cut scene, that despite it being a good scene, I'm glad it didn't make the final movie was Alien. The original movie had a scene where the alien was building a hive. No where near as big as in Aliens, but still the same idea. In my opinion, that was much better held back for the second movie.

Hey, man! This is a GREAT idea for the start of a new type of series on here. You should keep this idea going! You could call it “Original Vision” or something, and do it for a myriad of movies that evolved over time from their original concept. If you decide to continue this concept, can I make a suggestion? Do Star Wars next? The differences between the original “Starkiller” script and what we got on screen in 77 are a stark contrast! The original script opened with Anakin Skywalker in the desert. Seriously though, don’t abandon this show format! It’s great!

I refuse to add "Indiana Jones and" to the beginning of "Raiders", and "A New Hope" after "Star Wars", and it annoys the hell out of me when people do this. However, to be fair, "Episode IV A New Hope" _was_ officially added to the title of "Star Wars", so someone referring to it as such is more acceptable than anyone who calls this movie "Indiana Jones and The Raiders of the Lost Ark" since that prefix was _never_ added to this movie's title.
@blackc1479
@blackc1479 2 жыл бұрын
@@WmTRiker I get your point about it being officially added, and there was a time I would have maybe signed on, but let's be honest. The rat and GL have gone back and pooched so many things that I think at this point everybody who's old enough is in pure headcanon/legends territory. It'll always be "star wars", it'll always be "raiders", and Han always shot first. (Though I have to admit, I rather like e.t.s species being added to the SW universe. Both for the fanboy side, and it's kind of a nice idea. )
@WmTRiker
@WmTRiker 2 жыл бұрын
@@blackc1479 Keep in mind that SW got the subtitle _before_ the rat got hold of it. They added that when they decided to make a sequel ("Empire Strikes Back"). In fact, according to Wikipedia, it first got the subtitle in the 1979 book _The Art of Star Wars._ My point is that SW has had the subtitle almost its entire "life", whereas Raiders has _never_ officially had the prefix. Same with the original "Rambo" movie ("First Blood"). People add the character's name to the title to link it with the sequels even though that has never been an official title. And, no, Han did _not_ shoot first as Greedo never did shoot. Han's the _only one_ who got off a shot.😆

Two corrections: 1. Toht is a misspelling of the German word "Tot". It means "dead" and is pronounced in a way that rhymes with "wrought" (British accent). 2. Magnum P.I. was shown on TV between 1980 and 1988. It did not begin in 1982.

This film is absolutely incredible. Very seldom is a movie created that hits everything so perfectly. The pacing, action, story, and acting are all top notch. They don't make them like this anymore. Fun Fact: The weapon Indiana Jones uses to threaten to blow up the Ark of The Covenant with was not a bazooka. No, it was a Soviet made RPG-7. Fun Fact #2: The RPG-7 was first deployed during the Israeli vs. Conglictim fiyur

I’ve read the original first draft and there’s some details you forgot to mention. In the Cairo fight sequence, instead of taking the basket with Marion inside, the Nazis immediately just dump her in the back of a Chevy and Indiana pursues after the truck riding on a camel until the Nazis make a quick switch and put Marion into a Ford automobile in an attempt to fool Indy, but Indy notices the switch and pursues after the new vehicle into the desert. The Ford then disappears behind a hill and when it comes out Indy shoots the tires and it causes the vehicle to fall off a cliff and explode. Then later on when Indy discovers Marion alive, tied up in the Nazis’ command tent, she reveals the Nazis did another switch in between driving behind the hill. Also, Marcus never accompanied Indy to the meeting with the government agents. As soon as Indy meets them, he leaves. So he was going to be a much more minor character. And during the meeting, the government officials reveal other ancient religious artifacts Hitler is pursuing in addition to the Ark such as the Spear of Destiny. During the escape from the plane via life raft sequence, there’s a kindly old bespectacled lady, whose actually a Nazi spy that steals the other half of the Medallion, only for it to be revealed after Indy’s escape, he had the piece the whole time taped to his back. Also, another thing you forgot to mention of Toht’s (Belzig) original death is he rode in the same staff car as Gobler and died with him when Indy rammed his car off the road and over the cliff. And Dietrich’s original name was Schliemann and he was the one pursuing Indy and Marion through the mine shaft. Those are just some details I thought worth bringing up. But still a good video covering the differences between the first draft and the final film. I’m even impressed you managed to find the storyboards of the original Shanghai sequence. I’ve only seen the one with Tengu Hok (4:27 - 4:31), but never the whole sequence itself. So, seeing the storyboards of what the sequence would’ve looked like was very fascinating.

The first film I ever saw with a post credit scene had Steven Spielberg as an executive producer. It was the 1985 film Young Sherlock Holmes. Spoilers for a nearly 40 year old movie. In the film, a young Sherlock is attending an English boarding school where he meets a young (not yet Doctor) John Watson. The villain of the piece is revealed to be one of their teachers. After the credits have finished, there is a scene of a carriage traveling through a snow covered countryside until it stops at an inn. A figure gets out of the carriage and goes inside and is revealed as the villainous teacher. We see him sign the register as..... Moriarity.

The 1922 John Barrymore "SHERLOCK HOLMES" (a remake and expansion of the 1916 film with William Gillette, based on Gillette's own 1899 stage play) adds a new prologue where we see Holmes & Watson IN COLLEGE together, before Watson ever went into the army, and Holmes, out of curiosity, goes to meet Professor Moriarty, whose obvious criminality inspires him to follow the career path of being a consulting detective. When I saw this film not long ago, it struck me that "YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES" had to have taken some inspiration from it. As it stands, I like the Barrymore film more (though it pales in comparison to the Gillette film).

Actually, he was going to be called Nevada Smith, but Lucas found that name had been used in a Steve McQueen movie, so he changed it then.

Did you notice Harrison Ford's verbal flub early in the film? Alfred Molina's character is named Satipo. Ford says "Adios, Sapito".

Minty: 'Raiders of the Lost Ark is, without a doubt, the greatest adventure movie of all time." Me: Not sure about *the* greatest, but I'd agree that it's still *one of* the greatest. 😀

It is because it's also a historical, religious, adventure, pulp fiction, comedy, romance, horror movie. It hits every note. The best movie Hollywood could make in 70 years.

It definitely sounds like too many characters and "side quests" for it to have spent enough time developing the main characters and establishing the core locations. Still, it might have been good and Tom Selleck might have given us a wonderful interpretation of Indy. What we did get, however, was cinematic gold!

You probably already know that Tom Sellek did do an episode on Magnum P I. titled "Legend of the Lost Art". So, in a way, he DID get to play the "Indiana Jones" part after all.

A couple other interesting details from earlier versions of the script: It was originally made more clear that when Indiana returns to Marion's bar, it isn't to save her but to steal the headpiece, and he just happens to run into the bad guys and ends up saving Marion. Also, in the final scene, Marion can't resist opening her eyes and looking at the ark, so when the dust settles and Indy finally opens his eyes, he finds Marion has turned into a burnt skeleton.

Ok. I’ve read the drafts of Raiders and that last part with Marion’s death never happened. What really happened was Marion was tied up in the Tabernacle and as it’s burning from the powers of the Ark, Indy goes in and rescues her and together, they escape with the Ark in a mine cart and pursued by Nazis.

A few years ago I read an interview with an academy award winning script writer. His first piece of advice is to stop explaining so much. If you find a place to more low key explain things, that's fine. But stop filling scenes that explain everything.

@@thefantasticretroreviewer3941 ....Empire has the famous cut wampa scene that would have changed the flow of the Hoth story line. I'm guessing they had to make the ATAT attack longer since the wampa scenes failed .. In Jedi Gary Kurtz wanted it to ba a darker ending and not go with the Luke and Leia are brother and sister theme...the original idea was to have Leia becoming Queen and Luke going off to find new Jedi to train... Aso the ewoks were originally going to be wookies ....But Kurtz and Lucas had a falling out and it is said that Lucas chsnged things to sell more toys and wanted the more happy ending as we got ..Also the opening would have taken place on Mustafar and we see Vader's lair , and finally there were 2 Death Stars being constructed in the original script.. Other SW channels have done a series on this I just can't remember which one. And the original star wars was originally called the Adventures of Luke StarKiller and the script went through a number of changes and has serveral deleted scenes . The most interesting original idea was that Han Solo was originally going be like a green skinned lizard guy
