I swear us 80's kids grew up in the greatest era of toy design, I went from the original 80's He-Man & transformers toy franchises, GI-Joe & Thunder Cats, then finally all the TMNT toys. These toys were just incredibly fun, well designed and durable to play with, to me it made the love for the cartoons even more. Sadly even by the mid 90's toys quickly degenerated into the cheaper & faster to produce generic toys of today. Great video Minty!!

I was born in 87, I had no idea that they were originally a comic book until I became an adult. As a kid, I loved all 3 movies. But looking back now, the first one was the only good movie. They went soft with second movie, but even though it was more “light hearted and goofy” compared to the first movie, it wasn’t nearly as bad as the third movie 😳 When I was in kindergarten in 93, I would go over to my friends house and we would pretend like we were the turtles… I was Mikey, my friend was Raph, his brother was Donny and their neighbor was Leo.

Lab assistant April actually worked for Baxter Stockman. Stockman was originally Black (something Out of the Shadows got right with Tyler Perry). Also, while in the cartoon he was portrayed sympathetically as a struggling inventor who only started working for Shredder because it was the only work he could get, in the comic book he invented the Mousers specifically to be used in crimes because he was a wannabe super villain. Oroku Nagi was the original Shredder who was killed in issue #1. He was the one who killed Splinter's master, Hamato Yoshi. His brother, Oroku Saki, took up the mantle when Eastman & Laird realized that they wasted a great character. The cartoon and movie decided to just start with Saki for the sake of simplicity.

My father was in the military and we lived in Germany. We had a small Post Exchange (PX) on base where my father was stationed. There were signs & banners up announcing a release date for when the TMNT toys would be released. These were the 2nd series toys that we're being released mind you. TMNT mania was in full effect at the time. There were crowds of people lined up waiting before the store opened. As soon as the doors opened people stormed the store heading straight to the toy section ripping the TMNT off the shelves until they were bare within seconds. Management brought out these huge bins full of TMNT toys and parents and kids were fighting each other ripping the toys out of people's hands if they got the toys they wanted or didn't already have. As well as the name change from 'Ninja' to 'Hero' when the franchise was imported to the UK, parents in the UK absolutely loathed the Turtles. @@jayaskme2942 Don’t think it was ever officially banned, but parents were concerned about the violent aspect of the franchise. As Minty said, some changes were made in the comic book to animated series adaptation to make it more kid-friendly. Also, nunchucks are actually illegal in the UK, so Mikey’s antics were dumbed down and hardly used his weapons. In the film, Mikey’s combat parts involving nunchucks were definitely cut in the version we got.

In episode 1 Splinter says it's the animal they were in most recent contact with, not the most contact. Splinter says "Yoshi was most recently in contact with the rats". 1: Awesome video. I was born in 1980, so a lot of 80s-90s stuff is part of my childhood. 2: The farmer turtles' reception probably depends on where one is from... I'm from a small farming town (grew up on a farm outside of town, still live outside of town), and here, those were the ones a lot of kids in my area wanted, cause it like the Turtles were acknowledging us as a fan base. Later on, many of us learned that the origins of ninja dates way back to when people would use farming tools for combat. So, that's also something to take into account. Sure, they look goofy holding the pitchfork, but a pitchfork in the hands of someone skilled in martial arts... Well, that kinda makes it scarier than one wielded by an angry farmer... 3: I have to agree that the darker final season just really feels more like a different show. Show retools never go very well for fans of the pre-retooling. There are other examples of this weirdness, where it would've made more sense for them to just have it be a separate show, and not try to pass it off as further season(s) of the same one. Walker Texas Ranger has a weird alternate setup with different casting and a GMC truck, instead of the typical (ford? dodge?) and using more of a rock instrumental instead of "eyes of the ranger". Another well-known instance is the unfortunate 4th season of Airwolf, that was made by the USA network after CBS cancelled the proper series. USA had no access to the helicopter or cast, so used a lot of stock footage, miniature work, and poor quality rotoscoping (most noticeable in the episode featuring the "Airwolf III", recycled footage and bad rotoscoping of a stationary Redwolf from the main series "Airwolf II" episode). While some of the stories were good, season 4 is just painful to watch, and a lot of us would like to pretend it doesn't exist. 4: The critics thing is spot-on. A lot of the time, it was just reactionary nonsense aimed at popular things. Most of the people railing against whatever they were railing against had never actually been exposed to it, and were just saying stuff to get their 15 minutes of fame. Nowadays, it's kinda died down because they could be sued for slander/liable over claims that can and have been proven to be false.

And I remember the later seasons as a kid and at that point I was kind of moving on from the turtles but now watching seasons 8-10 when they made the drastic change, I think they are pretty good. Better than some of the over the top silliness of the middle seasons. But overall it's definitely one of the greatest cartoon shows ever made to me. And if you know your history, you'll know that nun chucks started out their life as farming tools, which were then re-purposed during a peasant uprising, so I could absolutely see why the powers that be wouldn't want kids to see how effective a couple of sticks and rope can be to deal with someone that's bullying you. Growing up my nephew had a personal affinity to this show as he was also named Raphael. Still remember catching an early matinee with my buddy when his sister took us to see the sequel in Brooklyn. And Christmas one year was great when I opened up my present to find the Arcade port for the NES. Good memories of this bunch 😏👍

Having been born at the real end of the eighties, I found out more about the Ninja turtles through videotapes and collectibles, but still got into the fad fast. I was a Ninja turtle for Halloween growing up even. I've experienced lots of different Turtles stories over the years from many different sources. I like it all! I think they said it best in "Turtles Forever" "The Turtle-verse is Ginormous!" and that's just fine with me! I got lots of those toys too. I Had cop leo, Star trek leo, and Chinese warrior leo (although I called him "Emperor Leo" cause that sounded the coolest in my head). I also had a Turtle Troll. I understand they're not for everyone but I liked mine!

Hey Minty, thanks for mentioning Leo's voice actors' connection between TMNT and Akira. I knew from the first time I saw Akira that it was the same guy. Vindicated! ☺️🎉

1987 Turtles is by far the best Turtles show and the intro is the best cartoon intro ever made.

I am an illustrator and big fan of TMNT. When they came out in 1987, I was instantly hooked. Not only that, but because I love to doodle I was always drawing them on available pieces of paper! I never did collect the action figures, but I do have copies of the Laird/Eastman comic books. And I also happen to live near Dover, NH where the turtles were born. Cowabunga!!!

I noticed the green tint you used, nice touch for the theme bro. I remember as a kids me and my younger brother rented the vhs for this show from blockbuster and convinced my mom to buy it for us. So much nostalgia to this show man

I loved this damn show. My brother is 4 years older than me, and I was born in 78, so when these late 80s/90s things everyone loves, I was already approaching or in my teens, but my older brother had already had access too "more mature" stuff. So he had the original TMNT comic(s), and I loved them, even in black and white and all the violence--- but I was NOT disappointed with this "watered down," version of the cartoon. I used to tape every episode and I'm sure I still have my volumes of recorded off TV VHS tapes somewhere lol... my favorite episode was probably the MALTESE HAMSTER (hilarious lol), and then really any episode where like, they did their version of breaking the 4th wall, like when Leo went to save Don and Raph from hanging off a building, he cuts their ropes too, but they stayed in the air, and u see them grab the cut rope, and Raph goes "well great. You cut our climbing ropes too!" And THEN they realize there's gravity or whatever and fall...I dont know, funnier than it sounds lol... I loved how shredder always dissed bebop and rocksteady too, lol so unnecessary... The only 2 things I didn't like was the whole "whooaaa duuuude, cowabunga, righteoussssss," cal-surfer dude shtick of Michaelangelo, and how they changed the animation style to a softer, less impressive, i guess childish style, after season 2 or maybe even season 1 like Minty mentioned... I dont seem to remember the show gett8ng more "violent and gritty," a la the Amazingly friggin awesome X-men animated series, maybe I had also grown out of them and given up on the turtles too (though, unlike what he says in this video, I dodnt grow out of them and move onto lol the friggin POWER RANGERS 🤣 come on guy...u gotta edit that line out for SURE!!!) But now thay he said they changed the show a bit towards the end, I think I have to go back and check them out

That turtle tips stuck with me. To this day I cut up every ring in the 6 pack plastic to make sure nothing can get caught in it. Thanks for the background to my childhood Minty!

My boyfriend was born in 1988 and my brother was born in 1991. Both of them were heavily into TMNT back in the day.

As I said to Kevin Eastman, the Turtles were the BEST THING EVER and it made my childhood. I had a ton of figures, vehicles, videotapes, videogames, clothes, posters, rings, I loved the popsicles, watched the tv show, the movies, I was even looking into the man holes on my street to try and see them!! I'm still a fan even at 41 years old 🤩🤩🤩 So many awesome memories 💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚

In Germany in the early 90s Turtles were also one of the most popular cartoon series. We even kept the intro, just with german lyrics sung by a german singer. Germany's TV stations back in the day had the habit of changing intros completely, but in this case, luckily they didn't.

I remember watching this when the cartoon rebooted in syndication in Canada in 1990. I looked forward to it every Saturday at my friend's house, then we'd play TMNT the Arcade Game on his Nintendo. Years later I would frequent the arcade playing Turtles in Time. Now I speedrun those games!

Proud to say that I actually got to meet three of the voice actors for this cartoon at two separate conventions in 2022 and 2023. I would have met the rest of the cast last year at FanExpo in San Francisco, but I got sick and had to stay home to avoid spreading my germs.

Highly recommend checking out Turtles Forever. Sort of a multiverse thing where all the TMNT versions meet up and battle Shredder versions. Pretty amazing stuff! Sad you didn't mention it - great video tho! Thanks for the awesome work, Minty!

I remember getting up Saturday mornings to watch the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It was interesting spotting the many animation and voice errors throughout the later episodes.

I remember watching it every Saturday morning as well. It aired every Saturday morning on CBS at 10am. It stayed on an hour and showed two 30 minute episodes with the Turtle Tip in between both episodes. The first episode would usually show the Turtles battling Shredder and Krang while the second episode would show the Turtles battling a new enemy. When the red sky seasons premiered the show was cut back to half an hour.

Hey Minty Good to see you again. Me personally have an aversion to this show simply because my nephew ALWAYS had to watch this everyday. While he stayed with me it was TMNT or Smurfs. It was what i call the "Barney" syndrome. LOL. Cheers Mate! 🍺🍻

I loved watching TMNT, The Smurfs, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and Muppet Babies as well back in the 80s.
