Miraculous Ladybug Theory: Why NOBODY Recognizes Ladybug & Cat Noir

Miraculous may not be the perfect show, but man is it charming. But there's one problem that seems to hurt the show from a writing standpoint that deserves an explanation. Why is it that nobody can figure out that Marinette and Adrien are Ladybug and Cat Noir respectively? Could there be a canonical reason for this? Let's talk about it.

ikr?? it's even more annoying when you take into account how so many of them, when akumatised, look _completely_ different. Like, Juleka and Reflekta for example. Had I not known in advance, I would have struggled to match the eye colour and height for quite a bit. Arguably, "akuma magic" isn't necessarily the same as kwami transformation magic, but still.

Alya actually did make the resemblance between Adrien and Cat Noir during an episode which was shot down by Marinette for some odd reason. Alya even drew on a picture of Adrien to make him look pretty much like his Cat Noir self, and Marinette still said there was no way they were the same person. I think a lot of the people just don't think the people they are friends with or go to school with could be Ladybug and Cat Noir, so they just don't make the connections. Especially with Chloe's case, she can't stand Marinette, and she adores Ladybug. It would kinda make sense how she wouldn't believe that Marinette could possibly be Ladybug because of how much she dislikes her. Then, with Alya, she probably thinks Marinette would tell her, so there wasn't any way Marinette would keep that much of a secret from her which causes her not to think about it on that standpoint. Buuuut that would just be my look on it. Thanks

Magic does seem to be the best answer. Remember the ladywifi episode? Ladywifi tried to pull off ladybug's mask but couldn't. Ladybug claimed it because of "magic". The masks could have a cloaking magic to them so that no one will figure out the miraculous holder. It would be the most logical, because wouldn't it be best that the identity of a miraculous user be hidden from enemies? Magic like is the best option I swear

it might be because little kids who stumble upon the show may be confused why the main characters aren't there any more. it's easier to understand if they look the same when they are superheroes. we hear their individual thoughts and noone else does. we see it through their eyes, so they are more recognizable through the screen because of the narration type.

They explained this already. It IS kwami magic. Kwami cannot be seen by regular people, when the heroes transform they FUSE with their Kwami, I.E. they are semi-unseeable to normal people and probably only a bit more see-able to each other. Like when you see an illusion picture, yes it looks like an old hag, but it also looks like a young women, and its screwing with your puny human brain. Muahahaha lol

In an episode (I think it was Princess Fragrance S.1 Ep.1) where it shows that regular people can in fact see Kwamis (There is another episode that says that Kwamis can’t be seen in pictures but that is way different then actually being able to see them)

The show already states that the miracoulous were created for the specific puprose of allowing normal people to see Kwami. Chloe picked up Till I in princess fragrance, but Chloe is a future hero so she should already be able to see Kwami or else she could not see her own. Aslo Tikki was sick so that may have helped Chloe see her although she is not Chloes Kwami.

Kay, let me address some questions about kwami not being invisible. 1. usually when you have spirit creatures, if anyone can see them, it's children. Often to their parents confusion. 2. I've seen many shows where invisible creatures will still hide from normal humans because they can still interact with the physical world, it's freaking humans out if they accidentally touch something they don't see. Also, because the invisible creatures are small, they could get accidentally hurt or even killed.

And 3, this show isn't Steven Universe, Star Butterfly, Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, or MLP. There is a running Mystery true, but it's pretty obvious by the amount of general inconsistencies that small details and even large pieces of lore aren't being scrutinized by the writers. As much as we love it, it's just meant to be a kids show with a generalized plot and a bit of "teen drama" for the slightly older audience. So yeah, not lazy writing, but not the strictest either. Stories like this can have Tiki caught in one episode and still have her sitting on Marinettes shoulder in another. The rules change as the plot demands. This might get stricter later, it might even get looser, but it will probably never be consistent.

Literally, from the moment I started to watch this show, I simply thought that the magic of their Kwami's/costume or magic in general just prevents others from connecting the obvious. I've always assumed it was sort of like Harry Potter's notice-me-not charm (causes people to ignore the caster; in this case, the charm make the obvious unnoticeable), so their identity would remain a secret. I have no idea when I started to think like this, but it always made sense to me rather than just assuming that they are idiots (which they can be sometimes).

That would explain why Chat looks different from his civilian counterpart and how Ladybug doesn't. I once had a friend during secondary school (British schools), who had taken it upon themselves to dye their hair and change something about their physical appearance for a month. Not really noticeable up close, but it worked. Their friends kept thinking there was a bunch of students who were being swapped between classes, until May 1st. (Yup, they started on April 1st, and did it for a month!) Once they came in looking normal, they faked being out of the loop of the new people, stating that they only saw them in the toilet stalls. ... I figured it out quickly, as I knew their behaviour too well (I'm a decent body language analyser), but I said to them the next day - wear my glasses during lunch. So I went off to order my lunch, he got his lunch, but because of my looks, I kept being given his name, while he got mine!! we had a good laugh the next day when he told everyone in registration! Here’s my theory on why they can’t seem to recognize each other. First we’ll start with Marinette. Marinette clearly has a huge crush on Adrien, but maybe not for the reasons we think. I think that she likes Adrien mainly for his personality because he is such a different person than, say Chat. She thinks that Adrien and Chat have such different personality’s, for example, Adrien is kind and honest and Chat is kind of arrogant and punny (which Ladybug and Marinette find annoying). Adrien never acts like Chat. Also, of course, Adrien’s eyes and hair changes when he transforms so that probably contributes to it. Now for Chat. This is pretty much the same as Marinette. Chat and Adrien admire Ladybug’s bravery and sense of adventure. When Ladybug is Marinette, Marinette acts extremely nervous and jittery around Adrien, so maybe that’s why he loves Ladybug so much and not Marinette. But, once again, maybe Adrien/Chat does like Marinette because she has the same hair and eyes as Ladybug, but that’s only if we’re talking about why they like each other for looks. So in conclusion, Ladybug/Marinette and Chat Noir/Adrien cannot recognize each other because they don’t really pay tooo much attention to looks. If you made it this far, thanks :)

I don't think it's fair to say 'it will never live up to the potential of Steven universe or gravity falls' the story is excellently written, the characters are likeable and diverse, and it has a completely unique world which is so interesting to follow and find out about, yeah you can be annoyed that no body recognises them but that is seriously the last thing I think about when watching the show, miraculous isn't Steven universe, miraculous isn't gravity falls, miraculous isn't stvfoe, miraculous is miraculous lady bug, you can't knock it on the grounds that you didn't think the story was as well written as the other shows, and what about how international the show is and how many different countries it is aired too and worked on, the characters not recognising eachother really isn't that deep lol

They both act different when they're Laybug and Chat Noir. -Chat Noir acts flirtly unlike Adrien. -Ladybug actually talks to Chloe, and isn't as clumsy and braver. And Miraculous Ladybug isn't Steven Universe. -People have done plenty of art and edits of ladybug and chat noir looking how they look. And if they changed their maskes, they'd have to change the ALL the merchandise.

You forgot the fact that if people don't expect it or dont want to see it their brain overlooks it. E.I. chloe might have had suspicions about marrinette but can't believe that she is ladybug or how marinette doesn't believe that chat noir and Adrian are the same because she LIKES Adrian but thinks Chat is a flirt. Our human minds can overlook things like that, besides you need to realise that they are living the adventures and when you are outside the action things are much clearer. Plus, in the universe, there may be more fights than shown- so the heroes could have had some close calls we don't know about.

I was rewatching this series today and noticed something I hadn't really fully registered before... Cat Noir's hair is longer and fuller than Adrien's. Once I'd noticed this, I double-checked, and it's not just styled differently, it really is longer and fuller. Combined with his much more boisterous personality when he's Cat Noir, the changing hair lengths when he is and isn't transformed would be enough, I think, to cast doubt for anyone suspicious of his dual identity. There are other theories/moments too like like how Plagg and Tikki know about the superheroes identities and how they both actually like each other in different forms and sometimes they act like they don't know anything about it. There is also a big theory about Master Fu's mistake with the peacock miraculous and Nooroo the Kwami. He said that once he made a mistake with losing the miraculous. That miraculous cannot be Nooroo because Gabriel never knew about any other miraculous, only the peacock which Emilie Agreste had. And clearly Master Fu knows who he gives the miraculous to and he gave the peacock miraculous to Emilie Agreste.

Well, think about it! The creator has actually made some of the characters smarter! Tikki is more exciteable and confident while Marinette is less so. So I think that not only do they fuse physically the superheroes get a bit of their Kwami’s personality as well when they transform. The same goes for Adrien. In his normal form he is more laid back and Plagg is more energetic and ‘flirtatious’ (I mean he sure is in love with his cheese) and when he becomes Chat/Cat Noir their two personalities fuse. Because the Miraculous have opposite personalities as their holders. Tiki was always very confident in herself when Mari was very coi and not confident. When Mari turns into ladybug she adopts Tiki’s personality and changes. Just like Plagg is laid back but Adrien is very responsible, when the two merge to create Chat Noir Adrien adopts parts of Plagg’s personality. When it comes to Gabriel and Nuro, Nuro understands and can comprehend people’s feeling very easily while Gabriel can’t comprehend when he has hurt someone he cared about based off his actions. When Gabriel merges with Nuro he is able to understand when someone is going through grief and why they are emotionally in pain, and even though he uses those emotions for evil he is more understanding of people.

The only reason she was able to go through with it was because of the other people in her life, along with her kitty. As for Chat Noir, I can't remember if it's mentioned or not but I've seen a lot of people discussing how Adrien is the actual persona for the character and Chat Noir is his real personality. I know in the origins episodes, it shows that he fell head over heels in love with Ladybug after seeing her be super confident, kick ass, and take names: which is why he constantly flirts with her. Adrien being the persona makes sense because he's always trying to live up to his dad's expectations, he feels trapped and lonely, unloved. But as Chat Noir, he doesn't have to worry about all that and he can just be him. His father would never approve of the crude way Chat Noir speaks after all. There are a couple episodes where Adrien is talking and a bit of Chat Noir slips out. He's almost slipped up multiple times as Adrien and called Ladybug "milady." There are also times when he's interacting with Mari and he says something that is just soooooo Chat Noir, winks, then plays it off with a "just kidding." I personally prefer the Chat Noir personality to the Adrien personality honestly. I find Adrien to be kind of bland whereas Chat Noir is funny, witty, punny, and has a great character all around which is pretty funny considering they're the same person. I hope and pray for the day that Adrien will be able to fully embrace the Chat Noir personality because it does seem much more real to me. Plus let's be real, Chat Noir is a definite cinnamon roll. Maybe not cinnamon bun status, but definitely cinnamon roll.

When some reporter saw chloe dressed up as ladybug they thought she was actually ladybug until Sabrina said her name then they automatically came to the conclusion that she was not ladybug (dunno why) even if it was so obvious that it was not her even without her name! I mean she is blond, marinette has dark hair and please nothing on their faces are the same :] So i think the magical option is the logicer i always thought it was some magic~ Even if they are indeed a little bit stupid XD remember when adrien/cat noir thought chloe was ladybug (because of what alya said) even if he saved chloe with ladybug like 5 episode ago? XD Tell me cat noir how is this even possible? XD So yeah magggggic~ ☆0☆

Dont forget the fact that if people don't expect it or dont want to see it their brain can overlook it easily. E.I. chloe might have had suspicions about marrinette but can't believe that she is ladybug beacuase she doesn't want to believe her idol is the girl she bullies at school or how marinette doesn't believe that chat noir and Adrian are the same because she LIKES Adrian but thinks Chat is a flirt. Our human minds can overlook things like that, besides you need to realise that they are living the adventures and when you are outside the action things are much clearer. Plus, in the universe, there may be more fights than shown- so the heroes could have had some close calls we don't know about.

I believe after they both really noticed each other's personalities, they started noticing each other's looks.

The Magic Theory might be correct, because going back to the Lady Wi-Fi Episode, Lady Wi-Fi (Ayla) was gonna reveal who Ladybug really was by removing her mask, although she did try, she was unable to. The mask couldn’t get off Her face Ayla asked “How is this possible, why isn’t it coming off?” Ladybug answered with “Because it’s magical.”

I believe it is magic that keeps their identities hidden. Anyone remember in Lady Wifi, Alya tried to pull off Ladybug's mask, but couldn't because Lady said it was kept on by magic? It's probably the same magic that keeps their identities a secret. ... Or everyone is too distracted by the red and black costume Ladybug wears and completely black costume that Cat wears. Either one.

KittyTheGamer293 Yeah, I know that now. XD But! I think there is also one more person who knows Marinette is actually Ladybug... Nathaneal. Remember in the episode Evillustrator, the last shot was zoomed in up on Nate's drawing pad, and in place of where Nathaneal drew Marinette hugging him, he drew Ladybug! With hearts under it as well. He even crossed out the drawings in which he saved her. I think this means he knows that Mari is Ladybug, and that she can take care of herself.. There's a theory somewhere on youtube, I forgot who by, but they explain that Nate knows because he has photographic memory, (like how in Roger Cop he drew and memorized Chloe's bracelet exactly even after seeing it for a second) and now he can recognize Marinette even past the mask... Wow, that was a long comment.

Personally, I've always had a theory that with most magic based transformation heroes like the Sailor Senshi, Guardians of the Vale, and the Miraculous holders is that their powers just have a built in perception filters. But the only show to ever confirm something like this outright was Powerpuff Girls Z.

My theory: Because in one of the episodes Adrien meets that fencing girl who (by using common sense) he thinks is ladybug, that made me rage. It was a relief when Chat battled against her with Ladybug, though. He also had the pain in his left leg while being both Adrien and Chat, which should have given it away for Ladybug- If he had not shown his pain as discretely. Have I been the only person to notice Adrien's slight change in hair color and style? As Adrien, he has lighter, platinum blond hair that is shorter than Chat's, and Chat's hair is darker and a bit longer- almost shoulder length. Showing that Chat has a more sassy and sexy attitude and Adrien is mellow and polite, their personalities do make a huge difference. Same with Ladyug, although she looks the same physically as ladybug except with more confidence. She has a bit more of a dainty but strong walk as Ladybug too, and I think her stance is a big part of why even Alia can't find out who she is. Marinette is not confident when it comes to talking to people- Just think about how the hell she'd be able to fight crime with Chat if she new his identity. It's not that the Miraculous have to prevent the hero and heroine from shedding their secret, it's that they both know what'd happen if Marinette knew Chat as the same person she feels stressed around.
