Two years in a row we spent October on Costa Blanca, Spain and it was time to change location.
We have travelled all over mainland Italy. We love it and know it well, but we have never been to the islands and this is the first time we have been to Sicily. For us it is Terra Incognita. We have been in Sicily for a fortnight.
We want to share with you our first impressions. Many things for us here were unexpected, something strange or inexplicable. The road.
We went to Sicily on our goddess of morning dawn - the beauty EOC. 10 hours, almost 1000 kilometres and we are in Genoa. Our lifehack for those who want to get to Sicily quickly and conveniently. Genoa-Palermo ferry. Loading at 21-00, departure 23-00, 20 hours 30 minutes on the road and you are in Palermo. Comfortable and inexpensive. 225 euros for a three-bed cabin for two people and a car. It's a nice ferry. There are places to walk around. Several restaurants and cafes, shops. Great rest after the first day on the road. We arrived in Palermo at 19-30. It's a dark Sicilian night. We spent the night not far from Palermo, in a house by the sea in the coastal part of the town Bagheria. In the morning we moved to Cefalù, where we rented an apartment in the seaside part of the town of Lascari in Piane Vecchie (Old Plains), 8 km before Cefalù. 45 minutes and we are there. The road to the beach. Straight to the sea. We were lucky. Next to our villa there is a path to the beach. From our villa to the beach 650 metres. 10 minutes turtle step along the path past the villas, no motorways and trains on the way.
The sea and the beach. There are practically no holidaymakers except us. We are alone on the beach. The sea and the beach are just right for us. Five metres and deep. Clear water. No seaweed and jellyfish. It's perfect for swimming. There are no people, so the beach is clean. In October in Sicily it's very hot. 25-30С. It's a pity there's no shade on the beach. Trees or rocks. Our plan for October, to swim in pleasure, was successful. Water 24-25C, for us is ideal. We often go to Cefalù for an evening stroll. Beautiful ancient seaside town. Now resort. Noisy and crowded. Very popular, but well worth it. At the end of October Cefalù is full house. The beach is full of people. The impression that the peak season is August. By the way, recently the next film Indiana Jones. Wheel of Fate. With the ageless Harrison Ford. The city is located at the foot of a rock shaped like a head. Hence the name. Kepha is Greek for head. According to another version, the name is Phoenician. Kefas is a rock. While the sea is warm, we do not travel much. We made trips to nearby towns in the mountains. Lascari and Campofelice are very close, but there is nothing to see there. To Graterri and Castelbuono serpentines are concrete. In the first one beautiful rocks, but the entrance is closed, in the second one you can walk around, which we did. It's an interesting town. Maybe we will film a separate story about it. In all mountain towns you can see the desolation. The population is very old. It's practically just old people. And the houses are just like them.
Nature. In the north of Sicily there are many flowering trees of unreal beauty. Fruit trees are very diverse. Besides traditional olive and citrus trees, there are many figs, persimmons and medlars.
Apartment. Our villa consists of two apartments. We are on the first floor. The apartment has a full kitchen, we cook ourselves. Therefore, well studied the local products. Products.The main surprise is the fish. We are on an island surrounded on all sides by seas, and there is no fish. To be exact, there is a little bit, but the choice is poor and prices are high. The second surprise is fruit and vegetables. Sicily is considered an agricultural region, but we did not find a single farmer's market in the vicinity, and the choice in the shop is depressing. The same as we have in the Czech Republic, or rather even worse. And definitely more expensive. Hopefully the situation is better in other areas of Sicily.With this in mind, we have greatly increased the amount of pasta in our diet, and it is first class here, gnocci, tortellini, ravioli, etc. Cheeses. Mozzarella, burrata, ricotta, parmesan, gorgonzola with mascarpone, etc. Dairy. No problems with meat products. All first-class. Delicious bread. Sweet pastries and biscuits are beyond praise. Naturally, cannoli. In short, you can't lose weight in Sicily. The water is very bad. You can't drink from the tap at all. Shop water is not much better. Prices. Our apartment two bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen-living room, large terrace and territory with parking. 960 euros for a month. Petrol 1.9 euros per litre. In the Czech Republic and Spain it's 1.6. I have no explanation. Mafia. Food prices plus minus, like everywhere else in Europe.
