It'd be cool to have a PowerPlayChess randomized bingo board with all GM King's most iconic phrases: slurp of tea, disconnected rooks, octopus knight, "it's simply hopeless," "this is very dangerous indeed," "it's not so clear," "watch what happens.." "Absolutely beautiful move," "That's a very human move to make."

"Dare I say it... split rooks!" After all the times I have heard GM King admonish players for having split rooks, I do believe that in my own games I'd almost rather not win than split them. (Almost!)

I have the feeling your commentary became funnier over the last couple of videos. You seem a bit less serious and more playful, Mr. King. The quality is, as usual, superb. Keep up the good work :)

That smirk at the end about Nepo using the word 'less' instead of 'fewer' was the most British thing I saw today. Great video as always, Mr. King!

Excellent video as always! Btw I really like how you stress that this 'h' pawn advance was played waaaaay back before AlphaZero. Its annoying when people just look what engines play and forget about natural plans like this. Suffice to say that this motiff was showed on one of the early Power Play Chess DVD :)

Interesting to hear Lawrence Trent say that the role of the h-pawn isn't so much to open the king up as to get to h3/h6 and restrict your opponent.

Agadmator basically plays through the moves with very little analysis and a lot of weaker players like this since following deeper analysis from strong Grandmasters can be hard to follow.

im not seeing what to do on move 29 as white ( 9:48 ) after Rxe2, 30 Rxe2 Qg4 31 f3 Ra1, inbetween check on e8 doesnt seem to work, and exchange sac for open king looks deadly on first sight

An instance of h-pawn advance is Game 1, Capablanca - Alekhine match As for a run of poor performances - "Form is temporary, but class is permanent" in many cricketers' script Nearing half-time, the highest and lowest rated are tied at the bottom - Chess (and at times life itself) can be unpredictable.

Thought about that tactic for ten minutes. Could've spent another day and I wouldn't have seen it :/
@Forest_Knight
@Forest_Knight 4 жыл бұрын
That tactic was outrageously esthetic. But I somehow feel the Ding we are used to seeing would be able to find it. But he's not himself at this tournament. He clearly didn't feel there was something to look for, as he played Qg4 instantly.

I am sure Ding would have found Rxb6! given a hint that he has a tricky defense in that position. In a tactics puzzle, Rxb6 may be the first candidate move. Probably he would not even have needed 3 minutes. But these things so rarely work. I guess "do not analyze unnecessary tactics" is still valid there.

Truly remarkable lines there. Thanks for the great commentary. On a different note, I would like to know your opinion on something speculative: what would actually happen if one of the players gets infected with the virus? (as far as I have heard, there are tests twice a day). Would the player be suspended, and if so would all future opponents gain an automatic victory then? Imagine the Russian federation having to suspend a leading Russian player from the tournament - all conspiracy nonsense aside, I would still find that highly unlikely. Do the rules state anything with regard to that?
@PowerPlayChess
@PowerPlayChess 4 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, the tournament would be suspended immediately but all results up until that moment would stand. The tournament would resume at a later date.

In the line 31...Qf5 32.Nxd4 Qg4 there's another remarkable variation with the same basic saving idea - 33.b7 (instead of Qxd5) 33...Ra7 34.Qe8+ Kh7 35.Qxf7 Bf6 (not 35...Qxd4? 36.Qh5+ Kg8 37.Re2) 36.Rb4 Bxd4 37.Qxd5 Ra5 38.Rxd4 Rxb7!! - and once again, all of Black's pieces are en prise but he's still ok. 39.Qxb7 Qxd4 40.Qe4+ Qxe4+ 41.dxe4 Ra2! 42.Kg1 Re2 43.Kf1 Rxe4, and Black should be able to hold the 3 vs 2 rook endgame.

Why is that Re5 move so hard to see? It looks like a really standard back rank attack, it's not even that many moves deep?
@javovanek
@javovanek 4 жыл бұрын
I think he meant the whole line was absurd but lead to that simple position where you threaten checkmate. It's not like that last move Re5 is hard to spot but to get to this move you basically have to play 2-3 moves where your pieces are hanging all over the place and it's very tough from human perspective to calculate that.
@Dhirallin
@Dhirallin 4 жыл бұрын
That's true, playing Rb6 just to lure the rook away from the 2nd rank is pretty hard to see!
@fabiobonetta5454
@fabiobonetta5454 4 жыл бұрын
It's actually the queen check that makes It almost impossible to see the defence. Even strong players I suspect would stop calculating right there. If there is somebody who can see past that he would be playing in the candidates instead of watching Mr King's ever entertaining chess videos

Perhaps all the activity with 'Harry' is due to Ginger GM's influence. Or maybe the players have been studying Larsen' s games.
