It's actually wrong tho, mirrors do flip, like in the arrow example, if you actually point the arrow straight towards the mirror then refelection would point in the opposite direction i.e. towards you. Same with your own reflection, you look into the mirror, your reflection looks out of the mirror towards you
@dawntwilight Жыл бұрын
@@shivamarya5225 damn it I thought I understood
@shivamarya5225 Жыл бұрын
@@dawntwilight Its not that hard to understand, mirrors dont actually flip right to left, they flip forwards to backwards or the axis to perpendicular to a mirror. When looking in a mirror and pointing your hand towards right, your reflection would point in the same direction, the only difference is your reflection would face back towards you rather than looking forward like you are, thats why hands appear flipped in the mirrors, its because the forwards and backwards got flipped in the mirror. Similarly if the mirror was on the ground it would flip in the direction perpendicular to it i.e. flip up to down and vice versa. Thats also why flipping a paper works to make flipped letters, you are just flipping the front and back axis

@iii601 how about this: if you hold a book to your face so you can read it, then turn it around to face the mirror, you've reversed it. In the mirror, the pages are reversed, which is what you would expect, having just flipped the book. Therefore the mirror can't be flipping the image, because otherwise it'd be reversing the image twice, which would put it back where it started, and you'd read the text in the mirror normally. Or alternatively: hold a hand up to the mirror; your thumb is on the same side both in the reflection and outside the mirror. But if you want to see the reflection of the back of your hand, you need to rotate it, which lets you see the back of the hand in the reflection, but now your thumb is on the other side, both in and outside of the mirror. People seem to get mixed up specifically with books and the like because the back is normally not see-through, so they don't see the text being reversed outside of the mirror, only in the reflection, and don't think about the fact that they've rotated the pages around

I assumed that by "image" he meant 2d image. But yeah mirror images certainly are flipped in the Z axis. This is why we must flip the paper toward the mirror to see the text in the mirror image. And depending on how we flip the paper, we choose another axis in which the text will appear flipped in the mirror, which typically would be left-right flipped because that's how we'd flip something if we wanted to show it to another person

I’ve seen comments of people not understand this so here: Mirrors don’t flip anything you put in front of it, you flip it and the mirror shows you the thing flipped because you flipped it. To show the words on the mirror, you need to flip the paper so it’s facing the mirror. By flipping the paper, you flip the words on the paper. The mirror will reflect what it sees, which is the paper that you flipped.

I’m so sorry if this is a dumb question but I’m missing something and I really want to understand. What does he mean we flip it? Like in the case of writing something on a paper and then holding it up in the mirror where it looks backwards, how are we flipping it? Cause when someone writes something on a paper and then flips it around to show me, the letters aren’t backwards to me. They still seem like they’re going the right way. What am I missing here?? (To be transparent, I also don’t know the detailed science behind mirrors/reflections, I also have ABYSMAL spatial reasoning. I can barely translate clockwise and counterclockwise most of the time).

Because mirrors do actually flip front-to-back, which flips chirality (i.e., "handedness"). We see our left hand as a right hand in the mirror. 3D objects do get flipped front-to-back. Because that change in chirality is often associated with flipped text (e.g., seeing the "us" in the mirror is wearing a shirt with backwards text), we tend to just think of it as flipping left-to-right, rather than flipping chirality. The video here seems to not be flipping anything only because he's removed depth as a factor, so we can't see the depth get flipped.
@alakani2 жыл бұрын
@@Ass_of_Amalek When mirrors reflect light, the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection. Chirality is taught in organic chemistry and many undergrads still don't get it. 5 year olds, savant syndrome aside, don't have a sufficiently developed occipital lobe for much of any complex mental imaging. In your other comment you mention stepping in the mirror and turning 180 degrees - but then your left side would become your right side. Instead of turning around, you'd have to turn through yourself. Humans thinking they know what's going on when they usually don't is called the Dunning-Kruger effect, mitigating it is a constant process for everyone along with all the other cognitive biases, which is where the phrase 'check yourself before you wreck yourself' comes from :p

@stevenjones85752 жыл бұрын
@@Z44BO Because our brains interpret distance on the assumption that light travels in a purely straight line. Say the mirror is 3 feet North from you. When you look in the mirror, an object 2 feet North of you will appear in the mirror as 4 feet North, because the light bouncing off the object only has to travel 2 feet to go straight to your eyes, but the light bouncing to the mirror and then to your eyes has to travel 4 feet to go from the object to your eyes. An object 1 foot North of you appears only 1 foot away in real life, but its reflection appears 5 feet North. Your own reflection appears 6 ft North, while in reality you're 0 ft North of yourself. An object 1 ft behind appears 1 foot to the South, but its mirror image appears 7 ft North. And this continues: the further South an objects is, the further North it will appear in the mirror. The mirror has flipped South to North. This is because our brains assume light always travels straight when judging distance.

@@johnhurtme I know that a mirror flips the z-axis, but if one flips a piece of text in order to show it to the mirror, then it is actually flipped, because _one flipped it themselves_ not because the mirror did the flipping. That’s the whole point of the exercise of flipping something vertically to show it to the mirror. It demonstrates that the image in the mirror is not flipped because of how the mirror works, but because of our behavior in getting the thing pointed at the mirror instead of towards ourselves. And that depending on whether one flips it on the x-axis or y-axis, _that_ is what determines how it looks flipped in the mirror, again, because we’re the ones flipping it, not the mirror.

EXPLAINATION: it's because which face is facing. in 3D modeling, it's called 'normal' where the right-side facing up is considered the outer-side, and the negative face in the inner side. While silhouette stays the same. Example, if you wrote 'hello' on the arrow, and the written side is facing you, the mirror will reflect the blank backside, despite being the same cutout shape. Flip the cutout vertically until the face 'hello' is in the mirror, and you'll be left with the blank side facing you. The shape direction still remains, albeit the 'hello' is upside down, flipped. His method is intentionally confusing the viewers because he's using clear plastic sheet in his example. The front side is seen through the back side. And the backside will always be flipped even before you put it in the mirror. If the backside with flipped words face is facing the mirror, it's a double negative: if -x = flipped words, -1 = mirror flipping the reflection (-x) * (-1) = Positive x, or the right orientation.

I follow and agree with some of what you're saying, especially "his method is intentionally confusing the viewers because he's using clear plastic sheet in his example. The front side is seen through the back side. And the backside will always be flipped even before you put it in the mirror." I can think of a much simpler example of image flip using written letters. Write RAN on a piece of card and hold it against the mirror edge on so you see the word and its reflection simultaneously. You'll see RAN ИAЯ. Clearly it's not you who's doing the flip.

you're not dumb, this video is. mirrors do make the world that is viewed through them appear horizontally flipped and that is what everyone means when they talk about a mirror flipping the image. If you hold up your right arm, the person in the mirror is holding up their left arm, or would be if it was a physical person in front of you. The gimmick with showing writing not flipped when it's facing you is only mind blowing because you're not used to being able to read the text the right way from both the paper and the mirror at once, but if you think about what the mirror is "seeing", it's seeing mirrored text through the paper, just like when you write on a page and flip it to see the writing flipped ocming through the paper.

The easiest way to explain it is like this: think of the mirror as another eye, when you show it an arrow pointing to your left the mirror sees it to his right, the mirror then shows his view point fliped. So mirrors actually do flip the image
@js-wy8fg Жыл бұрын
That's a great and simple explanation . Also, it solves "mystery" why mirror flips only left and right, but not up and down.
