Miranda and Prospero

Prospero and his/her daughter Miranda Shakespeare’s last play The Tempest is a fantasy display of magical powers, light-hearted comedy, political absolution, and betraying monarchy. What can a wealthy powerful man/ woman rely on when betrayed by his/her brother and the king? Magic? Prospero, the original Duke of Milan, was scorned by the king and his own brother to take his position. He was left to die in an old ship in a tempestuous storm, with his daughter, just a child. He is bashed by the storm on an island, where he saves a heavenly creature that was trapped in a tree. As a reward, the Angel Ariel helps him overcome his limitations, endows him with magical powers, and Prospero is honored and valued by supernatural beings. He plots revenge to the king and his brother and succeeds, by giving them a taste of their own medicine, The Tempest. His daughter Miranda did not know of what had happened until the day of The Tempest demolishing the King’s ship when she realizes that her father had caused the event by his powers. Miranda says to her father: “If by your art, my dearest father, you have Put the wild waters in this roar, allay them. The sky, it seems, would pour down stinking pitch, But that the sea, mounting to th' welkin’s cheek, Dashes the fire out.” She begs her father to calm the waters if he has used his magic powers to cause the storm. Prospero then tells Miranda, about their true identities, and their previous struggles in The Tempestuous water. They watch the ship gets wrecked by the storm, and Miranda realizes it is her father’s doing. She is not happy about it and when Ferdinand the King’s son gets captured by Prospero, she feels compassion and tries to help him. She and Ferdinand fall for each other and plan on getting married, but her father does not agree. Prospero cares about his daughter and eventually approves of her love and union with Ferdinand. With the help of Ariel the angel he freed, he achieves the justice he desired, his honor, and political power. Cyrine Zaibi on her recent review adds, “It is a play situated between ocean and land, between dream and reality, between magic and realism, between the New World and the Old.” She finds the inspiration between the contrast of two realities in this play. The ocean and the land, magic, and realism. The love of Prospero for his/her daughter Miranda leads to forgiveness and resolution. Even though Prospero had planned an act of tempestuous revenge, excepting his daughter’s happiness and love for Ferdinand, he soothes his anger and expels the curses. The relationship between Prospero and Miranda brings out true feelings, intentions, and key elements of the play.
