Hi, a VOR does never give a range information. In reality VORs are often paired with a DME, which is a seperate device or with a TACAN (is then called VORTAC). Then you have both informations, azimuth and distance. The DME receiver in civil aircraft can use the distance information of TACAN stations (but not the azimuth) because they are both in the same frequency band and work by using the same principle.

On the left site of the Cockpit you can tune the volume for the ILS/TCN and also the radios etc. I haven't test it but i think that you hear the code when you tune up. I often heard that ,, beep beep beep" but never translated into letters since i don't know that it is a code.
