The only thing I dislike about the Mirandas is that their shuttlebays are misnumbered. On ships, even-numbered stuff goes on the port side while odd-numbered stuff goes on the starboard side.

Miranda Class: No, you hold my beer, Oby. I have three times your crew capacity, and I can actually fight back before dying heroically. c Oberth Class: It was ONE TIME! Geez! I get stuck with a Captain too slow to raise shields the second something smells wrong and that's all everyone remembers. I'm a science ship, not a gunslinger. Miranda Class: Hey, hey now! It's not like that. Even Kirk got caught out like that. He barely survived! Not your fault. Oberth Class: Thanks Mir. I still get a lot of grief even after serving the fleet over a century. It hurts. Miranda Class: It's those Nova Class punks, isn't it? Like they've ever done anything but violate the prime directive and get beat up by an Intrepid. Never mind them. You've done plenty of solid work for the fleet. Oberth Class: It's nice to be acknowledged. Miranda: I mean, you've even saved the day a couple times. Like that time when your crew encountered a pathogen that got the Enterprise crew all drunk and horny? They were gonna be toast until you took the hit from that Stellar fragment for them. Oberth Class: Yeah! But seriously, freakin' pathogens and diseases. We're only as good as whoever programmed the bio-filters, am I right? Miranda: Preaching to the choir man.

For those who many not have noticed, there's actually a nod to the Miranda class in the Battle of the Binary Stars. The Europa's registry contains the same numbers, and it seems fitting, given the ship looks just like a reworked Miranda.
@eXcommunicate1979

You say kit bashed, I say standard operating procedure. ;) It always seemed off to me that every ship in a class would look identical. This is never the way real world navies operate, so I'd imagine you'd see a lot of variation within each class of starship in "reality." Or you'd even have "production runs" of each variant or even different configurations produced by different shipyards. The Antares Shipyard Galaxy Class ship would be its own variant from the Utopia Planitia Yards Galaxy variant. etc. That's my head canon anyway.
@Riceball01
@Riceball01 5 жыл бұрын
But every major variant within a ship class is more or less the same. Using the Arleigh Burke class as an example, all Flight 1 ships are going to look pretty much the same and there won't be any major changes in appearance until you get to the Flight 2s and even then it might be more internal than external. The only class of ship, that I'm aware of, that underwent very noticeable changes between flight are the LA class subs with the 688Is moving the dive planes from the sail down where they were on the Flight 1s and 2s, down to near the bow. The ships in Trek tend to vary hugely within a class, so much so that it could be argued that they're really an entirely different class derived from an older class much like how the Ticonderoga class cruisers were based on the hull of the older Spruance class destroyer.
@henrynorcrossii3363

I imagined that Star Fleet continued to produce the Constitution Class after the initial 12, 13, or 14 that were originally produced, and only the originals were more or less identical due to being produced at the same time. That's why Kirk could truthfully say that there were only 12 like her in the fleet. All of the originals probably received identical or near identical refits to keep their technology up to date. With one of the first major refits coming after the 2nd pilot episode. I've also thought that the out of sync registry numbers were either legacy ships or refit from older ships that were badly damaged, and instead of returning them to original configuration they were upgraded to Constitution Class. If you look at the original Star Fleet Technical Manual most of the ships had used, at least outwardly, identical saucer sections. The saucer sections looked like they were mass produced for use on several different classes of starships.

by DS9 i would have imagined that automation would have reduced the Miranda's crew complement to around 100. the ship has always fulfilled the support role in my opinion and the fact that it was so versatile means it's no surprise to me that it lasted so long on the frontline. the torpedoes and heavy phasers would make it an ideal support ship, a bit like the Flower Class corvette during WW2.

I see them similar how the British used to make a battlecruiser variant of the battleship class for the design they were running through production. Miranda battlecruiser to Constitution class and Nebula battlecruiser to the Galaxy class. But being so useful and versatile the Miranda keeps getting reused in maybe a downgraded role. And similar to how jet-fighters like the A-10 or F-16 still being useful enough they are willing to keep them in service for 70+ years, upgrade new electronics and weapons, but the base form still works, even if the F-22 or F-35 are more modern.

I've sometimes wondered why Starfleet doesn't take the modular approach more. Take a base frame that's okish all around. Need a cargo ship? Slap on a cargo bay. Deep space assignment? Slap on some extra engineer and repair facilities. Science? Slap on a science module. Etc etc. Plus, you also get the benefit of not sending your weak science ships into battle during war. Just recall and swap with a tactical module.

I read your comment as: This ship, without the roll bar, is a light cruiser. But *with* the roll bar (ie: extra weapons etc.) it becomes a frigate. That doesn't compute. Hull classifications are based on role, power, size, etc. among other things (as in the real world.) Therefore: corvette > frigate > destroyer > cruiser > battleship You *could* argue that if it were a light cruiser w/o the bar the addition of one would make it a heavy cruiser. But the hull can't just skip a classification level.

I think that Star Fleet has continued production of the Miranda class well past the TNG, DS9, and VOY time. Just like it seems that they were still producing the refit Constitution class of ships. Since I would find it to be very unlikely that they would pull 70 year old ships out of mothballs to fight the Borg at Wolf 359. Finding enough crew, resupplying, and rearming those vessels would have been an astronomical challenge for Star Fleet to do in the short time they had to get ready. Not to mention the training necessary to teach people how to operate them.

It doesn't use a directional deflector because of its compact shape. Instead, the Miranda uses short range Deflector Shields, more akin to how the Klingon and Romulan ships operate. Ultimately, deflectors were brought back for aesthetic reasons than any hard in-universe lore, since if directional deflector screens were necessary for space travel, there are many more violations of that requirement from canonical ships than there are those that adhere to it.

Re-booting your own show now??? Nah... just kidding! Like your work. Really, I do. Keep it up. Re-booted or no (not something I'd ever tell Abrams or Kurtzman, so Kudos to you two).

If they remaster DS9 with new visuals, they can get rid of the Yeager Class! There, I said it!

These are a destroyer. They are armed to the teeth and very squishy. They arent meant to be front line in current military doctrine

Maybe they just hadn't received upgraded shields because they were more heavily armed. It could also be that the weapons used too much of the available power.

The Enterprise had also been heavily damaged at the time. Plus with the smaller mass and what looks like the same impulse drive on both it might be faster using sublight speeds.

I've had quite a few issues with Eaglemoss. First 4 shipments were broken ships, badly packed in the box. Only had a few of those large bubble packs that didn't keep the model box from sliding all over the place. Tried working things out with them and each time they failed to come through. Haven't been really impressed with their customer service or package handling. Great looking models, bad service.

I watched Star Trek in 1966 at 16 years old. Miranda Class? In engineering form follows function, what function? If it wasn’t for George Lucas Hollywood won’t have cared to bring Star Trek back. After 1977 there was a science fiction gold rush in California. Money drives Star ships not artistic feeling.

Possibly the second most recognized & iconic ST Fed ship behind the Constitution class. Sometimes I "think" I even like the Miranda over the Constitution.

Az Mystiere well if you look at official information Star Trek discovery takes place during 2256-2257. Now officially Miranda class entered service around 2260. How come when you look at the ships they look nothing like ships of ENT and TOS? And before you start rambling on how they have to modernise and it’s not 1960s anymore I get it’s modern times and they had to modernise but they could have done to Miranda and other ship new classes like they did to modernised enterprise in discovery. I just think discovery is fake ass crap and not Star Trek.

@@mlasrb Right to your opinion, but the Miranda class exists in whatever form... as does the Daedulus class... and now Discovery goes to the 31st century, we will never need to see what they would look like modernized....

Az Mystiere 33nd century not 31st. 2258 + 950 years as stated in show is 3208 which is maybe 150-200 years after Daniels. They will still have to be careful of canon because Daniels exist in 31st century and there is time graveling ship uss relativity from 27th century so they better be careful about that part of canon and not mess up like this did with discovery in first and second season of the show the rest of trek canon.
