The Rambo series has always been an amazing vector of political and social commentary. First Blood dealt with PTSD and heroes returning to an ungrateful nation. Rambo II was loosely based on the work of LTC. Bo Gritz. Rambo III dealt with Russians in Afghanistan (super interesting to watch it now). Rambo dealt with third-world genocide. Last Blood dealt with cartel violence. Such an incredible series that would have never happened if they followed the book.

Tango & Cash is severely slept on. That movie is a blast. It might be cheesier than a pack of Kraft singles and as unrealistic as Lord of the Rings, but it's an absolute blast. I'm glad that you included the novelization of Rambo. It was odd that the author who wrote his own book (First Blood), that the movie was based on, & killed off Rambo at the end, would then do a novelization of the continuation of his creation. In the forward he wrote "In my book, he died, in the movie he lived (so I am going to write a novelization of a story someone else created)". Rambo was just another iconic 80's action movie. The critics didn't get it, the fans ate it up.

What happens is that people who criticizes don't see the movie for what it is. In my world of perception it's an amazing masterpiece. I watch movies in a perspective of either a comic book or pulp novel and nothing else. With all the cheesiness that this movie and all others before and after, they're the best kind. The only reason, just like reading a book, to watch this is to escape even for a fraction of a moment from what it's called, LIFE... Nothing more, nothing less. Those who criticize don't get the irony or joke of it all. But most eventually do when they see the movies a few times more then years later change their minds. The Thing is a prime example like this movie. A lot of critics have changed their minds in recent years. Why they are becoming more popular again, now.

I remember as a kid thinking that the first Rambo was just like the second I felt like the first movie was a soap opera compared to the second which was all action. I know a cyclist nick named Rambo. He looks a lot like Stallone from this movie as far as the muscles go. Then there is the way he attacks things on his bike. If you hold a time record on a race track, a particular race, a world record or anything, you can be sure Rambo is out for blood and coming after you. He will not only break your record. He will smash it wide open. As training he does not drive a car. He rides a bike as fast as he can, the 20 mile to and from work, meetings, social events and such. Not only does he do that, he will add 20 to 40 miles of circles around blocks, zig zags on streets or what ever he has too to add milage. He also has a heart of gold. He competes in lots of events but if a rider is having a particularly hard time. They are new to racing but hanging on the back, right on the verge of giving up. If someone tells Rambo he will slow down, drop back and ride beside that person talking them through the phycological issues of quiting the ordeal to help them finish the race. He will say, " I can always win next year and get the course record, I can only help someone achieve a goal of finishing the race, of overcoming adversity that one time. Otherwise they may quit cycling. He will sometimes even help that person with training and diet for several weeks for free just to see them get better and help them maybe win a race someday. Not that I would say I have seen him throw a race before. However he has had a few strange moments where he was sure to win. Somehow Rambo will have a leg cramp and that rider who lost 20lbs, trained all year and maybe is coming back from a tragic life event ends up pulling last Rambo to win. Then you may spy Rambo in the parking lot without a leg cramp doing 30 miles on top if the race on a stationary training devise. Rambo is awesome!! I don't just mean the movie.

Two more interesting facts. Firstly Stallone shopped the screenplay around for a year looking for financiers. One of them was Cannon Films who liked the idea but the budget needed was well beyond their capabilities. So Stallone left empty handed but Cannon pursued the premise and came up with 'Missing in Action' and cast the far less expensive Chuck Norris. The budget for that was about a tenth of what Rambo 2 had. Also when you think of legendary director of photography Jack Cardiff you think of The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus, The African Queen and A Matter of Life and Death amongst many other classic movies. He was also the DOP of this movie. It sure sounds strange until you watch it and the you realise how well framed and lit the film is.
