Vocals & arrangement by Farya Faraji, lyra by Dimitrios Dallas. This is the earliest known English secular song, dated to the 1200's. The instrumentation features a bowed rebec, harps, and a gittern, following the heterophonic and polyphonic practices of the Middle-Ages. The specific melody heard here is based on Ian Pittaway's reconstruction and correction of the more commonly circulated melody. I invite you to watch his original video and read his article detailing his reconstruction process: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHnLqqR6raagjqc earlymusicmuse.com/mirie-it-is-while-sumer-ilast/ Lyrics in Middle-English: Mirie it is while sumer ilast ƿið fugheles song. oc nu necheð ƿindes blast and ƿeder strong. Ey ey ƿhat þis nicht is long. And ich ƿið ƿel michel wrong soregh and murne and fast. Merry it is while summer lasts With fowl’s song. But now nears the wind’s blast And weather strong. Oh, oh! How this night is long! And I with very much wrong Sorrow and mourn and fast.

Feeling the cold here myself on the Mayo/Roscommon border, with a big storm coming tonight! Can relate to our 1200 English singers, as I try to stay warm in a hundred year old stone cottage, hoping the roof stays on. -But now nears the wind’s blast -And weather strong. -Oh, oh! How this night is long! -And I with very much wrong -Sorrow and mourn and fast.

Interesting. I just listened to the Ian Pittaway version, then went back and listened to your original version of this song, and now this one new rendition again. It's interesting seeing that evolution in progress there. Most noticeable is the difference in timing of the notes, and especially that pronunciation of "it is", with holding it halfway for a little bit (I have no idea how to explain it, I'm not a music theorist). I still like both versions.
@faryafaraji2 ай бұрын
For the sake of clarification, it should be noted that my arrangement here isn't meant to be an update on Pittaway's. Both versions are equally valid renditions of how the song would have sounded then. Medieval music had no concept of a song being arranged and performed in one specific manner; every time a song was performed, it was performed differently. Only with the advent of written scores in the post-Viennese Classical era do songs become locked into a specific arrangement that becomes its canonical one. The song would have been performed in its time with the same performance diversity found between mine and Pittaway's version. The only thing all those performances would have had in common was the main written melody; which Pittaway seems to have reconstructed succesfully.
