As an 80s movie and music superfan, I definitely would put this in the underrated category. And yeah, in the end she really does tear the guy to shreds, but lets remember that popularity went to his head so much that he even started being 'too cool' for her, and hurt her by getting intimate with the other girls when she started to fall for him. I think they both caused similar damage to each other, and both realized that they were way more alike than they ever realized. Like you said, its a good, solid, classic comfort food type 80s movie, and in that regard, it definitely succeeded in my book

Yeah, it was truly a shame what happened to Amanda Peterson. She quit Hollywood in 1994 despite working steadily as an actress. She later spiraled into drug and alcohol addiction and died at age 43. After her death, her Mother publicly revealed that Amanda had been brutally raped at age 15, by a Hollywood Exec during a private meeting, which would have been sometime in 1986, which was the same year that "Can't Buy Me Love" was filmed. A fact that she kept from everyone for many years, suffering in silence until confiding in a close friend, who she swore to silence, but her friend did tell her family at some point, I don't know if it was before or after her death.

I remember this movie coming out, it helped capture the growing disillusionment with the cultural stratification in American highschools. Cliques, bullying and social status over varsity jackets were still a thing, but like the Cold War the logic behind them were being lost on the next generation. It's one of the reasons I'm glad the 1980s are gone, it wasn't all that great a time to grow up and people need to shake off the nostalgia. But at least the music was cool 😎 👍
