In terms of the writing, it’s not perfect, but it is very entertaining. I often wonder what working in the industry is like, specially for a show like miraculous ladybug which has become popular in over 120 countries, each with their own restrictions and rules against what can and can’t be seen in the show. Of all the shows I have seen, miraculous ladybug is undoubtably one show which basically exploded worldwide, which is not normally seen in kids shows. Although the criticism towards this show reminds me of when the Steven universe and gravity falls fandom was still active.

I kinda got the impression that Emily might have been a controlling partner. Adrien has more freedom under his father than he did when his mother was still around. Gabriel has severe anxiety leaving him unable to leave the house on most days, you'd think he's the one keeping his son close, but maybe it was Emily all along trying to control every aspect of her family's life and now Gabriel is spiralling because he's missing the direction she gave his life, suddenly he's in charge and his life is falling apart, his son is talking back and the walls are closing in, which is why he works so hard to get her back, it would be so much easier if she was back in charge. Or at least that's the thought process, I guess the substance abuse angle still makes sense in that context.

This is a really fresh and interesting take on Gabriel as a character. I’ve witnessed substance abuse before and would definitely agree with your points here. And I really appreciate the nuance you put into this analysis (as you always do)! It’s easy to paint addicts in the worst light. And it’s true that they make selfish decisions - when your whole life revolves around the next hit, or the next drink, or even the next akuma, you tend to make very bad decisions and push aside the important people in your life. But that still doesn’t make it ok to make fun of addicted people or substance abuse as a whole. It’s literally a sickness. There’s so much more nuance there than just “why don’t you just quit lmao.” So thank you for highlighting that! I really like when people can have conversations about addiction very frankly without demonizing the person themselves.

Do U remember how Audrey described Gabriel as a pathetic guy who used to try to make designs and she “found” him and gave him notoriety added to the fact that he’s not a “old rich” since he MARRIED into Emily’s family who is fairly wealthy? Another thing to mention. Gabriel, the master of manipulation, is so hooked on the power, that he didn't see through Lila Rossi, a teenager, manipulation when they met. Lila being an actual model now is because of Gabriel Agreste substance abuse making him dumb enough for her to manipulate. If he was in his right man, he would have seen her for what she truly was and put her on his banned list.

You're so right on the fact that addiction doesn't just affect the one who is addicted. My oldest sister's addiction led my mom being torn apart from her grandkids who are now with their father, and other family members who no longer trust my mom and our side of the family (even though we had nothing to do with it). It's so tragic.

I'm surprised it's been out since 2016 and their progress has been this imao. And like I didn't expect him to akumatize his son, I really thought that he would draw the line with his son, but he loves his wife so much more. And his duck butt hair sucks like fashion designer huh??? And the people must be insanely traumatized like they got turned into ice cream. I'm not sure we're their going with this, I don't think redemption is possible, he was willing to destroy the whole world basically (Chat Blanc) no concern for the conquences just to get the lady bug miraculous. I know it's a kids show so they won't go all that deep unfortunately.

Why are some addictions taken more seriously than others like drug addictions versus soda addictions? Sugar and caffeine addictions are usually treated as gags in kid shows like Mac from Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends has a sugar/caffeine addiction and he pretty much acts like a stereotypical alcoholic when he eats too much ice cream and the ice cream server has to cut him off like a bartender would do and his mom doesn't allow him to have sugar or caffeine because he likes a little devil if he even has a piece of candy. Another example is Angelica Pickles with cookies. She would eat a bunch of cookies even if they are dissolving in water. There is Dexter and DeeDee's parents having to get through their entire day to day life because of coffee, so when Dexter and DeeDee gets into being coffee addicts. Maybe caffeine and sugar addictions are just metaphors for drug addiction in kid shows. Didn't Saved By the Bell have an episode about one of the cast members and her addiction to caffeine pills or something? There really needs to be more shows about weaning people off, consult a doctor, and not conflating taking drugs with addiction. I feel like I am just rambling and just shut up because "I don't know what I am talking about or overthinking a gag."

Loves Art23 and Callimara have both done redesigns for Gabriel and they were absolutely amazing. Honestly I was so intrigued by Gabriel in the first 2 seasons and it’s so sad that they completely butchered his character in order to progress the plot of the show. He’s supposed to be a business savvy fashion prodigy who literally built a fashion empire from nothing, he’s supposed to be smart like Adrien and yet they dumb him and his son down so Ladybug can win The only hope I have for his character now is perhaps giving him his own prequel show or something because they can explore a lot with his background and his ideologies to really dig deep in why he is the way he is now. Also people underestimate grief and loss and tbh that’s the writers fault to not exploring it. Grief can be an all consuming emptiness and can ruin you. 2 years ago I lost my mother and I felt this inexplicable emptiness like nothing in the world mattered, I bottled everything up and got into really unhealthy habits which I feel like is what fundamentally Gabriel is doing even on an extreme level. So just to say ‘get some grief counselling’ or ‘ get some therapy’ is really shallow and shows that the creators have ruined a really good character exploration for Gabriel. Also a little fact- Gabriel’s character is based on Gabrielle Coco Chanel who was a morphine addict and so Gabriel’s role may serve as an allegory for his character inspiration.

This analysis is exactly why I feel like Miraculous has deceptive writing - where on the surface it's really simple/seems to not be that well written, but when you start to really think about it and take a closer look, it gets so much deeper/darker. Something I noticed in the clips you had in your video... it looked like towards the beginning of the series, the light reflecting in Gabriel's eyes was brighter, but later in the series it looks like it gets shadowed more and more, while with Hawkmoth/Shadowmoth, the exact opposite happens. I'm going to guess this more has to do with the different animation studios using different models and everything, but it still might be there?

I might be late but the writers are inconsistent with his character but i think the reason gabriel doesnt quit is because maybe the miraculous can corrupt someone if they dont have the best intentions(in this case gabriel). Didnt lila and gabriel have an agreement to protect adrien from his friends. Youd think they wouldve made some scenes of gabriel being a father figure to lila and we couldve found out more about lilas backstory but no. We got only one vague clue. Also i feel like the writers expect us to sympathize with gabriel but its pretty bad they expect us to sympathize with someone whos willing to destroy the world as seen in ( dearest family, cat blanc,ephemeral) and a man who emotionally abuses and neglects their son. The writers are mixing him being a pyscopath and sympathetic villan when it comes to his character so thats why it just doesnt work. If the miraculous can corrupt a holder it would make more sense for them to mix the pyscopath and sympathetic villan together. He also almost killed alyas family in the sentibubbler episode. But when it comes to chloe thomas asstruck views her as irredemable even though she does nothing compared to what he does. Even jagged stone has a redemption arc, a man who left his wife and kids because he felt he wasnt cool to be a father is redeemed so quick but not chloe. Now onto emelie. I think emelie agreste is worse than gabriel. We get vauge clues where gabriel said emily had a temper. I think emily was manipulative and tried to portray herself as a saint to adrien and everyone aroumd her. But shes the evil one cause adrien couldnt even go to school even while she was around but he is now that emelies not around. Shes the type to say im doing this to protect you and adrien would believe it. Maybe gabriel and adrien know shes a bad person but is just praising her because shes dead and when someones dead you speak on the good stuff they did rather than the bad.

I literally stopped the video to write this but like, yeah honestly I never thought about any connections to drug or substance abuse or even just addictions in general but now that I've seen this take, I can actually see it. It's like me with my own bad habits such as overeating especially with high0-calorie junk food. I know it's only gonna lead to me taking on more weight than I'm ever gonna be able to lose but I keep unnecessarily eating and eating bc my brain just registers me being bored as "Just do anything for the sake of it, even if it's eating." That's what Nooru is, essentially. He's a junk food that's telling Gabriel to stop eating him but Gabe makes excuses because it's easier to justify using Nooru than to admit he's having trouble stopping because he's afraid of what might happen to him if he stops at this point. Will he end up like Emilie? Will he end up in a worse fate than her? He doesn't know and it scares him. He truly is a tragic man.

Interesting interpretation, I read another interpretations stating he is just gradually loosing himself and going crazy the more he fails to obtain the miraculous he needs to save his wife. The longer he fails, the more he is willing to break boundaries. In season 1 he was willing to push strangers, like Nino, emotionally in order to akumatize them, but near the end of season 1 he was now willing to akumatize the daughter of one of his closest friends, Chloe. In season 2 he was now willing to break his personal boundaries and begin akumatizing people within the confines of his own home, like the family body guard and Natalie, effectively leading him to walk down a darker path believing that if it is for the sake of saving his wife and restoring her to the family then he is in the right and if there is the slightest chance that he can gain the upper hand in accomplishing his goal then he will avoid his morals and better judgment, hence why a lot of people in the fanbase were not surprised he was willing to akumatize his own son Adrien in season 3. Unfortunately the longer he remains as hawkmoth, the more he looses himself, so in a sense, he’s gone mad with power and blinded by his goals and ambitions.

Very great analysis 🤩I've never thought about Gabriel showing sign of substance abuse before, expect during the episode Glaciator 2 when Gabriel himself state that akumatizing people is like ice cream for him, once he tasted it he can't go out without it. Literally, Gabriel himself admitted during this episode that he kinda became addiceted to akumatizing people. Also let's not forget that Audrey and Chloé, and also Lila during heroes days, were not the only people Gabriel willingly upseted in order to akumatize them, he deliberately blackmailed a 14-year-old girl so she wouldbe more vulnerable than ever to akumatization, knowing full well that he would break his own son's heart by doing so. And he encouraged a sociopath teen to create a situation where the same 14-year-old girl would be more hurt and upset than ever, just so he could akumatize her and everyone close to her. And I agree that taking an entire family hostage and nearly killing them remains one of the worst things he's done, among those, the times he willfully traumatized his own son so he could akumatize him. You're so right, Gabe is addicted to Nooroo and to hurting other people with his powers, I'm not even sure if he's really doing all of this to bring his wife back anymore, of if he's just became too addicted to being a supervillain to stop I still don't like Nathalie because she's willingly helping a father terrorising a whole city and putting innocent people in danger, among them the friends of the son she's supposed to care about. And also because she's in love with a man who clearly abuse and neglect his son and enjoy hurting people. But to imagine that Nathalie could be mostly motivated in helping Gabriel because she wants him to stop, and that she thinks the quickest way to do so is to help him get what he wants makes her more interresting. Unfortunattely, I think Nathalie is also becoming addicted to the feeling of being a villain and hurting others, to the point of ruining her own health for him, which is also what a relationship with an addicted person can do to someone, I think.
