I don't see any wrong with old setup with union. The reason with union is for future in case of leak or corrosion. You can change it without power tool. Your setup with compression fitting mean to cut the pipe and start over again with power tool. I bet the cost of the pipes cheaper than your way

More threaded fittings means more potential for leaks. The threads are the weakest part of the pipe. But yes, it did work. It was also an eye sore the way it entered the wall and it’s in an area where it’ll be seen regularly. My customer isn’t concerned with what’s cheaper, he values the aesthetic and quality. MegaPress fittings are also safer in earthquake areas. Customer asked me to redo it without me seeing it.
