Loki, Loki, Loki. When will you learn that your actions have consequences?
Alternate title: HAIRCUT PRANK GONE WRONG (I ALMOST DIED! NOT CLICKBAIT)
(FUN FACT! While that math that briefly shows on the screen calculates the correct solution for the parameters stated, there's actually an error in the formula! Find it for extra credit!)

Loki in modern media: "Muahahaha! Now that I've imprisoned all my enemies, I'm free to do as I please! The world will bow to me!" Loki in the majority of Norse tales: "Whose day am I going to ruin today?" ... "Ah, so the answer was 'My own.' Weird how often that happens."

Disclaimer: Although the video shows Sif with short hair after Loki’s prank, it actually resulted in her being entirely bald because Loki removed it from the roots. Worse yet, it couldn’t grow back for that same reason.

In the version of the Myth that I'm familiar with, Mjolnir was ruled the greatest artefact purely on the basis of it's short handle (the sum total effect of Loki's meddling) making it easily concealable. So had Loki just let the Dwarves work, it would have been a tie. Instead, he cheated himself into a loss. Looney Tunes indeed,

That's how a surprising amount of Norse Mythology boils down. Loki is both the one to blame and the one to thank in most situations. Loki can best be categorized as "too smart for his own good". When things go wrong, he is almost always the one to blame, but when the rest of the Aesir have a problem they can't solve, Loki is the one they turn to.

I just love that Thor's dialog consists of enraged SCREAMING in that first encounter. I like to imagine that Sif caught Loki mid-haircut, got a message to Thor, and then the two of them wait. The work was completed late and the giant had to forfeit his price. Loki however did not count on the stallion catching up to him. Sleipnir, Odin's eight legged horse was the result. Imagine Loki cringing from the memory of his violation. Loki also had at least 4 other children, a son named "Nari or Narfi" by his wife Sigyn, and three with the female jötunn Angrboða. They were the wolf Fenrir, the world serpent Jörmungandrt, and Hel queen the dishonorable dead.

it's a little more obnoxious than that. If it was all just obvious out of context Yahweh praising it would be easy enough to separate it from the legit Norse myth. The problem is that some sources have things even like the deity status of the Norse gods even being called into question and them instead being considered supposedly 'mortal heroes'. There's the possibility that some of the myths we've lost in their entirety and only know about because of weird snippets mentioned here and there in the text are gone because some overly pious jackass in the 11th century or something decided it was heretical and burned it.

@@trevorweisberg8470 well, you're not incorrect, but you're not technically correct either. First of all, literal translation of "dwarf" to Norse is "dvergr". Which is not at alll the word that's used to describe "dwarves" in Edda. Instead, we have dökkálfar ("dark elves") and svartálfar ("swarthy elves"). In this particular story, Brokkr and Sindri are svartálfar. Drow are likely "inspred" by dökkálfar, but we don't actually have much concrete information about dökkálfar except that those are black-skinned elves that live underground. Svartálfar probably "inspired" D&D's svirfneblin, i.e. deep gnomes. That said, svartálfar might just be a synonym for dökkálfar, so we're free to think that dwarves in Norse mythology are basically hot dark-skinned elves. And bear in mind that "elves" basically is closer to "spirits" or "fairies" in this context, so yeah, not really close to Tolkien's "elves are people, but better" concept either.

The best Gaiman story on Norse mythology comes from Sandman: Loki: Many years ago, I convinced Thor of the Aesir that the reason for his impotence was that he was pregnant (he's not very bright). And I told him to lie face down and naked on his sleeping furs until I came and delivered him of child. I was disguised as a wandering physician. So I fed him a gallon of castor oil, painted his arse blue and shoved a cork in his bum-hole. I told him it was the cure for his condition. Then I went off to sleep with his wife. Loki: So Thor is lying face down with a cork up his fundament for a week and a day, while his insides continue to rumble their course. And now he's got a pain in his gut like you wouldn't believe, as the pressure continues to build. I'd told him he might experience some pain. That it was common in pregnancy. Loki: Suddenly, into the room, through an open window, bounds Ratatosk, the squirrel who lives in the branches of the world tree. Ratatosk is curious as any little squirrel. And he climbs on top of Thor's squirming, straining buttocks, and he-pulls out the cork. THRRRRRPPPPP! It's an explosion-eight days' worth of oiled shit thunders forth from the fundament of the Lord of Storms. Loki: And the mighty Thor sits up, and looks around, and sees Ratatosk on the ground, stunned, gassed, and befouled. And slowly, with hands as big as ham hocks, he picks up the little animal, and stares at it. And then, with one ponderous motion, he clasps it to his bosom. Loki: “You're ugly", he says, "you're hairy, and you're covered in shit. But you're mine, and I love you!"

Comic Loki is actually much closer to his "real" depictions. Sure, he's literally the reason the Avengers were formed... But Loki's changed in every single way over the years. And, Marvel Comic spoilers (this won't ever be in the MCU) Loki's literally the Norse God who survived "Ragnarök" (Avengers/New Avengers/Last Days of Loki,) and he is actually a problem solver now, albeit he's never trusted. More spoilers below, this is recent. Except to Thor, who has taken Odin's throne. Loki straight up asked him "Would you trust me even as your enemy," and Thor says yes. And then Loki transforms into... some other Loki...

Loki is your rogue friend that invited them selves to your DnD campaigns and then manages to get you all caught up paying back a whole town with all the gold you just looted from the dungeon, which everybody almost died in because the rogue rolled a nat 1-3 for stealth and managed to trigger most or all of the traps and piss off every single monster in the dungeon.

Maybe you learned it from the Marvel comics? They put their own twist on this legend where Loki refuses to pay for the new hair for Sif so the dwarves make the new hair but make it out of "nothing" since they were paid nothing. So they basically make her hair out of the blackness of space and that's supposed to be the explanation for why comic book Sif has black hair when every other native Asgardian appears to be blonde or red haired.

This is me but a ton of myths because I’ve read most of Rick Riordan’s gods of whatever books and almost every encounter there is basically just a slightly modernised spin on some Greek, Roman, Egyptian or Norse myth depending on what series you’re on. Made me think that we should do more of that, but tbh I’ve seen some German productions where people _tried_ doing that with German myths and it was awful to watch.
