Around here, you can buy Mexican frankincense, which is essentially, a kind of copal. A lot of people I know substitute local resins from pine, fir, etc in their Kyphi. I've never made Kyphi, but I hope to soon.

@SolarPagan I bought the lotus oil used in this from Soma Luna. It is fairly good quality.

frankincense is only near threatened, Omani frankincense is usually very traditional and responsibly harvested ^-^

Hello I have been making Church incense for a few years, I belong to the Coptic Church and so I've decided to try my hand at kyphi. This may not be in the same Spirit as traditional kyphi, however I prefer to forage all my ingredients. I was curious if you know of any resources that can list substitutes much like you mentioned? Btw I personally love "burgundy" spruce almost more than Frankincense!

The one I used for this batch was simply "Lotus Oil."

Exciting process, thanks for sharing! I'm really intrigued in this process and will be making it in the future. How long does the incense keep after it's cured? I hope you had a blessed Samhain.
