Maybe I’m wrong, but in my offgrid don’t need high wattage and the F3800 does just fine. How I address the solar input issue is with an AOlithium 51.2v 100ah server battery. It not only gives me 5000 added watt hours but also accepts my solar inputs. It’s not as restrictive as the F3800’s input criteria. And the battery plus the 40 amp charger were only $1100 US.
@LarryRichelli2 күн бұрын

Instead of Anker expansion batteries. Get 48 volt batteries and a charger that works with the solar panels you already have. Then connect the 48 vdc battery to the solar inputs on the Anker.
@GeoFry3Ай бұрын
My experience with the smaller C1000 model, the DC input is great in a synch, but it was too anemic. It only worked well as a more passive recharge method. Solar to make last longer, or vehicle DC to charge while driving down the road. I ended up using AC off my small solar setup to charge the battery during the day and run my fridge. At the end of the solar day, the system batties kept the Anker topped off until they ran out roughly 6-8 hours later. Afterwards the Anker took care of things till morning. While that is not the most efficient setup, it let me use a 100ft regular extension cord to transfer power from my shed to the house. The other quirky thing about the Anker is if it is AC charging and providing AC output, it will pull your charge rate + the AC load from the AC source. Tripped 1000w inverter a few times before I understood that. 200w charge rate + 200w load = 400w draw. It would be nice if it would just let you charge what it is set at and just let the battery draw down as needed without the additional bump from the source. Like it does with a DC source.

I've been watching other videos about hooking a 24v battery to connectors like XT60 and plugging them into the PV ports of a solar generator. I'm curious if there is a way to use one or more 48v rack mount batteries, and charging them with your excess solar panels during the day, and then plug them into the F3800 solar ports after the sun goes down to extend the F3800 batteries. Maybe set up an on-off-on switch into the F3800's with inputs from your solar panels by day and rack mount batteries after the sun goes down. Could provide a much better way of providing excess power instead of relying on the Anker expansion batteries that need to be recharged via the F3800 solar input.
@djrtime1398Ай бұрын
The 51.2v 100ah lifepo4 batteries are a perfect expansion /solar manager for the F3800 and you get 5000wh for only around a $1000. And uncut your solar input limitations. I transfer dc power from the server battery continuously through 10 gauge wire harness into the xt60 ports on the F3800. If I need a short term higher load and don’t want to chance those xt60 wires, I unplug the connector into the F3800 and let her rip.
@Barc7580Ай бұрын
Just thinking about this a little more, having an mppt charge controller hooked to the 48v battery rack lets you bypass the PV limitations on the F3800. Add an EG4 ChargeVerter hooked to a 240v 30amp outlet from a generator inlet box, and now you have a way to keep everything charged up on those cloudy days.

Hey Ted, glad to help. You can put up to 12 200w panels on each F3800. It must be done using these panels: poweredportablesolar.com/product/rigid-200w-solar-panel/ and you have to have them in 6 groups. There are two solar inputs, each solar input gets three groups. Each group has two panels. So on each solar you have a 2s3p configuration (2 panels in series, 3 groups of panels). You will also need two sets of long solar cables (poweredportablesolar.com/product/100ft-pv-connector-cable/). 4 Sets of short solar cables (poweredportablesolar.com/product/15ft-pv-connector-cable/). And two sets of 3 to 1 branch connectors (poweredportablesolar.com/product/3-way-pv-connector-branch-connector/). If you don't have high amp solar adapters you'll need two of these as well (poweredportablesolar.com/product/xt60-to-mc4-adapter/).

No Time of Use (TOU) available from my understanding. You cannot use grid tied panels with a solar generator. They only let in DC power through the solar port. You could technically input 240v on some units from grid tied panels but you'd have to directly go from the panels to the unit, or use a 240v outlet.

At 13:33 on the video, you said that one should be able to connect all 4 XT60 ports of the 2 F3800 to enjoy solar charging with up to 4 sets of solar arrays. While this is true, if you plan to use a gas generator to drive an AC to DC inverter source (like an EG4 Chargeverter) to recharge via the XT60 ports, without the DPH, you can charge all 4 XT60 ports with just 2 EG4 Chargeverters because each of the XT60 port on 2 separate F3800s can share common ground. But now with the DPH, the 2 XT60 ports on 1 F3800 are now connected in parallel with the other 2 XT60 ports on the other F3800. That means that you'll now need 4 separate DC inverter sources (instead of just 2) to drive all 4 XT60 ports if the 2 F3800s are connected together with the DPH. At least this is what I hear from a user (Alan Myers) who owns a DPH from the Facebook F3800 user group. Is this something you can verify to see if it's true?

Well... generally speaking I'm not against the easier wiring, but using power stations at scale is a huge money sink. Its a big lose. Most importantly, there is very little flexibility. You can't scale power station based systems up very well and what you can do tends to require expensive brand-proprietary components. If anything breaks you wind up being stuck waiting on the manufacturer and/or replacing a very expensive piece of gear. Not good either. So this seems to be a rather expensive way to run off-grid. That $8000 in Anker gear would buy you a far more powerful system made out of discrete components. Far, far more powerful. More storage, more solar, more inverter, more everything. Or alternatively you could spend much less money for an equivalent system. Now building a system out of discrete parts can be intimidating. One doesn't just wire the pieces up... you still need a main battery fuse and fuses or DC breakers to distribute the power. But there are two relatively easy solutions. The first is to simply start small. A few solar panels, one 48V (51.2V LiFePO4) battery, one charge controller, one inverter, learn your way around the electronics, then scale up as needed. There is a learning curve because you also need fusing and breakers and such, but it isn't terrible. The second is to go with a hybrid inverter solution, which is basically like a power station except without the storage. You then just hang all the pieces off of it. Hybrid inverters even have built-in solar inputs, but unlike proprietary power station systems you can also add discrete charge controllers. You don't have to use the built-in solar inputs. And hybrid inverters often include the necessary safety functions (many even include built-in breakers). Power stations are great for SMALL systems, but they are a really bad choice for anything big, or anything you want to scale. Hybrid inverters are universally better than power stations for anything you might want to connect to the house. -Matt

One of those F3800's only has 3840wh of capacity for $4000. I can buy a 24v 200ah lifepo4 battery for $1200 that has 5000wh. What a rip off.

@@minutemanprep What? Buying a victron mppt charge inverter for $1200? Wires the same as a Anker plus 2 extra wires to the battery. So for like half the price you have nearly double the capacity.

Please note that surge protectors, which is what the "EMP Shield" device is, CANNOT protect you from an EMP. They are heavy on marketing and tickling people's prepper neurons, but its just a regular SPD. It isn't anything special. In fact, there doesn't even seem to be even the most basic datasheet on it like how many joules can it actually dissipate? They don't say anywhere, and that is a huge red flag. Instead they give parameters that are worthless. 228,000 amps? For how long? Any SPD can dissipate massive amps... just not for very long. All phases of an EMP? How powerful? And "one billionth of a second"? meaningless... ALL SPDs can react that fast... its just the zener diode that is the first reacting component of any SPD that sinks the energy long enough for the gas discharge tube to engage. Its like saying something is powerful but only giving the volts or amps rather than both... you can't actually determine how powerful the device actually is. Also, thin wires .... uh. yah, good luck. Its just a regular SPD. The most reliable SPD is the kind that trips a breaker, thus permanently protecting devices hanging off the breaker. No SPD can protect a circuit for very long so you have to trip a physical disconnect if you want real protection. That way the SPD only has to protect the circuit long enough for the breaker to trip which requires sinking considerably less energy. -Matt

Dude, they updated the solar ranges and increased the amperage as well with the latest firmware update. You didn't know that?!
@minutemanprepАй бұрын
I saw they updated their site to up to 27a. But did they increase the voltage range? I said 25a cause that's still what's on the side of the unit
@JasonoidАй бұрын
@@minutemanprep correct, they increased amperage up to 27 amps but they ALSO dropped the 'higher amperage voltage' cutoff from 32v to down to 28v so this will basically work with most 300w to 400w residential panels in parallel. So as long as you have over 28v, you'll get the higher charging amperage. Very good change!
@minutemanprepАй бұрын
@Jasonoid indeed that's really good news. I'll have to do a follow up video about the solar input
@davidbailey3289Ай бұрын
Ok so all that means what exactly. One of my biggest hangups with this unit was the solar charging. The other is the fact you couldn't AC charge when using the 240 single unit mode. I guess that changes though if your only using 120v off each unit to create the 240 split phase right.
@minutemanprepАй бұрын
