I drove those trucks in Japan while stationed there in the US Marine Corps. They are awesome!! We used to call them “mighty mites” after the M422.

Love it! Though for the rear dump bed I would make the tilt bed a flat tilt bed with retractable ramps, so one could potentially fit a larger vehicle on it (like a small side by side). Just in case you need to recover such in the future and the vehicle is a little wider than the bed. Also be sure to add strap down points, so you could use it as a mini bike carrier as well . Cus who doesn’t love mini bikes on a mini truck eh?

I daily a 1992 Hijet everyday, and it’s the most fun I’ve had in any vehicle! She will hit interstate at 65mph no problem, albeit 0-65 takes somewhat of an eternity. I take driving it on road much like a motorcycle where you are more connected to the road around you. They are starting to become more and more prevalent, and I could not be happier about it! I have the 95 version of the HiJet (minus the dump bed). They are a lot of fun. I use it to plow snow and haul firewood.... it is a little workhorse! I enjoyed watching this episdode!

MotoCheez did a build a few years ago ( the Playlist has 157 vids ! ) . He scoured Forums , but still got some sketchy [ hey , it *_IS_* the internet ! ] advice re: body lifts , suspension lifts , max tire sizes , etc. Ended up with a sweet 4x4 Kei Truck 👍 . I don't recall if he named the forums , but you can glean a lot of info of what MOD SIZES actually work. His buddy did a similar one & painted it TONKA yellow 😄 .

I had a '97 I imported that was a dump with a locker. Put a lift and 23s on it (really, 23s are pretty big for these things xD). It was a ton of fun, but pretty rough off road and not particularly capable. Fun though.

Portal axles, 4-link, a little triming and 25"-30" tires. Definitely bumpers. Diahatsu is made by Toyota. A solid axle from a Samurai should fit but a 1st gen Toyota truck axle should too.

If i can suggest ....... make a winchable tray that qould slide out when u raise the back drive tge mini jeep on den wich it back in...mount a winch to the front of the pan the tray would be in a built track with angle iron on conveyor wheels

That thing looks almost brand new, be carful, most of your parts will still come from Japan. if it's a 94 you can register it as vintage cause its 30 years old. also I heard in Utah you can register it as a ATV.
