In the UK initials for setters isn't common - normally they use a nickname (like Araucaria, Boatman, Arachne or Rufus). The setter referring to themselves (sometimes by name, sometimes saying "setter") would normally clue I or ME. "Setter's" might be MY, etc.
@AshArAisАй бұрын
2 under par for once! I do like your colour coding for the definition, clues and modifiers. It's really good branding for you and very helpful for yours truly

i didn't get the read aloud essay part (though I def should have), but I got yours truly instantly and my mind immediately went to the one word that ends with 'me' and means identical. solid clue

Got this one in seconds… put “me” at the end; by process of elimination that made the definition part of the clue “identical” and saw that the solution could only be “same”… took a few seconds to realise the “essay” wordplay and how that fit in.

i don't know how but when i saw the definition i immediately got it without reading the entire clue
@jean-claudevandal5069Ай бұрын
Took me longer than i would like to admit.. I instantly found the sa.. but for some reason my brain kept thinking that 'yours truly' is the definition and Identical is some wordplay indicator that i needed to take that 'sa' twice.. but the second i though about synonyms of identical i had it :) Awesome clue
@Stephen-FoxАй бұрын
This took a while - And two letters - for me to realize identical was the definition rather than yours truly (meaning I was looking for a synonym for essay twice that sounded like something for yours truly, or something that meant identical essay and was a homonym for something meaning yours truly)
@horniddleАй бұрын
Not gonna lie. Guessed this one assuming the definition. Then reverse engineered the clue. V good

I think the definitions are too easy. For example, guessing that the definition is "identical", "same" is the first 4 letter word thatd occur to you, making the fun of figuring it out through the clue quite alien. Ive noticed this with several recent clues. Just an observation :)

@TheSchnelly19Ай бұрын
Out of curiosity why do you need a definition in cryptic clues? Doesn’t it defeat the whole purpose of using wordplay? This clue would still have read perfectly without the word “identical”
@ZahraIsMyDogАй бұрын
Who else objects to same being a word for identical? 😂
@Richard-wj6ctАй бұрын
The point of the clue is that essay sounds like SA, but "essay read aloud" doesn't really work. It doesn't convey the sense of words being heard. The clue needs to be something like "Identical essay overheard by yours truly".
@kateh4030Ай бұрын
There are some much more obscure homophone indicators in the UK papers. "Broadcast" and "on the radio" are common ones. The more you do cryptics, the more you realise you have to be VERY FLEXIBLE in your approach to language
@Richard-wj6ctАй бұрын
You are absolutely right, and broadcast, on the radio, etc. are fine, but I still don't think "read aloud" works.
@SharonDeitchАй бұрын
"read aloud" is in the past tense here. So it would be like saying "said aloud."
@Richard-wj6ctАй бұрын
Of course, I took that for granted. However, I would find it hard to disagree with anyone who thinks the clue is fine.
@shutts67Ай бұрын
