Minuteman Steam Episode 7: The Misfits

Not every class of steam locomotive on the Boston & Maine Railroad enjoyed the longevity or fame of others. In this episode, we analyze the history of four of these "misfit" types: the 4-6-0 "Ten Wheelers", the tank engines, the 4-8-0 "Mastodons" and the leased 2-8-2 Erie "Mikados".

When working with Clyde Sessions, long time B&M machinist helper & machinist at East Deerfield and later at No. Walpole, including Blount’s 1st and only Master Mechanic when asked about the 2100’s “grasshopper” nickname said he didn’t know for sure but most of the men thought it was because of the high drivers, small smoke box diameter but with the high mounted boiler reminded one of a “grasshopper”. Clyde was one of the best common sense mechanics (B&M management opinion) and accepted a move to No. Walpole from East Deerfield because as “Packy” McFarland ( I believe) said to him, you like steam and it will be there for a while. That was near the end of steam and so he was trapped there when steam went and until Blount came along. C. B. Ahrens

Where’d you get that color photo of 3013? I know it’s off of one of the farewell to steam trips, probably somewhere around cedar hill, but I’ve never seen that photo before
