What I love about your honest opinion is for a complete newcomer like myself, on a very low budget - any expenditure on a tool is an investment. I can’t afford to buy something that doesn’t work. This review doesn’t rule out this sander but it does give depth to why some are cautious to recommend. Thank you for sharing!

Hi Peter. I would like to see how this sander compares on its principle marketing claim, namely it's zero dust claim. So get your bin bag and gaffer tape out for a follow-up! 😀 I've had a loan of one for a weekend and I was impressed and concerned in equal measure. The best performance was from the abranet sheets but when I went and bought some to replace what I used I was staggered at the cost and they are very fragile when sanding edges. Something Keith mentioned. With standard sheets the dust collection wants as strong and left alone questioning the value. I hadn't considered the 5" 5mm stroke advantage but then I'm not sanding for a living. And now I'm entering the professional furniture making business I'm still inclined to plump for festool as my investment for finishing. Anyway as always great video. 👍
@10MinuteWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Karl! Yes, I suspect t the ‘dustless sanding’ claim is only with abranet , and probably their own extractors as well. I’m not a huge fan of abranet either, for those reasons and a few others.👍👍

Hi Peter, Interesting video, thanks. I have been using the 5mm stroke CEROS for a few years now (as a keen amateur furniture maker and DIYer). I have not had any reliability issues thus far, so can’t really comment on that or on the support from Mirka. In use I really like it. The key issues for me are handling, low vibration, performance, and dust collection. I have not found anything else that can match the handling; the low weight and the compactness makes it feel more like an extension to your hand, and that makes for great control. Easy to use in any orientation and to balance on edges. Previously I would not have tried to use a RoS for knocking the arises of a board, but with the CEROS its easy and feels natural . As you said, far less top heavy than anything else out there - I can see why folks used to using air sanders in body shops like them so much! The paddle control is different from a trigger, but personally I got used to that quickly enough. The variable speed control using the paddle is less useful, so generally I find myself setting the max speed on the buttons, and just using the paddle “full on” most of the time. Vibration is very low - although not zero - but masses more comfortable than the Bosch RoS I used previously. Performance really shines - loads of power, and if you stick a 40 grit disk on, it will eat though rough finish removal etc really well, while also giving a very fine finish on higher grits. I have never regretted getting the 5mm orbit version instead of one of the “finer” ones. Dust collection with mesh abrasives is excellent (I have not tried any other than the Abronet ones - are there others you prefer?). With the normal “punched” sheets its not quite as good, but still very good IME. (buying a 30’ pack of 32mm dust hose from Rutlands is also a great way to make up long extraction hoses to hand tools with a slightly less cumbersome hose, without forking out the silly money Mirka want for their slim hoses!) Vibration is also very low which again I really like if doing a long session. I use a 5” pad on mine, and have recently bought a 6” one for it (apparently the 3”, 5”, and 6” pads are all interchangeable between the various machines). I just need to find where I left the pad change spanner now :-) Kind regards, John

Hi John and thanks for the detailed reply. Yes, as I say it’s a really nice sander, and I’m glad your is working well for you. Fantastic review, felt well balanced. I've got the Festool you mentioned and I while the price brings a tear to your eye (in my experience) you only pay it once. I tried out the Mirka and, I have to admit, it felt better in the hand but the lack of compatibility with other kit , even down to the power cord, just puts me off. The backing pad breaking the speed controller is complete bull. If I'm paying that sort of money for a sander I expect it to survive everything short of catching fire. Certainly day to day use shouldn't ever be a problem. Dust collection wise I honestly didn't see anything to separate the Festool and the Mirka. I'm pretty sure when I sand with the Festool my workshop air actually gets cleaner.

This is such a well and balanced opinion, I think that with those cases and the comment from the manufacturer is a no-no solution for my end. I’m a Hobbyist and having a premium product, which should outlast my needs is the reason I go premium. Professionals IMHO do it for longevity and features, how quickly or how best do I finish this job, and if the end result is a guessing game and been out of action for a week or two on a premium product, then this is not neither I premium nor should anyone invest in a product the company is going you “IMHO” BS about their clearly documented failures from others. Well said Peter, love you factual balance when discussing these products and the fact you put them through the pases, makes it even more credible, certainly to the way Mirra responded to those failures.

The rotex is excellent when you want brute strength.

Pro carpenter and have thankfully no problems with the Deros after 3 years moderate use. I use a traditional $100 palm sander outside when dust collection isn’t critical so the Deros gets a break. I love it. The ability to sand spackle over your head dust free and also use it as a polisher on vechicles makes the cost easier to swallow. The 5mm stroke was a major reason for choosing it. I also have the both size pads. 5mm stroke with 80g screens cuts pretty fast. Not as fast as a rotax but its good enough for most tasks. I could see how a damaged pad could quickly ruin the bearings but not sure it would affect the ESC unless it was really bad. Motor controller failures are usually from heat, bad components in manufacturing or poor design. That part should be less than $50 to the consumer. Hopefully a new version of the ESC fixes the issue. So far no problems here.

I'm a Festool guy but NOT for sanders. I have 5 Mirka sanders, a Ceros, 2 Deros, a Deos detail sander and a 3" Air sander. There Abranet paper along with their excellent sanders are the best in my book. Dust collection, balance, center of gravity, (that's why the design like the body shop air sanders) create a smooth sanding experience for me. No jumps and jitters like the Festool and other sanders I have owned in the past. I love the speed control flap and the ability to SET the max speed of the flap control with the electronics. I have never had a problem with any of my Mirka sanders. Quite frankly love honest reviews that point out pros and cons, but clearly you have an anti Mirka bias for some reason. Yes I am a Mirka defender, but because of my excellent experience with their sanders.

I've had my Deros for just over 3 years and up until yesterday I've been very pleased with it. What happened yesterday I hear you ask; I had been using my Festool DTS400 to sand the front door to re-coat it with some Sikkens woodstain and I kept getting little trails which I put down to clogging of the Granat pad so I switched to Granat net, increased the speed and slowed the feed, it did help but I thought that I would use my Deros with Abranet on it. Plugging it in nothing happened hmmm, strange. Finished the door off by hand and then started investigating. Fuse and lead ok, more lateral movement than I thought was OK but it did turn freely. Blew the ring main circuit breaker trying it again. Spoke to Mirka repair technician who told me how to check it. Wires still attached to motor ok, 4.1 ohms on the 3 connectors on the left side so ok. I'm guessing (and will confirm it this afternoon) that it needs a new speed controller at a cost all up of around £200 with only a 3 month warranty - very very disappointed! I'm a DIYer and I have used it a reasonable amount in the 3 years but nowhere near what a tradesman would do. I justified the expense against having the hall stairs and landing replastered vs sanding down but with a speed controller costing virtually half the price of a new sander - that sucks! I'm now thinking of getting a Festool which are even more expensive but I'll wait to see if Black Friday brings any reductions.

This year, the bearing on the first one had to be replaced. Other than that, I'm very impressed they still keep on going. No other repairs in all those years renovating 4 houses from basement to roof, sanding EVERY plaster and dry wall .. Abranet is amazing for those type of jobs. Very little to absolutely no dust, very long life. I've run this thing 2-3 hours non-stop countless times. Very light and ergonomic. One of the first brushless sanders if I remember right. You’re on a roll, hitting tools that I’m planning to buy this year. Been wanting to upgrade from my DeWalt cordless random orbit sander to something with better dust collection and less vibration. Heard lots of rave reviews about the Mirka and it seemed like the perfect tool. Hadn’t heard about all the issues until your video, so really appreciate the info. I know every tool will have its complaints and so I try to build a “tool profile” from the negative comments that tries to adjust the feedback based on my impression of how justified the complaint is as well as the user’s experience level based on the way they write about the issue. I can say that just from the comments in this video, there’s enough there to make me believe that these are not issues caused by improper use of the tool, nor are they issues that are blown way out of proportion, and it’s plenty enough for me to say that I’d only buy this unit if I could get a screaming deal on it, but most likely will have to choose something else that has a better reliability track record. And like others have said, whenever I see a manufacturer intentionally choose to remake a standard off-the-shelf part into a proprietary part that doesn’t provide nearly “must have” functionality, it really turns me off to the whole brand, so I really appreciate you calling out the power plug. That’s pretty inexcusable to me.

For years we have used the festool air sanders, and they really are the best I have used in conjunction with the festool air extractor. They do the job and rarely go wrong, and that is using them on solid wood 99% of the time. I see the mirka ones more as a finish sander for as you say de-nibbing not really a general purpose one for flushing solid timber like oak down. I do own a makita version of the festool rotex and that works remarkably well when used in conjunction with the correct extractor. I am a big fan of mirka gold discs though, very few on the market as good and with the staying power. The backing pad on all of these sanders is important and I think more people should buy the pad saver to use between the disc and the pad and you will find they last a lot longer. You do need to be careful with the more heavy festool sanders that you do not drop them as while they are very robust it can cause damage to the pad and make them appear that they are out of balance when it is usually a damaged pad.

And here lies the rub. I'm a Festool guy and have considered this sander a few times over the years and reliability is the primary concern, and the paddle being a secondary concern. I can probably adapt to the paddle but reliability is important. Here in the states the current prices are ETS EC 150/5 $539 + tax. Deros $663 +tax. The 5" pad for the Deros is an added cost that makes it $703 + tax. The ETS EC 150/5 is back ordered with some pretty long lead times at the moment. I do have an order in for the ETS EC but the Deros is easily found and I could have it in hand next week. I am not a hobby guy I expect these tools to make me money, but all my Festool sanders have lasted well past warranty and have never been sent in for repair. Which leaves me thinking stick with what I know works, or roll the dice and hope i'm in the lucky group of Deros owners. I do wonder if any well used Deros can make it 7-10 years though. The app is a let down. Not even the basics of lifetime tool use hours counted? Thanks for posting the vid as i'm on the fence.

When Mirka first announced the Bluetooth feature I made it clear to them it was ridiculous they had not implemented anything worthwhile like "security" which will disable the tool in the same/similar way that Milwaukee ONE-KEY does, making the tool worthless if stolen. Mirka seemed to have added Bluetooth without bothering to implement anything of use (almost more of a fashionable addition), Milwaukee ONE-KEY lets you actually configure the tool such as speeds/torque etc.

I agree about the paddle being a bit of an annoyance, you have be careful where you put the tool down, what it's next to and so on, I've even had a small bit of thin ply fall over and set the tool away on the bench. That said it's from an automotive pedigree where the paddle switch makes extended sanding sessions easier and more intuitive. I've run it's forerunner, the Ceros, for several years without issue (they are still available). The most impressive thing about them is the dust extraction when using the correct Mirka mesh disks, even with plaster. Not come across any reliability issues other than a friend who had one burst into flames in his hand whilst up a ladder!

When the pad gets worn, it will change the pads resonant frequency (i.e. the frequency with the highest oscillation amplitude), which in turn could (perhaps) make the motor work harder to counteract the unwanted oscillations. However, if they already have a gyro/accelerometer built into the device to sell vibration metrics, then there is no reason the same sensor(s) could not be used to detect a worn pad which is causing excessive wear, and alert the user. It sounds like this is a case of bad thermal design... In most (high-end) electronics, it is standard to use a thermal watchdog sensor on the motor-controller board and the motor itself, so that the machine will turn itself off in case of excessive heat buildup. Completely unrelated but brushless DC motors is a marketing term for small three-phase AC motors. The “electronics speed controller” is a three-phase converter.
@10MinuteWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yes, I understand why a worm pad may impact the speed controller - just that like yourself, I’d expect them to have designed a system that would accommodate it. Didn’t know about the 3-phase thing though - very interesting, thanks! 👍

Really like my Mirka. I think one of the problems is that the power lead needs to be pushed in really well. It can still work half way pushed in (mostly), and I think that throws people. They think it is the sander that is intermittant, but it really just the power lead. For me, having used all makes and models in high end furniture making shops, I prefer the Mirka Deros. I got mine from Axminster as a refurbished, for the 'problem' I just mentioned. It is not intermittent-just a simple connection! I saved a fortune, and it is great.

Had mine for over 6 years, love it. I find the paddle and hand shaped top very comfortable. If sanding walls and ceilings, it’s so light and comfy, that alone makes it a great buy. For the same usability Festool, it’d be 2 sanders approaching 1k compared to 400 for this. I have a Metabo 450 that I use for heavy stuff, the aDeros for everything else. My only issue is this nagging feeling it will pack in as others have and that isn’t good for a premium product. I’m not a Festool addict, I buy their gear if good, others if better. I have the Mafell track saw as think it’s better than Festool, the Deros as prefer it to Festool, the Domino because it’s fab etc etc. Dust extraction is superb, for that alone, it’s worth it
@10MinuteWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
Excellent, glad to hear it’s working well for you. I really like it too, small, light quiet, great dust collection (expected at this level tbh) fantastic that you can use 150/125 pads. But as you say, there’s this nagging doubt about longevity, and that’s not what you want at this kind of price point. 👍👍
@scoonie99664 жыл бұрын
You like what you like so it’s hard to change tools when something is working and you’re already having success, regardless of how “great” ppl say it is. Unless you have an issue/need with your current setup, brand, name and functions will be a non-factor, especially when the current festool is the same price. Human nature and needs. I use to use your basic dewalt orbit and thought it did fine until I had an issue/need (vibrations) then I moved to a Bosch ROS65VC and thought that was amazing till I had an issue/need (weight and ergonomics for fine finishing cabinets and edges was tedious). Then the Mirka deros came along and I absolutely love it. Light weight, balanced, great dust collection. I moved and transitioned b/c I had issue and a “need”. I needed to upgrade so transitioning was easy. I have no issues with Mirka b/c it’s the best of what I’ve had or experienced and have no issues. If I were to switch to a festool, I’d probably find little nuances too, just because I enjoy my Mirka and it’s working and there is no “need” to change. So Peter’s review is 100% legitimate and agreeable. He’s not saying Mirka is bad, there just wasn’t a “need” to switch from his current setup/tools so I totally understand his return. Keep it up Peter, love your work 🙌

I just received yesterday a brand new one, the no load vibrations increase dramatically after attaching the sanding paper. I guess their balance is very sensitive, a used pad/ sanding paper will disturb it :) this happens just at the two highest speed setting, but definitely feels unhealthy for the tool as it also gets warm fast, without sanding, after 30seconds it feels really warm. I will not take the long time bet and will just send it back.
@vdis Жыл бұрын
The DEROS has weights underneath the disk that needs adjusting when you use interface pads or heavier sanding paper. There is a video from GO Industrial explaining the details. Search for "Mirka Deros Installing Weights Explained".

@@vdis Thanks for the tip! That makes sense, just maybe Mirka could add this in the box, as for me it was scary vibration and sent it back. I was afraid to hit some lengthy warranty back and forth as some other woodworkers.

I brought one a few years ago and returned it. There's a vibration setting inside you can change via a nut but they locktite it so you cant change it. Hi Peter, just thought I'd share my postive experinces with the Deros, had mine about 2 years now with no issues and great results. I favour gripping the tool from the top, using my palm to control the flappy paddle, rather than my thumb like you were showing in the video. Have you tried that? I find you have much better control that way. I know what you mean about uncertainty though, I'll admit after seeing Matt and Keith's issues it has got me worried about reaching the end of my 3 year warranty! Thanks for another great video.

Hi Peter, yes I've got one too and yes it had to go back after I think the first project I used it on! I was told there was a problem with the motor as well. Thankfully the after sales experience was good. I'm not a lover of the thing to be honest, I don't like the flappy paddle, always seems to get in the way, I'm sure this could be resolved with a thumb operated switch on both sides of the main stem. The speed buttons are difficult to press and I don't see the need for an on/off switch in the handle either. The finish is ok, dust extraction very good but there's more vibration than I was expecting, I've been told to keep an eye on the bolts that hold the plates on and to be aware of it going out of balance making the vibration worse. The whole thing is expensive , so are any add ons, would I buy one again ? Juries still out on that one !

Wow! I was hoping in the future to get one of these and now I'm, honestly, scared. When doing my complete house renovation just about everything I bought - usually top middle tier or top tier (tools and appliances) - broke down shortly after purchase and had to go back. These were items ranging from $100 to $6000. Each time, from the company I heard: gee, you've been unlucky, these hardly ever come back. One thing about buying quality is that at least you get excellent customer service (unless you are buying Hammer/Felder - don't get me started). Must say that my Bosch tools have never let me down and are still going strong. I wanted a deros because of all the features you mention, plus the abranet, plus, even for a woman I have very small hands and so many tools are designed with guys in mind. With my previous bad luck I'm sure if I bought this I'd be screwed.

Have a Deros with no problems, nearly always use a pad saver. On my list to change to a Neutrik 20A connector, which I've done on all the decent non Plugit tools. Expect to put them on the Festools too at some point too. I think the Deros transitions well if you've done any car bodywork with a DA, the press to turn off is a slight pain agreed, and the non-standard plug is stupid, and the cable is horrible and poor quality. 😱 gona change that plug next visit the workshop.

I admit that it is 150mm, not 125, but I like my Metabo SXE250. This is switchable between 2.5mm and 6mm. With Abranet, it has great dust collection. It does have the weight of a housebrick, but that is good on large horizontal surfaces as you can simply guide it with one finger.

Dont know if motor problems are only in export units. Here in finland where they are made, i've used several mirka deros/ceros sanders literally thousands of hours professionally in the last 10 years and no motor problems. Most typical problem is the cord breaks near the sander where it wiggles and rounds itself tightly with the dusthose. One unit had a bearing problem after 6 month of use almost a 8 hour use per day. And yes bearings go bad after 3 year extensive use but thats normal when the machine has hunderds of hours of use. Perhaps issue in new mirkas are some bad part which they didnt use before also? Just wanted to share my experience.

Thank you! The issues go back many years - there’s a thread in the Festool Owners Group board about them dating back to 2014 or so, but all from outside Finland, I think, so you may be right about the export units. I bought the mirka it was more than €200 cheaper than the 5mm Festool I have a lot of festool sanders so I was kind of curious too. It works fine so no worries until it doesn't. Anyway to sand off paint I found the mirkas Iridium paper to be in a class of its own, beware that is rather course for its grit size. And it does not work so well with my rotex since the rotex rotates and smear the paint on the paper and not like the 5mm that rolls it up to small balls like gravel that falls straight to the ground. Now i got Iridium for all my sanders, I really dislike the net. For wood or hard paint I still use granat. One thing thou, Bluetooth on a grinder how useful is that? And then you need a special 24mm key to change pad when a tool-free solution would be golden, that's just mind boggling weird priorities. Oh and mirkas sleeve for the vacumhose is brilliant and lot cheaper alternative to hoses with cables in them. I prefer the sleeve.

I don't know, I'm afraid, but anecdotally the guys I know who have/had the original Ceros have been happy with it, and no issues AFAIK. 👍

The sanders are WAY to expensive as the quality is not on par with the purchase price. Sold mine (it had a 2.5 mm stroke) and had the same speed break problem...while being brand new - never been used. Mirka should solve these problem(s) !

Its a personal thing . I have the 5" Ceros and love it. The vibration free brushless motor and abranet system are a huge step forward ?
@10MinuteWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
I agree. Never liked abranet much, and I already have vibration free and virtually dustless sanding with the festool stuff. Brushless is nice, as is the size & weight, and it’s a really nice sander. 🤷♂️👍

I am not in the market for one, but the "flappy paddle" would be a definite turn off, I would consider it a safety issue. Interestingly, I have a couple of air tools with similar speed control handles, one has a safety lock device and the other does not. I have formed the habit of disconnection the one that does not when it is not in my hand.

Thanks! Yes, I think Kit’s just a matter of conditioning yourself to using it. Having revisited it, I’m much more comfortable with it now I’m expecting it. 👍👍

If you used it for a month I think you'd find it harder to go back to a push button sander than using you'd find to start using this. I don't touch the manual speed adjustment on mine, just vary hand pressure - it's the most natural thing in the world but there's a very slight learning curve to it, like a clutch on the car. I actually wish more tools could be made like this. A jigsaw for example, if you like reverse scribing with the tool underneath the stock and the blade pointing out the top as I do, then a barrel grip jigsaw with intuitive paddle trigger would be something I'd definitely like to try

how aboutt he maxxt sanders ?comes with both 5" and 6" as well

whats the difference between this and a delwhat hand orbital sander. does this remove material quicker
@10MinuteWorkshop3 жыл бұрын
Not sure which DeWalt sander you mean, but this is a brushless, low profile motor that is almost impossible to stall. Also,available,in a variety of strokes from 3 mm to 7mm I think, so yes, capable of removing material faster.👍

They look nice, but anecdotally they are not reliable. Bosch do a r/o sander that has low vibration, 4mm orbit and interchangeable pads - 150mm standard, 150 mm festool pattern and 125mm standard. Brilliant tool. I went for the Festool ets150ec. Very light, low profile, available with 3 or 5mm orbits and unbeatable reliability. If you want a vicious but controllable 125mm sander, you can't go far wrong with the rotex 125. And no, I am not sponsored by Festool( wish I was though!)
@10MinuteWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
Thanks David! Yes, I have the Rotex 125, but I find it overly aggressive for ‘normal’ sanding in Rotex mode, and not enough (3.6mm stroke) in normal mode. I will be taking a look at the Bosch though. 👍

The mention of longevity of brushes piqued my interest. I'm still regularly using my Elu 177E router on it's original brushes. And we all know how long ago that morphed into the DeWalt DW625. I do check them occasionally and there still plenty of meat left ion them. If it ain't broke. . . . . . . . .
@Sly_Wolf_13 жыл бұрын
Nice to here that, i too have elu mof 177, got mine in '96 or' 97 if memory serves me correctly. All i can say is it's bloody brilliant, they don't make tools like that anymore.

What about the metabo sxe turbo 150mm with 2.8mm or 6.2mm orbit? Not 5 inch 5mm but close. I have the Deros and this metabo. Which is best...bang for buck the metabo.
@10MinuteWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
Had the Metabo as well before I picked up my Festool. Great sander, ergonomics don’t compare though. 👍👍
@BischBaschBosch4 жыл бұрын
@@10MinuteWorkshop Have you tried the Metabo sxe 150 5.0 bl? Had a look at tool fairs. Other than colour, it's identical to the Mirka Deros. Don't know of anyone who's actually had or used one in anger to see if it suffers any of the same issues though.
@10MinuteWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
No, I havent - I’ve had it pointed out to me a couple of times but I’d forgotten about it tbh, or put it aside mentally as it was similar money to the Mirka. You’ve got me thinking now though Stew...! 😂😆👍👍

I had the Ceros, failed and failed again, just at wrong time in middle of job. I loved the size but too expensive to keep replacing. Light use now gone to festool which has had an absolute hammering even sanded my oak floor with it. Never mirka again. I do use the mirka disks though
@10MinuteWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, it seems odd - some can take a hammering, others fail so easily. My festool - as tall and tippy as it feels in comparison hasn’t missed a beat in ~13 years - same set of brushes. 🤷♂️👍
