When my daughter went to see wedding dresses, she wanted just her and me. It was the most emotionally wonderful time of my life. We were the only opinions that mattered to her. The dress she ultimately decided was "the one" brought tears of joy. She was a beautiful bride.

the meaning has shifted in modern day. It really means just going to the courthouse without the hullaballoo of a reception or wedding. Sometimes it referrers to a small courthouse wedding. But it doesn't really mean to do it secretly anymore. Kind of like the term gay used to mean happy or queer used to mean weird. Where as now both refer to the LGBT community.

Why is that weird? She and her husband decided that they want to travel to get married and it just be the two of them. The term "eloping" now doesn't mean that it has to be a spur of the moment. It just means an intimate ceremony at a nice location.

Why the fuck are you asking for their opinion if they don’t even get to see you walk down the aisle in the dress?? It’s so stupid. Also it’s annoying how you invite so many people to help pick a dress because ultimately peer pressure will make you pick something you probably don’t want.
