Well, I'm already on record saying I won't be comparing GXK to GMO. The only thing which might change that is if there really are parallels between worth discussing, but it's unlikely.

Thanks for conveying your concerns, I have the same worries. Everyone learning the wrong lessons from Minus One, the videos put out by grifters and tourists seem to be indicative of that sadly.... I love Minus One but the whole response to it has brought an idea to mind that I've been thinking about lately, is gatekeeping okay and if so to what point? Don't get me wrong I don't wanna turn anyone off from Godzilla but at the same time the recognition is bringing in a lot of riff raff to the community. Those same grifters and tourists are gatekeeping as well when they say there's only 3 Godzilla movies worth watching, how many people are they gonna turn away from the rest of the franchise? It's kind of a complicated topic, just some food for thought

Gatekeeping is a necessity, but you have to make sure you're clear about what you're gatekeeping and how. Let me tell you a story... In the late 1990's, I was introduced to the genre of Steampunk. At the time, Steampunk was just a lose and somewhat tongue-in-cheek description for any random retro-Victorian science fiction. I actually started one of the first websites and e-mail lists for Steampunk, and it was just a bunch of nerds sharing a love for Jules Verne, Disney's Atlantis, and things like that. Then around 2007, we got this sudden influx of people who actually prided themselves on not being into the old books and movies and things like that, but rather, into inventing a Post-Goth fashion and Punk politics and things. That was when Steampunk broke into the mainstream and you started seeing all these photoshoots of people in their brown costumes with superfluous gears and things. These people took over all the online Steampunk spaces and began insinuating themselves into positions of authority (mods and so on), and using social and executive pressure to kick out all the old timers who weren't into that stuff and didn't acknowledge their appropriated authority. Basically, we didn't gatekeep them, which allowed them to turn Steampunk into something totally different and elitist from what it used to be, and they in turn gatekeeped us out of it entirely. One of my greatest regrets was ever helping popularize it to begin with, because it became such a source of pain for me for a decade. And this sort of story has repeated over and over again across fandoms in the last decade. They didn't gatekeep, and as as a consequence, they were forced out of their own hobby and watched helplessly as it was twisted into something virtually unrecognizable, while the people who appropriated it gloated. So yeah, no... Gatekeeping is important. Gatekeeping is good. Gatekeeping matters. But you have to be careful about gatekeeping. The purpose of gatekeeping is to welcome and inform people who are interested in your hobby AS IT IS. Who you're trying to keep out are the drama queens, elitists, grifters, and trend jumpers who are just trying to capitalize on your hobby. It's really a kind of behaviour that you're gatekeeping against. Who you're selecting for are the people who love your thing for what it is and want to be involved in it for what it is.

I loved Minus one, but what's been starting to scare me about it's colossal success is that it might end up becoming the standard and central identity of the entire franchise. Like how it's been weaponized to attack the rest of the franchise and having people trying to force the idea that Godzilla doesn't work when it's not being serious and not having messages. That Godzilla being anything fun or different is objectively bad. When it isn't. It makes me scared that Toho and even Legendary could take that as correct and decide to stop doing different things. They could sacrifice the variety that made Godzilla such an appealing franchise and just choose to rehash Minus one over and over again for the next many years to come. If this does end up happening and people keep using Minus one to shame the rest of the franchise, I can honestly see this causing some people to actually turn against Minus one. I personally wouldn't blame them. This could potentially turn Godzilla Minus one from one of the most loved entries, into one of the most divisive entries in the series.

I agree to a point but I'm a bit more optimistic because of the way TOHO operates, they are a bit archaic and they have a definitive standard on what Godzilla should be and have the final say on projects. Current day Godzilla proves that TOHO understands that many different iterations of Godzilla can coexist.

@@Sgt.Dornan117 I'd hope. I don't want Godzilla to end up like other franchises I once liked, where they stopped being creative, gave up variety and started playing it safe just for the sake of being successful. And the drama surrounding Minus one vs the MV is really starting to make me feel like most people don't want variety anymore. They just want Godzilla to be done in a very specific way. If this where to happen, I don't honesty think the franchise would be for me anymore because what made Godzilla my favorite fictional character and franchise was it's versatility.

I'm so nonplussed at Hollywood and the Oscars that I was indifferent to Minus One winning... The Oscars have a longstanding tradition of snubbing genre films, relegating them to technical awards because they're nOt rEaL CiNeMa. Best Sound Editing is the de facto Best Science Fiction, Horror, Fantasy, or War Film category. Minus One should have been up for Best International Film, but the Oscars are a cesspool and anti-genre. I didn't even watch, and instead did a livestream where we just discussed the best genre films of the 1930's 😆 As for a sequel to Minus One... Alright let's breakdown My thought A: Those people or grifters, Toursist or Normies. They know nothing about Godzilla, Heck in fact they're only familiar with the popular ones. You see these types of youtubers are hurting the brands of other franchises, Doktor Skipper he didn't bother do any research because he lives up to his name(He wasn't a huge fan of Godzilla, But still he should have done research). He skips Information, He never take the big fat book the size of The Lord Of The Rings Novel..No No No he skips, And when people don't do research for information you're gonna get called online like " Hey this guy got it wrong, Godzilla isn't even public Domain, Its the image that is. And then you're gonna get called out for. Oh yes what else? Mr HogRider reviews putting the word "Godzilla Minus One wins the oscars and embarrasses Hollywood and the woke media" in his thumbnails just for the clicks. Well to be honest that guy must have achieved nothing, The only big achievement i think he only did is just embarrassing himself on the internet, They called out Hollywood for their WoKe aGeNdA. Buddy i don't care what's woke or not, One thing you people should be doing is go outside and touch grass so that you've finally "Woke Up" from your slumber. Anyways that was Section A and i apologize if they sounded too cliche. On to Section B B: Ah Yes Sequels, People love them, People hate them, And they're most of the time not good. If Minus One wants to do a sequel then that's alright, But..The problem is..Do you have a plan? Do you have the solid idea to continue the story? What Monsters you're gonna add? Anguirus? Mothra? Rodan? King Ghidorah? Well you have a lot of choices. The bigger challenge of making a sequel is how do you make it good like the first one? How do you surpass it? How to recapture that magic in the first film? What's even also tricky is when you add another Monster like Anguirus or Mothra it starts to take away the human characters focus and along the way potentially make them annoying unintentionally. Now that's the problem there, Yamazaki is a good director but at the same time not every directors have a clearer idea for a sequel, But i do heard that if he ever gets to direct a sequel then it probably would have explored more of the curse Godzilla left on Japan. It might even also expand on the black dot that is on Noriko's neck. What i imagine is that ever since Noriko has the black dot on her neck it makes her connected to Godzilla, Probably like what they did to miki saegusa for her psychic connection to Godzilla. Or maybe Godzilla will use Noriko as a way to observe and spy on the humans via a connection with Noriko. I know it sounds crazy and redundant but theories can get crazier most of the time. On a personal note whatever happens to Godzilla im always gonna be there, I've watched Godzilla when i was little and i grew to love the Big G himself. I even make my own versions of Godzilla stories. Whatever those people say like " Oh lOoK GoDzIlLa hAs gOnE WoKe" They can screw themselves off. I love Godzilla and i'll love it Not for a decade, A century or A Millennium but forever. GOJIRA MOSURA SORE SORE SORE SORE GO GO GO GODZILLA

It's not impossible to simultaenously give full credit to the quality of Minus One and also recognize how Hollywood couldn't pull a film like that off. That level of care in writing and, of course, visual effects in relation to its budget is something that hasn't been seen out of the west in a long time. Just because some tourists are saying it, doesn't make it any less true. We can all appreciate the Legendary movies for what they've done for the character, but those just won't hold up as well. I think a minus 1 sequel thats a vs film should be about godzilla fighting a bio weapon. A monster made by man kind, perhaps on accident (maybe it was intended to be a virus or something), but with the original intent to harm people. Could be an adaptation of Hedorah, Biollante, another “Godzilla” because his growth hormones were used in the weapons creation, whatever. I just think the story of the bomb/mechanical weapon allegory fighting against a bio weapon and how bio weapons are potentially the most dangerous when left unchecked, could be interesting. Thesis could be about how r&d just for the sake of it when it comes to weapons of mass destruction, is simply unnecessary and will inevitably lead to humanities downfall.

I wonder what new abilities would they give him? They upgraded Gojira's Atomic Breath so I'm wondering what would Anguirus have to go up against this version of Goji? I remember back in the day hearing one of the scrapped ideas for Godzilla Raids Again Anguirus' Shell would split open and shoot out spikes from his shell flaps. I still held the view that when something gets a sequel, or even evolved into a franchise, it bounds to be less and less realistic and more over-the-top. They always tries to one-up the previous one and avoid telling the same story and gimmicks as the first. Prime example is Godzilla itself. The enemy always being more and more bullshit and it introduced stuff that will make you think "how tf did we go from here to here". Another example is again, MCU. How tf did we go from rather realistic armor fighting terrorist and greedy businessman to nanomachines, time travel, god stones, and universal eco-terrorist. Or Fast saga. It all started with undercover cops and some race, then they put rockets on a car. Another Japanese example is Gundam. Ok fine, space psychic, wire-guided weapons controlled by mind, oh my god tf is this, time travel machine, super robo power up, special attack using ghosts, immortality by having your consciousness absorbed by the mecha, sentient metals, black hole reactor, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if Minus One ended up having some kempy-esque aspect too in the sequels. Yes, maybe not immediately, but if it becomes a running franchise it could be just as ridiculous as MV. Cuz ofc, the main trigger is, they can't just make a Minus One again, it's redundant. Goji vs human again? Not sure. Ah yes, Goji vs another kaiju... whoops, we're the dangerzone, folks. First indication. But who knows, maybe I'm just seeing a pattern that isn't there and Minus One would stay true to the 1st even as a franchise without "devolving" into what the tourist would consider "not true goji movie"

I feel like the very first trailer for GxK was just released way too early because the massive tonal shift we saw from minus one compared to gxk was well, massive. I remember seeing the GxK trailer after having already saw minus one, and the tonal shift was honestly just very jarring. Comparing the monsterverse to any Godzilla with good characters (rare as it may be) shouldn't be discouraged just because of tonal differences imo. For a sequel, if it will be on the same tone and he decides to take the monster fight challenge he said he wanted to give a try to, then he really will need to make big decisions, for example will the new Godzilla even be as strong? Stronger or weaker beam? If it is stronger does he actually want to nerf his regeneration? balance it by maybe giving the new version a new weakness? And then the whole other kaiju, and then the story on top of that, it could take a couple years for him to feel satisfied with a script, maybe one or two, even 3. But im sure he has already had a couple sequel ideas while writing minus one all this time, its almost impossible not to wonder what happens after the ending fade to black

I dont know if this means the power creep will take over the movie and make the humans useless (the thing he says he fears falling into) If the monsters are too strong the human story will become irrelevant.

So, before I get into my argument, I'm going to criticize Minus One so I don't get called some blind tourist when I make my point. Minus One is good. Great even. But it is NOT perfect. The ending was a bit too short. About 5 minutes could have been taken out of the middle to pad out a stronger ending. Noriko's survival was a little too contrived and undermined some of the emotional impact of loss. Furthermore, the ejection seat was hinted at a little too much. I watched the film in Japan with no subtitles and yet knew the ejection seat was coming. That is pretty blatant. The opening scene with the A6M landing has some spotty CGI as well. So, with that out of the way... Minus One and the Monsterverse are apples to oranges. They should not be compared. That being said, the Monsterverse should not be treated as immune to critique. Something I have noticed in the recent year is that Monsterverse has become a sort of "sacred cow" of sorts. All criticism, any form of criticism at all is instantly and outright dismissed under "Bruh, it's just supposed to be fun bro. You're not supposed to think bro." This is outright a fallacy. There is a VERY vast chasm between "Artistic and Deep Cinema" and "Just simple dumb fun." And similarly, dumb fun doesn't mean you can't demand that it be GOOD dumb fun. The amount of times I have criticized that the series didn't appropriately use the Oxygen Destroyer, or that the films give nothing to make you remember or care about the human characters or establish compelling and escalating stakes and been dismissed with "Bro, it's not supposed to be Minus One or 1954 bro! It's just dumb fun bro!" is too many times to count and is the leading reason that makes me concerned for the survival of the fandom as a whole. Criticism should be directed at all movies. Even Minus One. My criticism above is for one purpose. Because I want the next movie to be even better. If criticism and critical dialogue is silenced outright under the excuse of "just have fun bro" then there is no way to supply feedback to the creators because we "killed" the critics. The fact of the matter is that the Monsterverse has weaknesses. 2014 fell a little flat in the second half after Cranston's character died because the rest of the cast wasn't compelling and they were too conservative with showing Godzilla. KotM was bipolar and couldn't seem to decide if it wanted to go for a pure "fun" tone like Pacific Rim or stick with the tone of 2014. GvK leaned too much into the Whedon-esque style of directing where there has to be a funny quip and quirky characters without the substance to back up any the characters as compelling. Also, as indicated with Minus One and in my opinion one of the underdiscussed elements, it the scoring. Desplat's score was forgetable. I think McCreary did well blending Ifukube's work and his own take, though I think he maybe relied a little too much on the chants. But not terribly so. GvK had an ok score. But a score is in many ways, the glue of a scene. Naoki Sato's scoring is good because it very well conveys the feelings of each scene. This is an issue of Hollywood as a whole that they put out some epic bangers in a film, then sort of just... don't bother with the rest. But I won't press that too hard. Scoring isn't a primary but a secondary issue. Further, I want to wrap things up with one cold slap of reality. "Schlocky dumb fun" is nice. But if we don't allow criticism and dismiss critics as elitists for daring to give anything other than gleaming praise, more mistakes will be made and they won't be improved upon. And it WILL end the series. Godzilla 2014 Box Office: $529m ($693m in today's money) KotM Box Office: $387m ($470m) GvK Box Office: $470m ($538m) No film has outgrossed the 2014 film. With inflation, GvK just BARELY outgrosses 2014 when not calculated for inflation. Yes, it was a pandemic release. That being said, it also means, unless GxK grosses in the range of $600m+... then the series is facing declining viewer counts. And sorry to break it to everyone. Money doesn't care if it's Minus One or Pacific Rim Uprising. If you can't bring in more money with each release, then you are in a decline. And that is why we should demand that each MV film be the best it can be. Not by Minus One parameters, but the best it can be within the framework they are operating within. The highest grossing film is Kong: Skull Island, surpassing even GvK if you calculate Gvk for inflation and don't for Skull Island. $569M ($720m) I want more movies and to get more movies, we have to expect good quality from each film and improvement with each film.

Tbh, as far as I know, minus two is gonna never end up the way Uprising did, and I have two reasons for that: 1- Yamazaki is gonna direct the sequel, so there's not gonna be a change in the tone (hopefully) and he's gonna respect everything from his past work. 2- Toho confirmed the sequel by saying "It's gonna take whatever it takes so the product end up with good quality like this" just that, for me, is a green flag and the best decision I've heard from a movie company in years, so there's that

It sounds like you somewhat agree that Minus One embarrasses Hollywood. I would still use the analogy of that high school project, specifically focusing on how money was strictly utilized. Kong don’t have the storyline as Godzilla big g is a fictional character how many situations can you put a big gorilla in before redundancy comes to play why do you think legendary is keeping Kong with Godzilla Kong can’t last on his own movie wise. You can believe me or not Kong don’t have powers like Godzilla he’s just a big ape.

I used to watch the Oscar’s a lot when I was younger but I didn’t watch this recent one. Call me out if I’m wrong here but this isn’t the first time I’ve seen this. It’s kinda weird on how the whole “Hollywood is woke” angle breaks sometimes. I get where this criticism is coming from and how overall movies are failing to meet expectations because they’re pandering to an audience that doesn’t care about films and all that. But when the logic fails is when Hollywood doesn’t bother getting a translator during the minus one acceptance award. If the Oscar’s or Hollywood cares about this image of inclusivity and how we as Americans care about representation of other cultures and all that, it’s kinda funny that they don’t bother getting translators and just let the crew talk in Japanese and let a translator explain in English. It’s weird to have a category for foreign films and fly them out to participate in the awards ceremony only for them to demand an explain on their possible acceptance speech in English, while simultaneously doing that “we are about diversity.” All it takes it just hiring someone who knows the language and doesn’t mind public speaking. It’s kinda funny that the game awards ceremony has multiple translators to have any Japanese game director explain how they’re thankful for the opportunity and the reward in Japanese while a translator explains in English (it may have something to do with the majority of the video game market is Japanese companies but my point still stands on having translators during these kinds of awards ceremonies) What’s also unfortunate is I know those foreign films don’t have a chance to make it best picture category unless you’re already an acclaimed foreign director like Hayao Miyazaki or Boon Joon-Ho, and even then they still don’t respect any of their works unless you adapt their work in English or “why do I need to read subtitles to enjoy a movie” crowd

(7:38) Your right there are a lot of classic or beloved movies that have terrible sequels. But at the same time there are sequels to great movies that some might argue are even better than the originals like for example "Aliens", Terminator 2", "The Good, The Bad, And the Ugly", "Shrek 2", and "Bride of Frankenstein". Heck theres even some sequels that might not have done well at the box office or might not live up to the first movie. But then over the years it gets a cult following like "Ghostbusters 2", "Gremlins 2", The Star Wars prequels, "Lion King 1 1/2", and even "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" has been getting some love from fans lately (at least from what ive notice). 📉🎥🤔🤷💿📈 (10:31) What I want in a sequel to "Minus One" is to see the small chucks of Godzilla's body start to regenerate and become like mini Godzillas (with one big one of course). Also to have Godzilla fight Ganimes, the Giant Octopus, Manda, Ebirah, Gezora, and Titanosaurus. Have a big underwater fight and call it "Godzilla Minus Two: THE TRENCH" lol. 🐙🦀🐉😁👍🦞🦑🦖
