I swear us 80's kids grew up in the greatest era of toy design, I went from the original 80's He-Man & transformers toy franchises, GI-Joe & Thunder Cats, then finally all the TMNT toys. These toys were just incredibly fun, well designed and durable to play with, to me it made the love for the cartoons even more. Sadly even by the mid 90's toys quickly degenerated into the cheaper & faster to produce generic toys of today. Great video Minty!!

They went soft with second movie, but even though it was more “light hearted and goofy” compared to the first movie, it wasn’t nearly as bad as the third movie 😳 When I was in kindergarten in 93, I would go over to my friends house and we would pretend like we were the turtles… I was Mikey, my friend was Raph, his brother was Donny and their neighbor was Leo.

Lab assistant April actually worked for Baxter Stockman. Stockman was originally Black (something Out of the Shadows got right with Tyler Perry). Also, while in the cartoon he was portrayed sympathetically as a struggling inventor who only started working for Shredder because it was the only work he could get, in the comic book he invented the Mousers specifically to be used in crimes because he was a wannabe super villain. Oroku Nagi was the original Shredder who was killed in issue #1. He was the one who killed Splinter's master, Hamato Yoshi. His brother, Oroku Saki, took up the mantle when Eastman & Laird realized that they wasted a great character. The cartoon and movie decided to just start with Saki for the sake of simplicity.

My favorite thing about the original TMNT series was all the fourth wall breaks. One in particular that stands out to me- since he’s my favorite Hero in a Half Shell- is _Donatello’s Badd Time._ Leonardo and Michelangelo are baffled by Donatello’s behavior, but refuse to believe that their brother flipped sides. To which Raphael replies: *“Then you explain what he’s been doing this entire episode!”* The animations, due to scheduling, were rushed and countless mistakes were made. But it was lines like the above-mentioned that makes this series, in my opinion, unmatched by any of its successors. Also: RIP, James “Uncle Phil” Avery. No one will _ever_ out-Shredder him!

TMNT mania was in full effect at the time. There were crowds of people lined up waiting before the store opened. As soon as the doors opened people stormed the store heading straight to the toy section ripping the TMNT off the shelves until they were bare within seconds. Management brought out these huge bins full of TMNT toys and parents and kids were fighting each other ripping the toys out of people's hands if they got the toys they wanted or didn't already have. 1: Awesome video. I was born in 1980, so a lot of 80s-90s stuff is part of my childhood. 2: The farmer turtles' reception probably depends on where one is from... I'm from a small farming town (grew up on a farm outside of town, still live outside of town), and here, those were the ones a lot of kids in my area wanted, cause it like the Turtles were acknowledging us as a fan base. Later on, many of us learned that the origins of ninja dates way back to when people would use farming tools for combat. So, that's also something to take into account. Sure, they look goofy holding the pitchfork, but a pitchfork in the hands of someone skilled in martial arts... Well, that kinda makes it scarier than one wielded by an angry farmer... 3: I have to agree that the darker final season just really feels more like a different show. Show retools never go very well for fans of the pre-retooling. There are other examples of this weirdness, where it would've made more sense for them to just have it be a separate show, and not try to pass it off as further season(s) of the same one. Walker Texas Ranger has a weird alternate setup with different casting and a GMC truck, instead of the typical (ford? dodge?) and using more of a rock instrumental instead of "eyes of the ranger". Another well-known instance is the unfortunate 4th season of Airwolf, that was made by the USA network after CBS cancelled the proper series. USA had no access to the helicopter or cast, so used a lot of stock footage, miniature work, and poor quality rotoscoping (most noticeable in the episode featuring the "Airwolf III", recycled footage and bad rotoscoping of a stationary Redwolf from the main series "Airwolf II" episode). While some of the stories were good, season 4 is just painful to watch, and a lot of us would like to pretend it doesn't exist. 4: The critics thing is spot-on. A lot of the time, it was just reactionary nonsense aimed at popular things. Most of the people railing against whatever they were railing against had never actually been exposed to it, and were just saying stuff to get their 15 minutes of fame. Nowadays, it's kinda died down because they could be sued for slander/liable over claims that can and have been proven to be false.

I was definitely in the target audience when this show came out and I was hooked as hard as anyone and am still a huge TMNT fan today.

I've been a fan of 87 Ninja Turtles ever since I was a kid. I also enjoy the 2003 and 2012 Turtles series as well.

My first "favorite cartoon" was definitely "He-Man and the Masters or the Universe"... But that was before TMNT was even a thing. The first time I saw the Turtles ( I actually discovered the original comic series and the cartoon around the same time), I instantly dropped my He-Man toys and videos, forever relegating them to a box in the basement (which sadly would ultimately be lost in a basement flood...), and to be replaced by the entire line of Ninja Turtles stuff! My favorites were the movie tie in figures.

I've always wanted them to do a He-Man and the Masters of the Universe/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crossover when l was kid. I loved both shows as kid. That would have been great to have Krang and Shredder join forces with Skeletor to take down He-Man and the Turtles.

I got all of the turtles one year for Christmas. My mom just happened to be there when they were stocking the shelves with new stock. They had been sold out everywhere. Thanks Mom!

20:40 Actually I think the Farmer Turtles would be perfect if you want to re-enact the Turtles staying at a farm, like in the comics, the 1990 movie, the 2003 series and the 2012 series. 😁 Funny that the 1987 series didn't make their own interpretation of the farm story arc, by having an episode where the Turtles help out at someone's farm, and have the Turtles dress up like their action figure counterparts.

I remember in the 2003 series, the turtles, Splinter, April, and Casey would stay at Casey's grandmother's old farmhouse in a couple episodes to relax In one episode where Casey's mom was introduced, and by that point in the 2003 series, April and Casey were officially a couple, so this was Casey's mom's first time meeting April but she didn't like April at first and had her do a bunch of chores for approval

The mutagen rule was that it changed you into the creature you had the most contact with. Not most recent. That’s why splinter became a rat cos he was hanging around with them before the turtles arrived.
@faz14832 жыл бұрын
In episode 1 Splinter says it's the animal they were in most recent contact with, not the most contact. Splinter says "Yoshi was most recently in contact with the rats". Which is a contradiction of the actual timeline of events because he is clearly holding the turtles lol, but they mention a few times it's "most recent" contact.

Thanks for mentioning the anime specials. I had only just recently discovered they existed. I think they were made as standalone OVA's to promote the Japanese-exclusive toyline that was going on at the time. You can watch both specials in their entirety here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oavUqWSda5WSf9E

I've rewatched the live action movies as an adult and recently added the Shredder's Revenge title to my gaming library. It brings back good memories. At some point I need to add the original show to "the Stack", and show my boys what I grew up on.

Man, TMNT was my life back in the day. Krang and Shredder's interactions were hilarious. After my parents separated I sort of lost interest in TMNT in favor of comic books. I remember looking at a few episodes of the cartoon later in the run and wondering why it didn't feel the same. The removal of Michelangelo's nunchuks (sp) was the death-blow for me.

I didn’t grow up in the 80’s. Was born in 93. But my step brother’s owned the TMNT movie on vhs, which I watched when I was really small, and was instantly hooked. Shortly went on to watch the OG cartoon and played Turtles in Time on the SNES. There’s just something so endearing about the turtles.

yeah, you were spot on about the "professionals" who were speaking out about the turtles. we've seen the same thing from the same types of people over the years where they go on the activist rants about something, making all these claims, coming to find out their claims were wrong and they never actually saw the thing they were protesting.

The only time I've seen them be right about something was the "Mighty Mouse snorting cocaine" thing. After hearing about that for years I finally saw that episode and Mighty Mouse really does crush a flower into dust and snort it up his nose.

The farming turtles isn't that weird considering in most adaptations they have spent some time living on a farm. But baseball player turtles, rock star turtles etc is actually weird.

Nicely done, Minty!! :D 7:48 Nobody knew they were robots until Raphael and Donatello noted it a few seconds after Leonardo did this. So on a kids' or even parents' first viewing, it would appear that Leonardo had no problem slicing a ninja in the stomach. 8:06 the first season/miniseries aired in one week as you noted; while the second aired once a week for 13 weeks, It wasn't until Season 4 that it moved to CBS and stayed there. 22:33 There were three episodes made of the anime series; but only two were made available online at all. 23:40 When Seasons 8 and 9 aired, my CBS affiliate at the time had dropped the series in favour of more local educational programming; leaving me to believe the series really did end with Season 7's Shredder Triumphant cliffhanger. Two years later, the affiliate changed and I was able to catch a bit of what I thought was a new season until I discovered those were overflow from after Season 8 to get the episode count to 13. By that time as well, I had to incorporate a Calvin and Hobbes comic about violence in the media into an English essay. Oh, if only I had this knowledge at the time instead of a few months later... I'll always remember that,

I was a turtle fanatic, as a kid!! I was watching the original series, right from its premiere in '87, & I had the very first action figure line. Minty, thanks for using music from the very first TMNT NES game, on here. Me & my lil bro played that one, but it was incredibly hard, & we played the 2nd one too. However, TMNT 3: The Manhattan Project is my favorite, of the TMNT NES games. I could still throw that on & play, nowadays!! Baxter was missing from that one, though, but he was on the 2nd one. I never saw the later darker episodes, as I was a pre-teen by then, & had moved onto other interests, like pro wrestling. Today I learned that The Tick & Michealangelo were voiced by the same voice actor!! How awesome is that???
